magazine
We feel like weve been talking about the weather a lot here at Natures Pathways. It
is a big deal to survive winter and make it to spring, not only because it feels nice
physically but there are also a variety of emotional benefits to milder temperatures.
However, April holds much more than peeks of sunshine and the promise of
summer:

NATIONAL GARDEN MONTH This one isnt so surprising. The old adage,

NATIONAL PET DAY: APRIL 11 Its no secret this magazine loves pets! Whether

youre a cat or dog person, fish or reptile fan, or parakeet enthusiast, the benefits of
having an animal in your life are immense and range from lowering your chance of
depression and heart attack to simply increasing your ability to calm down and relax.
INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY: APRIL 29 Recognized since 1982, this day,

also known as World Dance Day, promotes the importance of dance. Although it
originally began to persuade the idea that dance is a significant form of education,
we think its also a fun way to express yourself, exercise and let loose.
Whether you choose to continue to celebrate one of the above, enjoy it for the
first time, or have your own April traditions to keep alive, we hope you are able
to delight in each new experience.

Why do I still
have thyroid
symptoms
when my
lab work is
normal?
......................................................................
By Randi Mann, NP

re you suffering from symptoms of low thyroid (hypothyroidism) but your medical provider has told you that your
TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test was normal and
thus your thyroid is working fine?
We help hundreds of women each month with multiple
hormone problems, including those seeking a diagnosis and treatment for symptoms of low thyroid. One of the most frustrating
things that happens for many of my patients is that they truly do
have hypothyroidism but their TSH result is somewhere in the
broad range of normal, so they are told that their thyroid is not
the cause of their problems.
Many of my patients report hypothyroid symptoms such as:
I feel cold all the time especially my hands and feet and
sometimes I wear socks or extra clothing to bed. (This is not
normal!)
I am gaining weight for no reason or cannot lose a pound no
matter how hard I try. (It is very difficult to lose weight if the
cells in your body do not have proper thyroid signals.)
I am always tired, sluggish or lethargic.
I am sleeping more than usual.
I am constipated and may not have a bowel movement for
several days. (For best health you should have at least one
bowel movement daily before 10 a.m. and perhaps a second one
later in the day.)
10

Natures Pathways | April 2015

Every single cell in your body

has a receptor for thyroid
hormone, so if your cells are
not getting enough thyroid
hormone stimulation you
will certainly not feel well.
My skin is dry, thick and sometimes scaly.
My hair is thinning or falling out and is more dry, coarse and
brittle than normal.
I have frequent muscle cramps in my legs and/or toes, and my
muscles feel weaker than usual.
My memory is poor and I have a hard time with math.
My eyes, hands and feet are puffy.
My low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is elevated for
the first time in my life.
My periods are heavier and my cycles are getting more irregular or are more than 28 days apart.
www.naturespathways.com

The thyroid controls many functions in the body and there are a
multitude of symptoms that can signal a thyroid problem. Every
single cell in your body has a receptor for thyroid hormone, so if
your cells are not getting enough thyroid hormone stimulation
you will certainly not feel well.
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the base of
the neck that controls metabolism and many of the bodys systems
from brain to bowel to libido and fertility. The American Thyroid
Association reports that 1 in 8 women will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime. Low thyroid is an inherited condition that
can also cause fertility problems, miscarriages, premature births and
severe developmental problems in children. Undiagnosed low thyroid
can also lead to heart disease, insulin resistance, arthritis, osteoporosis, depression, dementia and twice the chance of Alzheimers disease.
We help our patients determine if they have a thyroid problem by
interpreting their symptoms, physical exam findings and lab results
including TSH, free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4),
reverse triiodothyronine (RT3), thyroid peroxidase (TPO), thyroglobulin (TG) antibodies, vitamin D and ferritin levels. We utilize a
wonderfully helpful thyroid/adrenal/sleep screening questionnaire
and machine called the Thyroflex that gives us very objective data
of thyroid function at the cellular level. A Thyroflex test is a fiveminute, Food and Drug Administration-approved test that measures
the speed in milliseconds of a reflex in the arm. During an
in-office evaluation, a small hammer connected to a computer is
used to strike the brachioradialis tendon located near the elbow.
The computer measures the rate and caliber of the reflex response to

determine thyroid function. The longer it takes for a reflex response,

the more thyroid hormone a person generally needs.
I often order female/ovarian and adrenal hormone testing for
my patients and may follow up with thyroid testing depending
on symptoms. Ovarian and adrenal hormone testing is done at
home, is quite easy to do and can tell us which of your levels are
low or out of balance. We can then decide the best course of treatment for the patients unique symptoms and health situation.
I find most of my patients prefer customized dosed, bioidentical hormones as they tend to offer timely symptom relief and
minimal side effects along with decreasing risks for bone loss.
It is very important to seek care from a medical professional who is skilled and
experienced at hormone management to help you. At our center we have helped
thousands of women feel like themselves again through proper diagnosis and
hormone management and lifestyle guidance. Please join us at our monthly End
Hormone Havoc seminar to learn more about the symptoms of hormonal imbalance and treatment options so you can feel your best no matter what your age or
where you are in your hormonal transition!
Randi Mann, WHNP-BC, NCMP, is a board-certified womens
health nurse practitioner, NAMS-certified menopause practitioner
and is the owner of Wise Woman Wellness, LLC, an innovative,
wellness and hormone center in De Pere. She is an integrative, functional medicine provider offering natural treatments and prescription medications for thyroid and hormonal imbalances including
customized dosed, bioidentical hormones.
She combines the best of conventional, functional and integrative medicine
to help women. Attend the introductory End Hormone Havoc Stay Sane,
Slim and Sexy seminar offered monthly. Call 920-339-5252 to register. Visit

Beyond the pill

bottle: What do
pharmacists
do?
...............................................................................
By Brian Barkow

Pharmacists and pharmacies do

a lot more than just fill prescriptions. What else can they help
with?
Great question! Glad you asked.
First though, lets start with filling prescriptions, since there is a lot more going on than
just taking tablets from the large shelf bottle
and putting them in a smaller customized
bottle. This may not always be apparent.

Payment

Before filling your prescription, the pharmacy wants to let you know how much it
will cost. If you have insurance, the pharmacy contacts them to determine what
your copay will be. Sometimes this requires
extra paperwork from your doctor, called
a prior authorization, in which case the
pharmacy sends the appropriate paperwork to your doctor. Sometimes there may
be promotions available for the medication
you are taking that can lower your cost.
Other times there may be certain criteria
that qualify you for coverage of medications
and services.
This all may take some time to do, but we
want you to get the medications you need at
prices you can afford.

Filling

Once cost is determined the prescription is

transcribed onto a label and filled accordingly. The pharmacist then checks the
prescription. Here is where a lot of mental
energy is put in on your behalf. These checks
are the core of our job wherever we work.
As pharmacists we verify:
12

Natures Pathways | April 2015

It is the correct drug

It is for the correct person
Your allergies: to prevent harmful

reactions
If the medication is right for you, given
the condition it is intending to treat
The medication will be safe and effective for you
There are no interactions with other
medications you are taking
If there are challenges you face in
taking your medications regularly

Dispensing and counseling

Once we make sure everything looks like

it should, we then want to counsel you
on what we found while checking your
prescription. Usually this is as easy as
showing you your medication, since you
know it best, and asking a question or two
about it; however, if a question came up
while we were checking your prescription
we would take time to verify your medication is working as intended. Similarly, if it is
a new medication we will take time to teach
the important points in taking the medication correctly, to mention what to watch out
for, and to address your concerns.

Vaccinations

Since vaccinations are so important and

making it easier for you to get vaccinated
increases your ability to get vaccinated,
pharmacists have stepped up to this role.
Many of us are trained to give you the vaccinations you need. The types of vaccinations
offered vary from pharmacy to pharmacy,
so please call to ask what is available.

