THE NATURES PATHWAYS MISSION
To provide relevant information on personal wellness by connecting
healthy living experts with the communities they serve.
AM
Locally grown: Its not just a great way to enjoy your food, its also a fantastic way to
help your local economy thrive! When you support businesses owned and operated
in your community, you and other area consumers reap the benefits. (We must admit,
though, that were a bit biased: Natures Pathways is a local small business, after all!)
Here are just a few of the great advantages gained from nurturing locally
owned businesses:
A BOOST TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY. Small, local businesses play an
important role in job creation. The staffs of these businesses then have the opportunity to buy from other area companies, maybe even the place where you work.
In fact, when you spend $100 at a locally owned business, 68 of those dollars
stay local, compared to the $43 that stay local when $100 is spent at nonlocally
owned businesses. Those dollars support local police and fire departments, area
manufacturers and service providers, and more!
INSIDE KNOWLEDGE ON WHERE AND HOW YOUR GOODS AND
SERVICES ARE MADE. Locally owned businesses are able to create close rela-
tionships with their customers and provide detailed information about their
products and materials.
DEDICATED NONPROFIT SUPPORT. If youre not fiscally able to donate as
much as you would like, shopping at local businesses can help you support nonprofits in your community. Small businesses actually provide 250 percent more support
than large businesses to nonprofit organizations, according to Sustainable Connections (sustainableconnections.org), a nonprofit proponent of local businesses and
their contribution to a healthy environment and the well-being of all citizens.
A SENSE OF HOMETOWN PRIDE. Local business owners and their staffs
arent just people who provide you your goods and services theyre your
neighbors. And when you support them, you support your community. As a
local business consumer, you know that youre part of something bigger than
yourself something that can be as great as you and others wish it to be.
Youll find many local health and wellness businesses in the pages of this publication. Our authors and advertisers are experts in their fields and committed to doing
whats best for their customers and community: you, your family and your friends.
We encourage you to peruse the pages of Natures Pathways. Were certain
youll find exactly what you need and youll get to foster a healthy local economy
at the same time.

There also are many choices for the mind, including multiple
courses for continuing education, programs that guide self-study,
and countless programs that can be accessed in multiple new electronic formats.
The options for spiritual development also are available in many
forms, including traditional and nontraditional.
All of our efforts in these areas, however, depend on a reasonably clear emotional sense of self.
So, if you are beginning your journey and you know that you need

as multiple forms of healing for body, mind, and spirit are now

deep, dense root growth, lower maintenance, higher drought tolerance and an unfriendly abode for weeds and pests.
Mow dry
If at all possible, dance in the rain but dont mow. Damp or wet grass
is slippery; hinders a clean, sharp, and even cut; and is conducive to
clumping clippings. Soft, wet ground is also easily compacted under
foot or mower tires, which leaves uneven depressions or ruts in the
soil, resulting in more frequent need of soil aeration.
Additionally, the chlorophyll from newly cut grass tends to
bleed and stain green anything it contacts. You dont want to be
literally green, and neither does your driveway.
Brown, torn or ripped tips of turf are usually the result of dull
mower blades, leaving unsightly, injured turf with increased
susceptibility to disease, fungus and pests. Excess energy is needed
for repair, leaving lawns in decline.
Grasses benefit from a clean, sharp slice. Sharpen mower blades
at least once a year and preferably three times: spring, summer
and fall. Some people prefer to purchase an extra set of mower
blades to switch out and sharpen alternately, or have three sharpened sets on hand and ready to go. Resharpen over winter months
and youre set again for spring!
Following simple techniques can help you, your lawn and the
environment to smile while you mow smarter not harder.
Healthy lawns use less energy, water, nutrition and chemical intervention, while producing cleaner air and water quality. Favorable
conditions for turf growth lead to unfavorable conditions for
weeds, insects and disease!

Outrageous obliques

6. Inhale, tip to the left as far as you can control, without folding
7. Exhale, feel your waist (obliques) carry you back up with control.
You should not feel any downward pressure into your pelvic
floor when you lift (remember to keep those muscles strong).
8. Repeat this process 10 times on each side. After you have
repeated this on both sides, go back to your weaker side and
complete the process again for a 2-to-1 ratio (weaker to stronger). If the weight creates too much tension work, do this exercise without added weight in front and instead hold opposite
elbows with your forearms at chest height.
Have fun and keep at it!