Complete medication reviews

(medication check-ups)

Since you being empowered over your

medications and conditions makes you
healthier, saves you money and prevents
adverse events, a number of insurance
companies offer to pay a pharmacist for
his or her time to go over your medications and conditions with you. These visits
are longer than a medication counsel, typically between 30 and 60 minutes. In these
sessions you bring all your prescription
medications, over-the-counter medications and supplements, and health devices
and the pharmacist goes through each one
with you.
These sessions offer tremendous benefit
to you since they help you review what
you are taking, why you are taking it, how
your doctor wants you to take it and what
effects you should be seeing from it. Also,
they allow the pharmacist to identify what
unintended effects you may be seeing, what
drug-drug interactions you may be experiencing, what challenges you are facing in
taking the medication, what drugs you may
not need to be taking and what drugs you
may benefit by taking. Finally, they give you
talking points so you and your doctor can
discuss the most important issues the next
time you meet.

Hospital pharmacy

As medication therapies become more

complex and require continual monitoring
and adjustments, pharmacists have become
part of the medical teams that care for you
while you are at the hospital. Many of us have
www.naturespathways.com

specialized our knowledge and skills to be

valuable resources to your doctors. Depending upon how the hospital is structured we
may be rounding with your doctors, providing our drug knowledge so they can better
care for you. We may be right beside you in
the Emergency Department, helping provide
the immediate care you need. We may be
out of view, but we are definitely obtaining,
checking and monitoring the medications
you are receiving. We may be refining how
the hospital delivers you your medications so
they are delivered quickly and accurately. We
may be someone you see at your discharge,
helping you understand your medication
changes and aiding your transition home.

Therapy management

Pharmacists also assist in community clinics,

where we aid you in taking control of the
long-term diseases that challenge you in
your life. Again, many of us have specialized our knowledge and skills to aid in your
care. High blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, asthma, heart failure, and bleeding
and blood-clotting disorders are some of the
chronic conditions pharmacists can assist
you and your doctor with in minimizing
their effects on your life.

Compounding

Do you need a specific drug that is not

manufactured? Pharmacists have always
and continue to make medications specifically tailored to your needs. These may be
specific drugs used to help your doctors
diagnose your condition, drugs that need
to be prepared the day of your diagnostic. They may be antibiotics that need to be
compounded at a quantity specific for you.
They may be nutrients made specifically
for what your body needs. Or they may be
simple but practical compounds such as
mixing your skin medication into a cream
you know works best for you, or making it
taste good for your child.
Whatever the specific need, we are there
to make it for you.

The reason your doctors are able to determine what treatment is best for you is by
their knowledge acquired through studies
and trials. Pharmacists also are integrated
into this process, as they monitor the drugs
being studied. The pharmacist may also be
the one who posed the question for the study
or compiled other studies together to determine what the combined information says.
More knowledge helps make better decisions
when choosing what therapy is right for you.

Advocacy and education

Part of a pharmacists job is, in a small way,

working ourselves out of a job. We want you
to know and have control over your medications and conditions; thus, we teach you the
important points, easy ways to act on them
and how you can know your medications are
working.
But another aspect to this is, like this
article, we need to let you and others know
all the things we are capable of doing. Our
goal is the same as your doctors: your care.
Wherever drugs play a part of your care, we
will be right there providing our knowledge,
skills and support.

Tips for
traveling
with
pets
..............................................

any pet owners feel vacations

are more fun with their furry
companions in tow. Traveling
can be more complicated when pets are
part of the equation, but there are ways to
ensure a comfortable and safe trip.
The Humane Society of the United
States says the safest and most comfortable
way for pets to travel is inside a carrier or

crate. Make sure the carrier is big enough

so that the pet is comfortable and has some
mobility, but not so big that he or she can
be jostled around.
Carriers and crates should be anchored
to the vehicle using a seatbelt or another
device. Carriers that can move or bounce
around are dangerous to the pet and the
occupants of the car. Airlines and railways

often insist pets travel in carriers.

The safest place for pets during a road
trip is in the back seat of a car or in a rear
cargo area when possible. In the event of
a crash, air bag deployment can seriously
injure a pet that is riding along in the front
seat.
Pet owners should put together a traveling kit that includes essential items

their pets may need. Such essentials may include identification, a

temporary travel tag for the collar with current contact information, vet records indicating the pet is current on its vaccinations,
plastic bags, food, a favorite toy, and clean-up supplies in the event
of motion sickness. Pets that drink water from an unfamiliar area
may experience stomach discomfort, so bring some water along
as well.
When booking your trip, seek pet-friendly hotels and accommodations. Websites such as www.dogfriendly.com can provide
a number of options. At the hotel, use white noise to keep dogs
from barking at every passerby outside the room. Exercise the
pet before retiring for bed so that he or she is as calm as possible
before sleep.
If your dog is unruly in an unfamiliar location, try offering a
chew toy. The ASPCA says chewing and licking are very soothing
to dogs and may help them fall asleep.
One concern some pet owners have is a dog or cat who will not
relieve himself in a place that is not familiar. Some dogs will hold
it in, which can be uncomfortable and unhealthy. Cats may soil
where they shouldnt. A scent cue, such as a small amount of dirty
litter or a piece of fabric with the pets urine on it, can be used to
entice the dog or cat to relieve itself appropriately on vacation.
Traveling with pets may be a choice or a necessity. Either way,
pet owners should explore their options to make the experience
more comfortable.

April is
National Autism
Awareness
Month
Our story of awareness
and acceptance
......................................................................
By Celeste Brennan, RN, BSN
Celeste Brennan with her son, Gavin.

Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind
dont matter and those who matter dont mind. Dr. Suess
April is National Autism Awareness Month but our awareness
is year-round. As mothers of exceptional children, we live in the
trenches of the ups and downs of childhood behaviors.
Enjoy another excerpt from my friend and colleague who has
been courageous in her advocacy for her son. We are all on this
earth for a reason and we all have different ways of doing things.
Like my aunt Betty always told me, Thats why there is chocolate
and vanilla. No one person is alike and this is what makes the
world spectacular. Please enjoy.
Commentary by Meridith N. Starling, CISW, MSSW

en years ago our first child, Gavin, was born 12 weeks early
and it was truly a miracle that he survived. The next three
years of his life involved monitors, feeding pumps, multiple medications and over 13 various surgeries. It took him quite
a bit longer to reach simple milestones of sitting up, crawling and
walking. Given the extreme circumstances this is not that unusual,
is it? Until he did not talk. An occasional babble, but no words.
Could this be autism?
What is autism?
At age 4 he had an MRI of his head that showed parts of his brain
did not develop correctly. At an appointment with a neurologist, the
doctor quite matter of factly, with no apparent idea that he would
be delivering one of the biggest heart-crushing, hope-destroying
blows that I have experienced since my son was born, said that
there is nothing that can be done, that nothing will fix this. Gavin
will have extreme cognitive and speech limitations for his entire life.
I sat in the exam room, looking at this man with tears welling up
in my eyes, feeling like I was just punched in the gut. Then, he left
16

Natures Pathways | April 2015

the room. All my hope of my son being normal was destroyed.