Feeling
stuck?
By Kathy Clegg, MA, CDC, IASHA
Im stuck in traffic.
Im stuck at work/home.
Im stuck in a rut.
Im stuck in bed with (ailment).
Stuck is a paradigm that shows up for us when were out of alignment and unable to get in the flow. Its like coming up against a
wall or a road sign, presenting us with the opportunity to make
another choice. When were up against that wall, our conditioned
response is to push harder. I just need to work harder/longer; I
need to be aggressive and move through this traffic jam; I need
to figure out my lack of money, time and relationships. If this
sounds like you, consider it a message from the universe telling
you to shift and go in another direction.
Shifting our thinking from the way weve been doing things
most of our lives is not easy. We often dont even recognize it.

The call to
self-evolve
By Helen Borth
ave you heard the call or felt the pull to one of the most
exciting movements happening throughout the world?
The call has to do with personal change and spiritual upliftment. This unique approach helps us to discover new
concepts, ones that are so uplifting that they will remodel our
thinking and reform our lives.
Now in 2014, humanity has experienced a great deal of helpful
new approaches in the area of dieting, meditation and natural
healing products, etc. These bits of information are welcomed and
have changed many of our attitudes and opinions. This brings us
to the call to self-evolve, which is to welcome a greater understanding of the basics and power of thought. Those of us who have
spent time in the world of self-evolving will be the first to say this
trip is an inside job because we have placed into practice helpful
meta concepts. Meta is a word referring to going beyond or transcending what is presently understood. Meta thoughts have the
power to change past thinking patterns because they help us feel a
greater freedom on all levels: physical, mental and spiritual.
Here is how it works: A meta phrase challenges the ego minds
learned patterns. The truth is, everyone has collected thoughts and
beliefs concerning health, wellness and certain rules to live life by.
No matter what, it always seems to come back to thinking. Here is
an example of a meta concept put forth by a number of authors,
sages and Internet YouTube videos: What you think about comes
about. Our personal challenge lies in waking up to our own thinking by mentally using this meta phrase as a powerful tool or pointer.
For example, if we are experiencing a particular physical problem,
it would be very helpful to not continually talk about it. Why? First,
we need to be aware that every thought produces a vibration which
then travels directly into our aura and then out into the collective
mind. Secondly, not only does the vibration produce an effect on
our body, it has the ability to draw the same energy to us from the
collective mind. Now the problem has been amplified, maybe many
www.naturespathways.com
times over. Eckhart Tolle shares an idea about this process in one
of his stories. He says physical-problem thought frequencies are
like bubbles floating around in empty space. When the energy of
a physical problem is housed in our mind, it will resonate with the
energy inside one of these bubbles. We easily pick it up. It amplifies
the original irritation. This naturally happens because of another
rule of thought: Like attracts like. These two rules and many other
helpful meta pointers are an important part of self-evolving. If this
bit of material is of interest to you, follow up on the Internet by
looking for videos on YouTube that will help in grasping the idea
and putting it into practice.
There are many more meta concepts for those actively searching to self-evolve. It is known that making changes in our
present way of thinking is one of the most positive actions we
can take for ourselves. By using the suggested phrases or one of
the many others, we personally take charge of change. After all,
change is all there is. We may not feel comfortable with change
because our ego wants things to stay the same, but change is
not something we need to fear. It would be wise if we could
welcome it. After all, nothing in the world would ever grow or
blossom (plants, trees, animals, etc.) and not one of us would
ever move to become greater without change. To be on the
journey to self-evolve means change is the bottom line. In time,
it is so welcomed because the whole body feels more at ease,
experiences greater freedom and without a doubt experiences a
deserving and natural uplifted spirit.
Helen Borth was the first reiki master in Wisconsin in 1980. The
director and cofounder of the Institute of Self Awareness (nonprofit
in 1991) and a class instructor, she received a bachelors degree from
UW-Milwaukee in 1958. She has years of research and application
in the field of transformation and spiritual empowerment. Please