I eventually recovered and thought about how my son has come
so far, beating some of the most unbeatable odds. I was determined not to let his fight and tenacity to survive be in vain. We
would help him be the best Gavin he could be. I will not give up;
I will never, ever give up.
We took Gavin to a developmental doctor who said we are lucky.
Lucky? Was he serious? He said Gavin has a form of autism and
unlike most people, we know exactly why. From that point we
started Gavin on an autism program that he still does to this day. He
has made progress we never thought possible. He still does not talk
but is learning how to use a program on his iPad that talks for him.
My feelings about Gavins brain defect and autism diagnosis are
complicated. Some days my doubts are soft whispers and other
days it is as if someone is shouting into my ear. Some nights I stay
awake at night wondering what will happen to him when I die. As
parents we are both terrified and brave.
I know the constant movement and obsessiveness, and I know
the disappointment and fear. I know the quiet longing that comes
from being different because I see it every single day. But I am
long past being embarrassed and am all about acceptance.
When you live with someone with autism you use the phrase
for now a lot.
For now, he is doing well in school.
For now, he is not having panic attacks when he leaves the
house for too long.
For now, he is not crying.
For now, he is sleeping through the night.
For now, he stopped flushing everything down the toilet.
For now, he is safe.
My son does not look obviously different, so for onlookers who
www.naturespathways.com

think I am not addressing

my childs odd behaviors
I ask for a little empathy.
Please dont judge you
have never walked in my
shoes.
While children with
autism may act differently
from what others are used
to, that is our normal. They
still are full of emotion,
fierce love, tender hearts
and hope.
Hope.
I heard Gavins brother
once say: This is my
brother, he doesnt talk but God made him exactly the way he
should be because God does not make mistakes!
Gavin is here, on purpose, even when he is silent.

Birth with a
doula is positively
different

By Kamala McCormick

he word doula has been applied to childbirth to refer to

a woman professionally trained and experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and
informational support to the mother before, during and just after
childbirth, according to the book Mothering the Mother. Certified doulas must adhere to a standard of practice and a code of
ethics established by a professional certifying organization.

A doula understands that childbirth is a

uniquely transformative event.

A doula will prepare you for this wild ride.

Doulas understand that knowledge is power and power is
peace. That peace is whats most needed during childbirth. Many
doulas instruct childbirth classes that not only teach about labor
and birth, but encourage you to open your mind to the importance of the mind, body and spirit connection at birth.
Throughout several meetings during your pregnancy, a doula
will help you explore your vision for your birth. She will provide
evidence-based information and research. You will then have
knowledge of many options available so you are able to make
choices best for you as you plan to turn your birth vision into reality.

A doula will remind you that your body

knows how to give birth.

Remember this, for it is as true as true gets. Your body is not

a lemon. You are not a machine. The creator is not a careless
mechanic. Human female bodies have the same potential to give
birth well as aardvarks, lions, rhinoceri, elephants, moose and water
buffalo. Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far,
I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body.

Ina May Gaskin
18

Natures Pathways | April 2015

Doulas are labor experts.

During your pregnancy, your doula will teach you relaxation

and pain management methods that will be specific to your individual needs. These techniques will be valuable throughout labor
and you will rely on them as labor progresses and becomes more
intense. When the moment of self-doubt arrives and you say, Ive
changed my mind, I cant do this!, a doula will take your hands,
look into your eyes and simply remind you, Yes, you can; youre
doing it now! Doulas understand how to unleash the power of
positive thinking and affirmation for birthing mothers. They
believe in your perfectly designed body and will empower you to
believe in yourself.

Doulas are evidence-based practice.

Research shows that women giving birth with the presence of

a doula receive many benefits and positive outcomes, such as
shorter labors, fewer induced labors, fewer epidurals, fewer cesarean deliveries, greater breastfeeding success and greater overall
satisfaction, according to The Doula Book.
Many elderly women who can barely remember the names of
their children will still be able to recall their birth experiences.
The influence of a certified doula is paramount in the process.
The day your baby is born is one day in your life as a woman,
but the experience of giving birth will strengthen and empower
you for the rest of your life. Women in labor need to feel cared for,
supported, listened to and honored. Birth with a doula is positively different!

Can yoga
improve your
running
and cycling
performance?
......................................................................
By Lauren Quella and Jayne Lang

he arrival of spring signals the start of the season for

runners and cyclists. Its the time of registering for races
and outlining a training schedule. Its the time to take the
bike off the trainer and onto the road. Its the time to start ramping
up the number of miles logged each week.
Make this season one of your best when you incorporate yoga
into your training schedule. Yoga has many benefits for runners
and cyclists. By increasing strength, flexibility and mental focus,
yoga can help you recover faster, prevent injuries and improve
your performance.

Increasing strength for runners

Whether you are a competitive runner or a run-for-fun type, you

know how the constant pounding on the pavement takes a toll on
your body. The unfortunate result can be pain, often in the knees
and back, that makes running less enjoyable and can prevent you
from reaching your goals.
By practicing yoga, all of the large and small muscle groups are
worked and strengthened in a balanced approach. Where running
can create tightness in the quadriceps, yoga builds strength and flexibility through the quadriceps, hamstrings and hips to stabilize the
legs. Yoga poses also build strength through the core, which is key for
runners as the core generates power for your stride. A strong core also
enables you to maintain proper posture and balance while running.

Increasing strength for cyclists

Once on-the-road training begins, a cyclist logs many hours in

the saddle. Similar to runners, the repetitive motion of cycling
puts continuous demands on the same muscle groups, which may
lead to pain and overuse injuries.
20

Natures Pathways | April 2015

In contrast, yoga focuses on all muscles equally. While leg

strength, and quad strength in particular, is critical for cyclists,
failing to strengthen the hamstrings, hips, back and core can
result in fatigue and loss of power. Utilizing yoga to build strength
through these underdeveloped muscles will improve endurance
and performance. A strong core will also do the work to balance
you on the bike so the legs can focus on delivering power to the
pedals instead of balancing the body.

Increasing flexibility

For both runners and cyclists, the stretching aspect of yoga

helps your muscles and joints stay healthy and injury-free. Tight
muscles and joints are stiffer and more brittle, which makes them
more prone to soreness and injuries.
Of particular concern are the hamstrings and hips for both
runners and cyclists. An inversion like Legs-Up-The-Wall, a pose
that involves elevating your feet above your head, gently stretches
the hamstrings, legs and lower back. Increasing flexibility through
yoga poses decreases stiffness and pain, results in greater ease of
movement, shortens recovery time and decreases your chance of
future injuries.

Increasing mental focus

Besides the physical benefits, yoga provides mental benefits for

runners and cyclists, too. As the initial excitement and anticipation of starting the season give way to the stresses and demands
of training and performing in races, you need mental toughness
to reach your goals.
Yoga teaches mental focus and tenacity through the practice
of holding difficult poses. In Tree pose, you balance on one foot

with your arms extended above your head. Your mind and body
must be connected and focused on maintaining your balance or
youll tip over. Learning to listen to your body and center your
attention allows runners and cyclists to block out distractions
and nervousness before a race. It also provides the concentration
required to keep you going through the intense times in training
and competitions.
When adding yoga to your training schedule, the intensity of
your training should dictate the intensity of your yoga practice. If
youre a competitive athlete who logs a lot of miles, a more relaxed
yoga class like Restorative Yoga will be good for an active recovery
day. If your training is less intense or if you utilize cross-training
days, go for a more intense yoga class like Yoga Body Bootcamp or
PiYo. Dont be afraid to try different classes until you find the one
thats right for you. And, when the season ends, your yoga practice doesnt have to. Use yoga year-round to build and maintain
strength, flexibility and mental focus.

Giving your
child your best
Tips for raising and
educating your young ones
.....................................................................
By Teresa Kappelle

have sat through many parenting and teaching seminars.

Every single one of them has the answer for dealing with
childhood behaviors. Sometimes I leave feeling confident:
Hey I know what I am doing. I got this! Other times, I leave
feeling defeated: Of course a good mom would do that. Why
dont I? If I just did everything they said consistently, my child
would never do XYZ.
We all want the one handbook that guides us through parenthood. The fact is that we need several books to help us in our
parenthood journey. We need to take a little from here and a
smidge from there until we find what works in the moment for
our child. The honest truth is that there is no one expert who has
an answer.
Children mine, yours, ours will make mistakes. Parenting
classes cannot prevent these mistakes, and as a parent, I secretly
hope for that golden nugget of advice. But really, the best we can ask
of ourselves is how to guide the children in our lives through poor
choices while keeping their egos intact. There are lots of buzz words
that are thrown around regarding this topic: positive parenting,
loving family, etc. Call it what you will, here is what I have found
works for the most part, both as a parent and as an educator:
START WITH A CLOSE, STRONG AND WARM BOND WITH
YOUR CHILD. Children who feel connected want to please. I

have always had a difficult time putting words to how I interact

with my son and students. If you met me, you would think that
I would run a willy-nilly classroom, but in actuality, my classrooms are calm and productive, yet happy places. I am genuine
not just with the adults in my life but with the children as well.
And children pick up on this. In return, I find respect and a
natural discipline that falls into place.
One little
teacher trick that I have picked up over the years is to lay out my
expectations before every turn. Do the work first and life runs
much more smoothly. Tell children what you want them to do.
SET

22

LIMITS/BOUNDARIES/EXPECTATIONS.

Natures Pathways | April 2015

BUT BE FLEXIBLE WHILE CONSISTENT. Nothing works

consistently day after day. Thats where flexibility comes in. And
here is a simple fact: People children are not black and white.
Behaviors do not happen in a vacuum. We must remember that you
and I do not react to situations consistently, nor should we expect
our children to do the same. Set up boundaries and expectations
but recognize when those are not working and need to be changed.
TEACH YOUR CHILD TO RESPECTFULLY VOICE OPINIONS. Everyone wants to be heard, but I dont want to listen to a

person who is screaming, crying and throwing themselves on the

ground. Show your child through modeling what discussion looks
like. If you yell and scream at your child, how can you not expect
the same in return? Show your child that moments of frustration
can be talked through.
AND THEN, BE COMPASSIONATE AND EMPATHETIC.

Listen to your child. It feels terrible to make a poor choice. My

second-grader lied to me today. And it was a doozy, not just a little
white lie. I felt anger, frustration and disappointment, but so did
he. His consequences really upset him, and we hugged through
the disappointment. The consequences are still there, but the
judgment on my part is not.
BE CALM, CONCISE AND LOGICAL. When those ugly

moments do arise, avoid long lectures, loud voices or corporal

punishments. Get down on your childs level. Let logical consequences guide a situation. Did you take the crayon from the
basket when I asked you not to? Then that utensil makes you not
listen, and youll need to use something different.
Last, lets remember that our voices become our childrens inner voice
eventually. Give your child a gift of a kind, compassionate voice.

Compost: The
soil amender!
Say what?
......................................................................
By Sarah A. Everson

ompost isnt considered soil; it is a

soil amendment. How exactly does
compost amend soil? Why does
soil need to be amended? How does that
dynamic work?
The first step is to understand what soil
and compost are.
An inch of topsoil can take up to 500
years to create, so you can see why you
want to understand your soil. Its not

simply dirt. Soil has a unique blend of

45 percent minerals, 25 percent water, 25
percent air and 5 percent organic matter.
The minerals in soil consist of nitrogen,
phosphorus and potassium. The organic
matter comes from compost. Compost is
easier to understand. It is a blend of carbon
and nitrogen material that breaks down
and turns into organic matter.
Nitrogen allows plants to use

for myself
for a friend
for a family member

carbohydrates to create energy for growth

and strength. Phosphorous allows plants to
breathe. It also allows energy to be transferred and stored, as well as helps plants
use water efficiently. Potassium helps a
plant metabolize its food to create energy.
Potassium also helps control hydration
and biochemical reactions inside the plant.
You want your soil to have a healthy
balance as mentioned above. Plants cannot
grow well without the proper soil, similar
to how humans need a healthy diet. If
your soil lacks essential minerals you can
compensate by mixing it with compost to
supply nitrogen, bone meal for phosphorus, and wood ash for potassium.

How can compost amend

your soil?

If you live with heavy clay soil you know

it can take forever for water to drain and
youve seen how the soil clumps up into
clay balls. It is best to work a large amount
of compost into clay soil when the moisture
level is normal not too wet and not too
dry. After working compost into clay soil
you will see improved drainage because
the compost combines with the tiny clay
particulate to form larger chunks. The
larger compost-clay particles also improve
air penetration into the soil. Increased air
in the soil limits compaction, which allows
roots to penetrate the soil better. Lastly,

essential minerals

compost binds to the clay, making the soil
more workable and less sticky.
You can apply compost to sandy soil at
any time without the additional challenges
of working with clay. Those with mostly
sandy soil may be frustrated by the speed
with which water or fertilizers seep right
through it. Compost mixed with sandy soil
increases water retention anywhere from
10 to 1,000 times. The compost also keeps
all the important nutrients in the root zone
rather than letting them just wash away.
Once you have figured out what type
of soil you have, you need to think about
what types of vegetables, flowers, trees
or shrubs you want to grow. Different
plants have different soil requirements.
To simplify things, you cant go wrong
mixing compost in with the top 2 inches of
your soil to make sure you have a healthy
balance of nutrients. Remember to reapply
compost as a topdressing in the garden all
season long. Compost not only amends
soil and gives plants a boost right away but
also slowly releases nutrients so plants can
thrive for months.

Spinning toward
recovery
How pole fitness helped one
woman heal from abuse
................................................................
By Breanna*

could hardly contain myself. It was all I talked about for

weeks, and it was all I could think about as soon as I knew it
was coming. When my dancing pole finally arrived, I cried.
The events of the last four years came rushing back, and I
couldnt hold back the tears. Pole fitness saved my life, and having
my very own pole was a reminder of where I had been and how
far I had come.
Just prior to my discovery of pole fitness through a local studio
in Appleton I exited a mentally and emotionally abusive relationship. He would tell me that I wasnt pretty enough, smart enough, or
good enough in general. He convinced me that I was the root of all
of our problems, and I believed everything he told me about myself.
Once I got out of that relationship, I began working on destroying those thoughts and telling myself that I was worth something.
I used to stand in front of the mirror every morning and tell
myself that I was beautiful, I was smart, and I was most definitely
good enough. Though it helped, I was still stuck in a self-defeating
mindset. I wasnt comfortable in my own body or with seeing it at
all. I thought that it might help to exercise, and the results might
help me see myself in a better light.
Before I started, if someone had told me that pole fitness would
change my life, I would have laughed at them. When I started, I
thought that it would be a once-a-week fitness class and nothing
more.
I have never been more wrong.
Pole fitness is empowering and I soon became addicted. I began
attending pole classes as a depressed and unhappy young woman,
convinced that I was worth nothing and could achieve nothing
26

Natures Pathways | April 2015

of value. I was embarrassed of my body and did my best to hide

it. Today, I am happy and confident, and believe that my body
is beautiful and capable. I no longer wear long basketball shorts
and cutoff T-shirts to class. I can look at the wall of mirrors in the
studio and not be afraid in fact I am happy with what I see.
As I progressed through my recovery, I learned three important
lessons. First, you have to be the one to instigate change. The only
one who can change you is you. The only reason I believed what
he told me is because I allowed myself to think that.
This leads to my second lesson: The importance of a positive
mental script. Once again, you are the only one with the power
to change your thoughts. This means that you must rewrite your
mental script. Instead of responding to the world with negativity
and a poor self-image, respond with positivity and confidence.
Its not easy, Ill admit. I started by standing in front of the
mirror and repeating positive thoughts out loud. I also worked to
recognize my negative responses to situations and made an effort
to change them. Everything was not my fault, and everything was
going to be OK.
Lastly, and most importantly, surround yourself with positive and supportive people. I have great family and friends, but I
couldnt have made the recovery I did without all the ladies of my
local aerial dance studio. The instructors are always positive and
smiling. They know how to challenge students, and their belief
in my ability to succeed is refreshing. My fellow students are
supportive and encouraging. With such a positive environment to
escape to once or twice a week, Im not surprised that my recovery
progressed as it did.
www.naturespathways.com

I believe that recovery

is a never-ending process.
You will never forget
what happened, and
you will always need
to push those negative thoughts aside.
Remember that you have
the power to help yourself feel better. Surround
yourself with positive
people, and keep trying.
Pursue activities that
empower you! Im biased,
but the supportive environment and the empowering sport of pole fitness,
along with my personal
efforts, where what helped
me realize the truth: I
am worthy, capable and
beautiful.