Of course, this is how we all got our start in life and this holds true
anywhere in the world.
Within the Judeo-Christian Bible, there are several passages
that link supernatural power to words. For example, the Christian
New Testament says that the Word is God and that the Word
was made flesh.
Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D., a stem cell biologist, taught at the University of Wisconsins School of Medicine. He performed pioneering studies at Stanford University, and authored and co-authored
numerous books. In one of his books, The Biology of Belief, Dr.
Lipton and fellow researchers cite what they feel are relevant points
in which quantum physics and spirituality cross paths:
1. Atoms appear out of thin air.
2. The universe is not material, but rather mental and spiritual.
3. Thoughts (silent words) can activate or inhibit the cells function-producing proteins.
4. Harnessing the power of your mind (words) can be more
effective than drugs.
5. Each of your 50 trillion-plus cells must acquiesce control to
the brain.
6. Biological behavior can be controlled by invisible forces,
including thoughts or words.
In other words, the biblical concepts and scientific theory mirror
the second important point: The word is living in and around
us, whether found within the concepts of spirituality or science.
When you dont cover up the world with words and labels, a sense
of the miraculous returns to your life that was lost a long time
ago when humanity, instead of using thought, became possessed
by thought.
Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Lifes Purpose
And finally the third important point: There is action that manifests from our words.
Returning to theories of quantum physics, our thoughts create
a physical reality bound up in space and time. Our thoughts are

history. Perhaps you are part of this group or are one of the 76
million American baby boomers (born between 1945 and 1964)
with Millennial children.
According to online Investopedia, many Millennials have an
increasingly global mindset, with factors such as social responsibility and the environment frequently playing a key role in where
Millennials place their money.
Numerous studies have been conducted in an attempt to determine characteristics specific to those of this age group, who have
been molded by such events as 9/11 and the Great Recession of 2008,
which left over 15 percent of these 20-somethings out of work. Banks
and other financial institutions are beginning to cater to Gen Yers,
whose spending, saving and investing habits are even now beginning
to define how the world will do business in the future.
The most educated generation in history, these 20-somethings
are known to be confident, opinionated, fashionable, brash and
open to change most certainly dont suffer from low selfesteem. If not satisfied with the way they are being treated, theyll
shift to a new workplace, a new service provider, a new brand.
This is an age group that seeks, and even demands, instant gratification. The Internet, which they grew up with, is the primary
source of information for Millennials.
A recent survey conducted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants showed that although pay and compensation are still very important for most Millennials, other issues
include autonomy, respect and being treated fairly. A large part of
the Millennial generation prizes work-life balance, giving back and
having new experiences as highly as they do pure achievement.
As part of its program aimed at educating and assisting Millennials in their financial futures, Milwaukee-based Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company conducted a study in 2013
that showed Millennials are much more likely than previous