Grow your
garden
pain-free
....................................................
By Dr. Brad Donnermeyer

he days are getting longer; soon spring will be in full swing

and it will be time to work on your yard and plant your
garden. Gardening can be a relaxing and enjoyable form of
exercise but if done improperly it can result in injuries.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
in 2010 more than 41,000 Americans injured themselves while
gardening and more than 127,000 were injured while operating a
lawn mower. While gardening and yard work are excellent forms
of exercise, after a long winter of inactivity people tend to do too
much, too soon.
It is very important to have a warm-up and cool-down routine
while gardening. Take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water and
protect yourself from the sun. Alternate sides when using equipment as often as possible to balance muscle usage, and change
your stance and motion frequently.
When lifting, take your time and lift with your legs rather
than your back. Carry heavy objects as close your body as
possible. And remember: It is very important to stretch
your lower back, hamstrings, quadriceps and forearms
before and after lifting or engaging in other gardening
activities.
If you do experience any back or neck pain, stop what
you are doing and use ice on the area injured. If the pain
persists, see a chiropractor they can help you recover
faster and get back in your garden sooner.

It is very
important to have a

Recovering
wholeness
through tagteam trauma
healing
Part II
...............................................................
By Victoria L. Huss

Editors note: Part I of Recovering wholeness through tag-team

trauma healing appeared in the February issue of the Northeast
Wisconsin edition of Natures Pathways. You can find that article and
others written by Victoria L. Huss online at NaturesPathways.com.

n the first part of this story, Caroline* consulted with a Certified Rolfer for assistance with addressing chronic pain. The
Rolfer determined that Caroline would be a great candidate
to receive Rolfing Structural Integration (or Rolfing SI). However,
Caroline needed guidance with developing healthier emotional
coping skills and in forming a stronger internal sense of security
so she was given the contact information of a skilled trauma therapist. The Rolfer envisioned that with time, Caroline could have
a clearer sense of boundaries of where she ended and another
person began so that she could rediscover her center. (The Rolfers work of balancing the body to find the bodys healthiest center
of gravity combined with the emotional work of finding centeredness and grounding is an especially potent combination.)
The Rolfer did not always hear back from clients who were
referred out to other professionals like this and was pleasantly
surprised when Caroline strutted back into her office a year later.
There was a definitive shift in Carolines energy and disposition
this time around. She seemed more confident, more knowing.
Her physical issues and pain already were eased somewhat. She
inhabited her body a bit more but she still needed help feeling
more at home in her body. Carolines hard work with her therapist created some space and resiliency for the potential of change
to occur. Because of this new adaptability, the Rolfer had no
30

Natures Pathways | April 2015

reservations of working with Caroline as long as she continued to

see her therapist throughout the Rolfing SI process.
Carolines first Rolfing SI session began with an experiential
mapping of her kinesphere. The kinesphere is personal space
that an individual moves and inhabits both with and without
awareness. Caroline found herself hypersensitive on the front and
left sides of her body, yet very unaware of her right and back sides
which seemed to be blind spots. Now it made sense to Caroline
why she sometimes felt uneasy whenever someone entered her
space in a certain way.
The Rolfer and Caroline played a little distance game back and
forth slowing things down so that Caroline could really get
in touch with the subtle cues her body was giving her whenever
she felt that her personal space/safety zone felt invaded. Caroline learned to tune out those signals some years ago and found
it amazing to be able to feel them again. She also learned how
shifting her perception and consciously feeling the support and
space behind her back allowed her to stand more upright with
little effort.
When the table-work portion of Carolines Rolfing SI work
began, the Rolfer instructed Caroline to breathe into various parts
of her body as they were being manipulated with firm pressure
and long strokes. Caroline found it strange to breathe into her
arm but she eventually found she could focus and relax enough
to breathe all the way down into her fingertips. After connecting
with her body and breath in such a new way, Caroline could now
experience and feel more of her 3-D self. Her arms felt lighter as
she breathed into her whole upper torso with ease.
www.naturespathways.com

The months passed and the Rolfing SI sessions continued. Caroline realized that for years, she actually spent very little time being
in her body. Feeling greater security within, she remembered
that she could consciously inhabit more and more of her body.
The sessions heightened her awareness of how she held herself.
She began to notice how her shoulders and chest tightened when
she was around negative people.
Becoming more in touch with her bodys subtle ways of communicating gave Caroline more of a sense of control over her environment. After much listening to her body, Caroline concluded
that she really did need a different job that better suited her intelligence and physical needs. She also began to slowly remove the
difficult people in her life who tended to take more than give.
The combination of Rolfing SI and trauma therapy helped
empower Caroline to become more conscious thus allowing
her to make healthier choices for herself, instead of reacting all
the time. Restoring her center was a multidimensional approach
creating lasting change. Carolines efforts rewarded her with
wonderful new possibilities for moving, being and living.

Rebounding
from a late
start to
retirement
savings
.............................................................

ome people do not have the ability to

begin saving for retirement early on.
Others may have brushed retirement
savings aside for so long that they are now
worried that its too late to begin socking
away money for retirement.
While its best to start saving for retirement
as early as possible, the good news is that its
never too late to start planning for retirement. If your 40th birthday has long passed
and youre finally thinking ahead to retirement, consider these catch-up strategies.
RESEARCH
TAX-ADVANTAGEOUS
RETIREMENT SAVINGS PLANS. A

financial planner can point you in the right

direction, or consult with your employer
about employee programs. Deposit money
into a 401(k) or 403(b) plan or another
retirement vehicle. Jump on any opportunities when your employer matches
invested funds. Investigate an individual
retirement account (IRA) and find out
if there are any government incentives.
Depending on your age, you may be able
to deposit more money into such accounts
than other investors.
32

Natures Pathways | April 2015

CUT BACK ON EXPENSES. Cutting back

on unnecessary expenses is a great way to

save more money for retirement. Figure
out where you can save some money you
can then allocate to retirement savings.
Maybe you can reduce insurance coverage on an older car or raise your deductible? Downsize cable packages or skip that
costly cup of coffee on the way to work.
Perhaps its time to look for a smaller, less
expensive home or a compact car instead
of an SUV. Any money saved now will
benefit you when the time comes time to
bid farewell to the workforce.
DELAY YOUR RETIREMENT. Many

people who retire find themselves bored

and looking for ways to fill their time, and
as a result more and more people are delaying their retirement, which also gives them
more time to save for that day when they
do call it quits. If you want to work less,
discuss and negotiate a phased retirement
with your bosses that allows you to stick
with your employer but gradually work
fewer hours until you retire completely.
You may be able to work part-time for

several years and retire when youre most

comfortable.
CONSIDER
MORE
AGGRESSIVE
FUNDS. Even if you are 50 you still have a

few decades before retirement, which leaves

lots of time to grow your retirement savings.
But you may want to consider more aggressive funds that can help you catch up more
quickly than less aggressive investments.
Just know that aggressive funds may also
leave you susceptible to substantial losses.
DONT AMASS DEBT. If youre saving

for retirement but only paying minimum

balances on your credit cards, then youre
not really saving. Pay down credit card debt
before you begin to set aside money for
retirement.
Delaying retirement planning may mean
you have to work a little harder to build up a
solid reserve. But by following some financial tips and persevering, you can still enjoy
retirement with security.

RECYCLE MORE, LANDFILL LESS

How the Tri-County Recycling Facility
is shaping the future of recycling

Its a simple lesson weve all been taught: the more

we recycle, the less we put into our landfills. But
recyclings benefit to our planet and northeast
Wisconsin doesnt stop there. By using your
recycling bin more than your trash can, youre
helping save money, energy and even jobs.

A tale of three counties

What makes recycling in our area distinctive is a truly
unique partnership of three counties: Brown, Outagamie and Winnebago. Fifteen years ago, the three
counties all had their own individual recycling facilities and landfills. But in 2001, the leadership of the
three solid waste departments questioned whether
there was a better way to manage the areas waste.
Its pretty rare to have that much infrastructure
within a 60-mile radius, explains Jennifer Semrau,
recycling specialist for Winnebago County. The
counties realized that they could operate one
landfill at a time, with the other two counties
transferring their waste to that landfill. This would
save money by cutting down on resources, equipment and energy needed to run the two other
landfills. The counties also increased the efficiency
of their recycling process by combining efforts.

A powerful tri-county recycling team was

born. Brown, Outagamie and Winnebago counties committed to a 25-year agreement to share
landfill space and coordinate recycling efforts. The
Tri-County Recycling Facility, located in Appleton,
is owned by all three counties.
And improvements havent stopped there.
In 2008, the tri-county partners began to
examine whether they could offer single-stream
recycling. Single-stream recycling means individuals dont need to separate their recyclables;
instead, all items (paper, cans and bottles) go into
one large bin.
Because the three counties worked together,
we were able to invest the necessary capital. The
initial cost of the facility was nearly $10 million, so
its very cost prohibitive for an individual county,
but by putting our resources together we were
able to renovate the existing Outagamie County
recycling facility into the single-stream facility we
have today, Semrau says. It is actually the largest
municipally owned and operated recycling facility
in the state of Wisconsin.
Another aspect about the Tri-County Recycling
Facility that might surprise you is that its not paid
for by tax dollars.

None of the three counties solid waste

programs are on the tax levy, explains Semrau.
They are all independent and essentially operated as businesses.
Chris Miller, Outagamie County Recycling Coordinator compares her countys waste management services to the Outagamie County Regional
Airport: That is also an enterprise fund. No taxes
go to fund the airport because they, like us, make
their own money.
So how does the Tri-County Recycling Facility
make money? It all starts at the curb.

A surprising journey
When you toss your empty soup can into your
recycling bin, your part in the recycling story may
have come to an end but your soup can is only
beginning its adventure.
First, the contents of your recycling bin are
picked up by a hauling truck. Its a noisy, but
short ride to the Tri-County Recycling Facility,
where your soup can and its fellow recyclables
are weighed and then dumped into a large room
called the tip floor.
Next, the soup can travels along a conveyor belt.

Its ignored by the facilitys initial sorting staff, who

focus on looking for undesirable materials like plastic
bags that can jam the recycling equipment. The staff
also removes overly large metal or plastic items that
wont fit through the facilitys equipment.
Once past the sorters, your soup can passes
through a series of disc screens which separate
the paper from containers. These screens are what
make single-stream recycling possible.
Because paper is flat and two-dimensional, it
stays on top of the screen and the containers will
fall in between the screens, Miller explains. When
you take a cup of sand and gravel and you pour
it onto a screen, the gravel will stay on top and
the sand will fall through. Similarly, the paper will
ride on top of the screen and the containers will
fall through, get caught on a conveyor belt below
and travel to the container line.
After four disc screens, the paper and containers are fully separated and your soup can, along
with empty plastic detergent bottles, soda
cans and more travel on to yet another sorting
area. There, the sorting staff focuses on just one
type of material. One station will grab milk jugs
and another, detergent bottles. Meanwhile, a
computer eye called an optical sorter works to
identify a particular type of plastic; any container
with that plastic type is blown off the main
conveyor belt by a quick blast of air. From there, it
travels along another belt into a storage silo.
Aluminum bottles and cans are repelled off
the belt by an eddy current, while a large magnet
picks up your soup can, along with other steel-like
containers such as coffee cans.
Its not yet the end of the road
for your little soup can. Now its
ready to begin its new life as a recycled product, and it wont have to
travel too far to do so.

Recycling has a
local impact
All of the materials we collect
here get sold to a third party for
further recycling, explains Mark
Walter, Brown County Business

Development Manager. Its a goal

of ours to try to sell as locally as
possible for the betterment of the
Wisconsin and Midwest economy.
The three counties sell most of
the collected paper to local paper
mills in Neenah, Menasha and Green
Bay. Plastics are sold mostly to Michigan and Wisconsin facilities, while
glass goes to a buyer in East Troy, near Milwaukee.
Your soup can will be purchased by a Midwest,
family-owned scrap metal processor.
In addition to bettering the local economy, the
Tri-County Recycling Facilitys efforts conserve
energy (it takes less energy to use recycled material
rather than virgin material in manufacturing), save
natural resources (fewer trees and land are used to
produce items we use in our everyday lives), and
reduce landfill space (only 7 percent of the items
received by the Tri-County facility are landfilled).

An eye on the future

If your recycling efforts are the star of the show,
the Tri-County Recycling Facility and its staff are
the supporting cast and theyre always looking
to improve the script.
Just last year, the counties invested another $2
million into the facility to modify it, adding additional equipment and sorting stations, all with the
goal of accepting more packaging products, like
milk and juice cartons and plastic deli, produce,
bakery and dairy containers.
In the past, plastic recycling was incredibly confusing. Of all the items people recycled,
whether or not a particular plastic item was recyclable or not was the biggest question we received,
hands down, Semrau says. With the investments
that we made this past year, were able to now say
you can recycle all plastic bottles and containers
dont sweat the numbers, just put all your plastic
bottles and containers in your recycling.

The dos and donts

of recycling
Acceptable items:

Cartons (milk, juice, soup, wine, etc.)

Newspapers, magazines,
junk mail and catalogs
Cardboard and paperboard packaging
(food boxes, soda boxes, etc.)
Office, writing and school
paper, envelopes
Phonebooks, softcover
and hardcover books
Paper bags, toilet paper
cores, paper egg cartons
Shredded paper (placed in a
paper bag and stapled shut)
Plastic beverage and household
bottles and jugs
Plastic dairy containers (yogurt, sour
cream, margarine, cottage cheese, etc.)
Plastic produce, bakery and
deli containers (berry, donut,
potato salad, etc.)
Glass food and beverage
bottles and jars (all colors)
Aluminum, steel, tin, bi-metal bottles
and cans (including empty aerosol cans)

Unacceptable items:

PLASTIC BAGS They get caught in the

facilitys equipment and slow operations and
sometimes even damage it! Instead, bring
your bags to your local grocery or retail stores
that accept them. The bags are recycled into
plastic lumber.
NEEDLES/SHARPS These pose a safety
and biohazard risk. Instead, take your needles
and sharps to a specified collection site, like
any local emergency room.

A fresh new
skin care ritual
for
spring
............................................................................
By Caitlin Brotz

ow that the cruel, cruel winter is

behind us, or at least it better be,
we can turn a fresh face forward
and think spring. In spring, we dont need
as much moisture as we did to survive
winter, but we do want to keep our skin
hydrated for when those summer rays get
here.
Rice bran is a really great moisturizer
this time of year. This oil is ideal for your
face and body. Rice bran oil is loaded with
natural vitamin E to help defend against
the elements: sun, wind and pollution.
Also occurring in rice bran are natural
sunscreens perfect for mature, delicate
or sensitive skin as well as youthful skin.
Rice bran is said to prevent wrinkles,
absorb dirt from pores and balance natural
oils in the skin.
The nice thing about rice bran is that
it light. A small amount covers the skin
without making it feel heavy.
Another springtime ritual is the use of
ayurvedic herbs. The use of these natural
herbs helps to remove toxins in the skin

that have been building up all winter. Chickpea flour, ground nuts,
ayurvedic spices, sandalwood and rose powder
are all examples of
ayurvedic herbs that help
balance the skin tone
and moisturize. Using
these herbs as a facial wash is a great way
to restore balance to your skin after it has
been subjected to our Wisconsin winters.
Lastly, a good deep cleansing is in order
this time of year. Rhassoul clay has the
ability to pull dirt from deep out of the
pores without stripping your skin of its
natural oils. Using a mask like Rhassoul
clay leaves the facial canvas brighter, less
dull and dewier. A deep cleansing mask
like this should be used once a week.
Gently helping your skin transition from
winter to spring will encourage it to readjust itself naturally. This helps to promote
balance, leading to an even complexion
and a healthy glow we all crave.