and life in general you might begin to wonder if chlorophyll runs
through her veins.
You see, Patti and the rest of the Beres clan are on a mission to not
only beautify Delafield-area yards, but spread awareness of organic,
earth-friendly treatments and techniques. Rather than using dangerous chemicals, Be Green transforms lawns with something much more
powerful: knowledge.
husband has immersed himself in the green industry for 27 years she
never really intended to get into the business herself. Her motivation to
eventually do so, however, could come from no better source: her family.
It was a February day four years ago when Beres and her children took
a late winter walk and encountered a rather strange sight: a lawn care
company applying fertilizer to a lawn at a time of year when grass isnt
able to absorb anything except perhaps more snow. Fertilizing so early
wasnt good for the lawn, the customer or the earth, Beres explains.
When I saw that, I said to my kids, I just cant believe theyre
out doing that this early. If we had a lawn care company, we would
do such a better job. My oldest son, who was about 14 at the time,
looked at me and said, Well, Mom, why dont we?
At that moment, Beres knew what she had to do. A rescuer of
bumble bees and family preacher of the benefits of composting, it
was time to expand her smaller-scale environmental efforts outside
her home and daily life.
If I didnt do something, I wasnt teaching my kids a very good
lesson, she says.
Beres and her children went straight home and sent an email to
just about everyone in Beres contacts, explaining their natural lawn
care initiative. The gambit paid off.
We immediately got 40 responses, Beres remembers. We started
our first year with about 40 clients and never really imagined it would
grow to the extent it has. Now were reaching upwards of 400 clients in
our fourth year of business and its just been an amazing experience.
Be Green owes its tenfold growth in part to word-of-mouth recommendation. The reason customers are so pleased might be because
Be Green takes the time to understand each lawns needs and each
clients wishes.
Some landscapers approach service by dousing turf with nitrogenbased fertilizer, which provides instant gratification but not long-lasting health, or to use harsh chemical compounds to kill weeds.
Its kind of like a person eating raw sugar to get energy. You get
a big energy boost and you feel good for a little while, but all of a
sudden, you run out of energy, Beres explains. That sugar boost
depleted other areas of your body.
Nitrogen-based fertilizer works on grass in much the same way,
Beres says. The grass will green up immediately, but this healthy
appearance wont last.
Within a day or two, you have this beautiful color in your lawn
and the weeds are disappearing, and you think everything is great
Then the sugar high or the nitrogen levels run out. Within two
to three weeks, the grass is actually looking worse than it did before
because the nutrients have been depleted.
Lack of nutrients allows for weeds, diseases and pests to infiltrate
a lawn, Beres explains. Worse yet, nitrogen-based fertilizer that fails
to absorb can make its way into storm sewers and eventually local
waterways.
Be Greens approach is different. The company uses absorbable
nutrients designed to foster long-term health.
We give a nutrition boost to your lawn. Instead of eating raw
sugar, its like eating healthy, organic salad, Beres says. This helps
a lawns root system its immune system, really grow stronger.
Grass with a healthy root system is better able to resist drought and
is thicker, leaving little room for weeds and pests to gain a foothold.
Be Green uses a simple recipe Beres calls the three Rs: the right
product, at the right time, at the right rate. The exact composition
of the recipe, however, varies from lawn to lawn and seasonally. It all
depends on the grass and plants specific needs.
We get to know your lawn, Beres says. When you have a
professional walking on your lawn every five to eight weeks and giving
you an assessment on what your lawn needs right at that moment,
its not just a blanket profile. It is a program that is created for each
customer individually. We have clients that dont want a chemical on
their lawn ever. We can provide that.
But Beres explains that not all customers mind using chemicals, and
Be Green doesnt mind using them if those chemicals are safe for the
environment. The company uses minimally toxic compounds that dont
affect honey bees, butterflies or earthworms. These products work just as
well as the hazardous chemicals sprayed by other landscapers, Beres says.
Be Green also serves customers whose main wish is to banish all
weeds from their yards, no matter the nature of the chemicals a lawn
care company might use to do so.

Spiritual energy
Modalities such as reiki and prayer are used every day by pet lovers
and enthusiasts who care deeply for their own and others pets.
People with strong, spiritual feelings can transfer their energy to a pet
in need. Have you ever felt the energy of someone standing close to
you, even though they were not physically touching you? Many of us
tend to ignore these sensations. When we attempt to get in touch
with our energetic feelings, we open a whole new door to possible
diagnostic and healing modalities for our dogs and cats.
An appointment with a reputable animal communicator, who
has harnessed his or her ability to converse telepathically with
your pet, is an entertaining and emotionally stimulating way for
you to get your feet wet in this energetic realm of natural pet care.
You will be very surprised as to what you can learn about yourself
and your pet!

Perfection is not the goal. A well-thought-out plan still meets obstacles as we pursue it. The intention of self-reflection is to recognize
the inner conflict that arises, often from competing priorities and
responsibilities. This is where real change begins.
Know that there is often an elegant and mature decision waiting
to be discovered. Make the choice that supports your long-term
goals. Sometimes, the answer to the conflict or distraction is
saying no or not now. Sometimes, saying no is uncomfortable.

digestion. Healthy release of liquids five to six times per day and
solids two to three times per day is ideal.
What I love even more is that that my 92-year-old grandma can
also enjoy the benefits of the rebounder while sitting in her chair
and at one time even used the bar to balance. She has lymphedema,
and the jumping is a source to support moving the water in her legs
up and out of her body. Its called buddy bouncing and its simply
one of the ways multiple people can benefit from this exercise.
Our household has experienced many rebounders, from the
$50 one from the sporting goods store, to gym grade, to bungie
cord bouncers that are hundreds of dollars. I love the gym grade
and bungie cord bouncers, and my goal with every purchase is to
invest in those made in the USA. Having strong springs, a durable
Permatron mat and spring-loaded legs for easy folding improve
the ability to maximize our time using the unit.
What I love about incorporating jumping into my day is it is
simple to get up and bounce all day, every day, while I am on the
phone or simply reading a book. Even the dogs love to rest upon it
as I bounce. It makes sense that many trampoline parks continue
to show up; kids get it! The ability to jump, play and learn all day
inside the classroom or in your home is a true gift.
Enjoy learning more from other leaders in rebounding:

All the best in bouncing success. Thank you for reading!
The joy our family has discovered in jumping has transformed
into an active learning elementary school program for kids called
Drum-A-Dance. See video at www.drumadance.com. It transforms the classroom from a sit-and-learn environment to a move
and learn success. There is brilliance when we bounce, and kids
brains light up like sparklers.

Reaching
Treetops Yoga
brings sunshine
and strength
into
Janes life
Alyssa told me about her yoga studio and I kept telling her,
Oh, I already go to yoga classes at the gym I go to. I really didnt
understand how different life would be if I just checked out her
studio. I experienced a blessing in disguise when my gym cut the
yoga class I was attending and I decided to try out Reaching Treetops aerial yoga class.
It wasnt a walk in the park at first. In fact, I was horrible at my
first class. At first, I was terrified of falling on my head or letting go
of the silks, and I didnt trust that the fabric would hold me. Plus,
it was hard work! But oh man was it fun!
The first thing I noticed at Reaching Treetops was how comfortable they make you feel. They were so nice! I was nervous to try
something new, but when I was there, nothing else in the world
mattered. Taking five minutes at the end of class for savasana
a pose where you do nothing but lay still, focusing on relaxing
everything in your body, freeing your mind of anything negative
and breathing in everything positive did wonders for my spiritual and mental health.
I started going to Reaching Treetops Yoga every week. It took
about three classes before the hurt of using muscles that hadnt
been exercised before became unnoticeable. My body didnt ache
like it would from a regular gym; instead, I felt stretched in every
muscle, stronger in every muscle and more flexible. My back hurt
www.naturespathways.com
less, my posture got better I learned how to walk tall and proud.
To put it simply, I felt great!
I was addicted. Within my first month I could feel muscle tone
in my arms and my abs. I had little muscles popping out everywhere and would get really excited every time I noticed them. I
had been lifting weights in a repetitive routine process at the $10
gym five days a week and not getting results nearly as fast as by
doing aerial yoga.
One year later, I feel I am inspiring other new people in the room.
I am doing the things that I was jealous I couldnt do when I began.
I would watch other students in class and think, I wish I could
do that! I want to be just like them! and now I think I am there. I
can do mostly what everyone else can do, but I am forever learning
more, which is what makes it fun. There is always room to grow!
I started expanding outside of aerial and attending as many
classes as I could in a week. I tried pose breakdown, hatha yoga,
vinyasa yoga, mommy and baby yoga, kids aerial yoga, kids yoga,
yoga in the park, core fusion and roll with flow. I felt my instructors becoming my friends, I could feel their light and love when
I accomplished something. They were as happy for me as if they
had done it themselves. Fitness was no longer tasking, it was easy
and it was something I wanted to do every single day.
I wasnt just learning yoga at Reaching Treetops, though; I was
also learning things about myself. I was doing things I didnt know
I could do. Instructors were taking their time to teach me how to be
the person I wanted to become. They pushed my limits just enough
to help me succeed in what I wanted to do. That feeling you get when
you accomplish something that seems impossible is invigorating.
I am proud of myself for going out and doing something I never
thought I would do and getting really good at it all while taking
care of four kids, one with special needs.
I knew I wasnt the only one who would benefit from the lessons
Reaching Treetops taught me. I took my kids to yoga and I taught
them yoga at home. My house became a place of peace, energy
and excitement. We bike, we do yoga, we run for charity and we
spend more time together.
I think the most important thing about yoga is finding a place
where you feel comfortable and at home. It only works if you love
where you are. My $10 gym did not do for me what Reaching
Treetops has done for me and my family.
Currently I am hoping to become a yoga instructor myself. I
want to inspire others the way Reaching Treetops has inspired me.
I want everyone to feel the joy I feel in my mind, body and soul.
Let the light in me honor and inspire the light in you. Namaste!

Release treatment involves applying sustained gentle pressure and movement into the fascia in order
to eliminate restrictions that may create pain or