Become an
effective
communicator
Prevent confusion, hurt feelings
and more with these tips
...........................................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC

hen it comes to real estate, the key is location, location,

location. When it comes to communication, the key
is effective, effective, effective. Although most everyone
has the need to communicate on a daily basis, many of us could
help ourselves and others by doing it better.
During a recent visit to my parents, we were catching up and
making a plan for our time together. My parents shared that they
had one commitment for the day: They needed to go to Maryhill, the local nursing home, and push people down. My husband
(of course knew what they were referring to) responded, Theres
something that sounds not quite right about that. Is that what you
do for entertainment around here? Go the nursing home to push
people down? We all had a good laugh.
My mom and dad are very active volunteers at the nursing
home. One of the things they do is to push the residents in their
wheelchairs or beds down to the chapel for the daily service or

40

Natures Pathways | April 2015

mass. They have over the years shortened the description of this
labor of love to pushing people down.
This bring-a-smile-to-your-face story does demonstrate a
very important principle of communication: Our actions, body
language or even words all play significant parts in communicating effectively with others. In this story, my parents words
certainly did not convey the message they intended. Not being
aware that there is often an under the radar or read between
the lines message in communication can create problems with
misunderstandings, confusion, hurt feelings and even significant
conflicts in relationships.
Here is an example of a more common message mix-up: The
dishes are always left out on the counter. I have asked you to put
them in the dishwasher so I dont have to deal with them when I
get home from work. Given the chance to explore, the connection is made that the dishes on the counter is not the real issue

www.naturespathways.com

Problem-solving can seem like

trying to genuinely be helpful
but often it will disconnect
the lines of communication.
People often will note I
didnt ask them to fix it; I just
wanted them to listen.
but rather the message sent by the action is what hurts. Often the
message is: They dont respect me. They dont care about me or I
dont matter enough to them.
At this point, the individual who is leaving the dishes out
usually indicates that they truly do respect and care about the
other. It was never their intention to be disrespectful or less caring
towards the person. They just had no idea that their actions were
sending such a hurtful message.
One way each of us can try to lessen message mix-ups is to walk
aware of what possible message we might be sending. If someone
gets upset about what we have said or done, checking in with the
person to ask what message they received from us could go a long
way to minimize hurt feelings and reset the relationship. Another
option is to remember to ask ourselves What message do I want
my spouse, my friend, my parent to take away? Working from
that question, we can make choices that insure the message we
want to send is the message that gets sent. We can make sure that
our actions and our delivery system are all working to send the
message we want.
Another way to increase our effectiveness as communicators is to do less MAPing and more SAVing. Let me
explain. The acronym MAP stands for minimizing, arguing and
problem-solving.
When being approached by another person, communication
is more likely to breakdown if we inadvertently minimize, argue
or problem-solve. Each of these responses exists on a spectrum.

Minimizing can be as subtle as not making eye contact to something more significant, such as responding to someone with a
statement like, Why do you think this is such a big deal? Or,
Really I dont have time.
By definition, arguing is an exchange or expression of diverging
or opposite views, typically in a heated or angry way. Clearly this
type of response will hinder effective communication. Arguing
can also sound like this: If you wouldnt leave your clothes on
the floor, I wouldnt have to get mad and the evening wouldnt be
ruined. In this case, arguing can be described as tit for tat or the
effort to cite evidence in support of your idea, action or theory.
Problem-solving can seem like trying to genuinely be helpful but
often it will disconnect the lines of communication. People often
will note I didnt ask them to fix it; I just wanted them to listen.
Whereas MAPing is not the answer, SAVing is the more effective approach to communication. Ultimately, each of us has a
need to be seen, heard and valued. Meeting this need is the way to
enriching communication. Seeing the other person when you are
approached includes making eye contact and even shifting your
physical orientation toward the person in other words, turning
and looking at the person. Attending to the person is another
name for listening. This response can include acknowledging
with a nod or expressing having heard what is said by paraphrasing or restating. Valuing is sending the message that the person
matters to you, and that what is being said is important because
you care about them. Valuing does not mean you are in agreement; it means you are willing to honor and respect the persons
thoughts and feelings.

Lets catch a
big one and
make Bruce a
happy
camper
......................................................................
By Kathi Bloy

ruce Hietpas was a happy camper last Sept. 16 when he

revved up his motorcycle and started to work. It was 5:30
in the morning and sunrise was still an hour away. After
being laid off from another employer, the Little Chute resident
had been working at Appvion in Appleton for three months and
had just gotten group insurance. Life looked good again.
Bruce doesnt know if he even saw the white-tailed deer that
burst onto the road to collide with his machine. If it werent for
the pictures, if someone told me I was in an accident, Id laugh at
him. I dont remember a thing: being in the hospital, the accident
itself, nothing.
But pictures of his broken motorcycle prove that Bruce had an
accident. Three people who saw it have told him that he should be
dead. Yet he broke no bones. The only obvious injuries were road
rash and a scuffed face. But once he came to, Bruce experienced
double vision, the result of a traumatic brain injury. His doctor
told him the usual recovery period was six months to a year. Four
months after his accident, Bruce returned to work.
I always believed in God a little bit, he said, but now theres
no doubt in my mind that theres a God. He worked wonders with
me.
On Saturday, May 2, he will have an opportunity to celebrate
those wonders. Paula Simon, a former co-worker, is part of a team
working with Community Benefit Tree, Inc. (CBT) in Kaukauna
to plan a Celebration of Support that day from 4 to 8 p.m. at
Tanners Grill and Bar in Kimberly. They hope the funds they raise
will help pay some of Bruce and Janets remaining medical bills
and living expenses.

Below: Bruces accident scene.

We could never have done this on our own, Simon said.

There are advantages to working with CBT. They really outline
things for you and tell you exactly what needs to be done. They
set deadlines and meeting times and let you know your responsibilities. They supply some equipment and supplies and they also
supply a tax ID number. A lot of businesses that weve asked for
donations want that number right away. CBT takes care of all the
financial tracking so we dont have to worry about money going
through different hands. Everybody who donates will get a receipt
from CBT to use as a tax deduction.
I dont like accepting help, Bruce said, but there are times in
www.naturespathways.com

your life when you dont have a choice. What theyre doing for me
is really neat. You never realize how expensive things are until you
have an accident. It doesnt take long for the bills to mount.
Today Bruce is happy that he still has a job at Appvion. He
recounted how someone from work sat down with him and his
wife and helped them with the reams of insurance paperwork.
But what really impressed him was the way the company treated
him. They kept my job for me when I was off for four months,
he said, and thats rare. From day one they kept in touch to see
how I was doing. Everything theyve done has been good. The
union passed the hat to help me out too. And when I got back,
even people I didnt know asked how I was doing and told me it
was good to see me back. The whole attitude at that place is just
phenomenal.

Safe, simple
and scientific:
The functional
medicine
approach to
autism
health
..............................................................
By Christine Vander Wielen, MSW, LCSW,
and Scott Vander Wielen, DC

s indicated by recent statistics from the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention, autism spectrum disorder affects
1 in 68 children. This rate has increased sharply over the
past few years and is now considered to be a worldwide epidemic.
Autism has been observed to affect boys four times as often as girls.
However, these statistics do not even begin to tell the story.
Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning it affects people differently, according to the Autism Research Institute (ARI). Just as
it affects people differently, it is now thought that there are many
causes of autism. A few researchers have even suggested a name
change to autism spectrum disorders.
The word autism literally means aloneness or living in ones own
world. It is common for individuals with autism to feel cut off or
to cut themselves off from others. Sadly, some family members also

feel alone or cut off as they pursue answers and try to find resources.
According to Dr. Janet Lintala, functional medicine practitioner,
author, speaker and mother of an autistic child, the best approach to
working with individuals with autism is a team approach.
First and foremost, the parents must lead a team of professionals who are highly skilled in their respective disciplines. One team
member needs to be a doctor familiar with the health problems
often associated with autism. The Autism Research Institute, states
that some of the health problems often associated with autism are
gastrointestinal problems, nutritional and metabolic deficiencies,
toxic metal burden, and immune dysfunction.
Although individuals with autism and their families face many
unique challenges, it has been our experience that they are incredibly resilient, resourceful and creative.

The parents are the true

experts on their child and
have a wealth of information
that is beneficial to the doctor.
Having a doctor who takes the
time to truly listen is essential.
A treatment approach that is rarely considered but extremely
effective is functional medicine. Beginning with a comprehensive health history and detailed physical exam, the parents and
doctor collaborate to discover the best way to help the patient. The
parents are the true experts on their child and have a wealth of
information that is beneficial to the doctor. Having a doctor who
takes the time to truly listen is essential.
When working with patients with autism it is also important to
learn about their behavior, discover how well the individual eliminates, and how well they sleep. There are a great number of details
to consider when creating a treatment plan. Each patient has his
or her own unique health picture and symptoms, and therefore
needs his or her own unique individualized treatment plan.
With a team approach consisting of the child, parents and
knowledgeable professionals, the child can experience health and
a reduction of symptoms to the greatest extent possible. An individualized treatment plan that is safe, simple and scientific will be
the most effective.

Healthy in spirit:
Changing your
life, thought by
thought
........................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

f your life is less than fulfilling, take note: You can change your
life thought by thought! No matter what the situation might
be, your attitude about it can make all the difference in the
world. You can choose how you want to be in the face of anything,
from life-threatening illness to the smallest of daily annoyances.
Yes, you can actually choose which thoughts to keep and which
to release. When thoughts come into your mind, you can ask yourself if you choose to believe them and carry them with you, or if you
want to release them and let them float away like balloons, rising
higher and higher into the sky until they completely disappear.
You can ask yourself, What will my day be like if I choose to
hold onto this thought? What will it be like to focus on it, to dwell
on it, to let it fill my day, to tell all my coworkers about it? How will
I feel at the end of the day?
If your answers to such questions point to a day of fear, depression, anxiety or resentment, you can ask yourself, What would

I rather emphasize today? Negative emotions can seem overwhelming at times, but when we realize that our emotions come
from what we think, we can begin to change what we think and
bring our emotions into better balance.
When Captain Sully Sullivan landed that airliner on the
Hudson River in 2009, he was able to contain his emotions and
focus on what he needed to do to save the passengers and crew.
The rescuers who came out to the plane commented on how calm
and orderly most of the people were. Captain Sullivan managed
his own emotions and had a very positive influence on the passengers and crew.
You may not be an airline pilot, but you have probably encountered difficult situations, such as an illness, a problem on the job
or a family conflict. The thoughts that you hold onto in those situations are extremely important.

The key to cavity

prevention: pH
in
the mouth
.................................................................................
By Linda Schuelke, RDH

cid produced by bacteria in the mouth is the cause of cavities. Bacteria in your mouth is the plaque that you brush
off your teeth and the tartar that your dental hygienist
removes from your teeth at your regular cleanings.
The pH scale goes from 1 to 14, with 1 being the most acidic, 14
being the most alkaline and 7 being neutral (like most water). A pH
of 5.5 is an important pH level for teeth, as the teeth begin to dissolve
or demineralize/break down at a pH in the mouth below 5.5.
Food and drink change the pH of saliva. Age may be a factor
also, as children have an average saliva pH of 7.5, while adults tend
to be more acidic, with a saliva pH of 6.5 or lower. There are some
products too that have low pH levels, such as Listerine (from 3.4 to
3.5 pH) and Crest (3.6 pH), but Biotene has a pH of 6.2.
An acidic mouth contains chronic excess acid in the oral cavity
resulting from frequent consumption of sugary foods or drinks
high in acid content. Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, can
also cause an increase in acid in the mouth and elevate cavity rate.
Also, some fungi found on the roots of teeth can increase crib
caries (cavities) in children.

To test the pH in your mouth you can use any pH strips that
are used to test acidic items. Wait at least two hours after eating or
drinking to ensure that the food consumed does not alter the test
results. Cleanse your mouth by filling your mouth with saliva and
then swallowing or spitting. Fill the mouth again with saliva and
place a small amount on the pH strip. The strip will change colors
based on the results.
At Dr. Twohigs dental office, we have a tooth cleaning powder that contains
baking soda, xylitol, minerals and also a mint flavor that will help raise the pH
in your mouth to a healthy level. So in your everyday brushing with the new
powder you can keep you pH at a healthy, safe level for your teeth. We will be
the first office in the north central United States to offer this tooth powder. We
have trial size bottles for under $4 or a large bottle that could last up to a year for
under $17. If you have questions please contact our office at info@drtwohig.com,
twohighygiene@gmail.com or 920-867-3101.

HEALTHY IN SPIRIT continued from page 46

If Captain Sullivan had focused on fear, disaster and the potential death of more than a hundred people, he probably would not
have been able to land safely. Negative thinking can be toxic to
you and those around you. You know this if you have ever spent
time around someone who is always negative. It can be a very
oppressive experience, and you might feel like running for the
nearest exit even on an airplane! Do you run the other way
when Negative Norm walks down the corridor at work? Have
you heard all you can tolerate from Hypochondriac Helen and
the latest illness that everyone is getting its going around, you
know! You dont have to get sucked into such conversations.
Now, consider your own thinking and your topics of conversation. Are you raising yourself and others up, or are you bringing
yourself and everybody around you down?
Of course, we all need friends who can listen to us when we are
having a problem, but we dont need to tell everybody everything.
In fact, we can limit our negative conversation and our negative
thinking by redirecting ourselves. All it takes is awareness, willingness and persistence. Give it a try!

Dry
needling 101
Your questions answered
.............................................................
By Connie Strey

ave you been thinking about trying dry needling but want
some questions answered before you schedule an appointment? Maybe you arent quite sure what dry needling is,
are confused about how it differs from acupuncture or you are
simply afraid that it will be painful. Not to worry, we are here to
give you the facts about the dry needling process.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique in which a trained physical therapist inserts small, sterile filament needles into the skin
and muscle directly at a trigger point. This generates a twitch
response, helping release muscle tension and pain. The goal is to
release or inactivate the trigger points and relieve pain.

Is dry needling the same thing as

acupuncture?

Dry needling and acupuncture, while they use the same needle
types, are two very different treatments. Dry needling is a therapeutic technique where a trained physical therapist inserts small,
sterile, solid filament needles into the skin and muscle directly at
a trigger point. The ultimate goal is to generate a twitch response
which helps release the tension and pain located in the muscles.
On the other hand, acupuncture involves the insertion of these
thin needles through the skin at strategic points of the body. It is
a key component of traditional Chinese medicine that is believed
to adjust and alter the bodys energy flow into healthier patterns.

What is a trigger point?

Trigger points consist of multiple contraction knots within

a muscle, and they can develop due to injury, dysfunction and
overuse. Active trigger points impair a persons ability to lengthen
strengthen or contract the muscle. As a result, the muscle shortens
and compresses the structure around it, causing pain.

How does dry needling work?

Pioneering studies by Dr. Jay Shah and his colleagues at the National
50

Natures Pathways | April 2015

Institutes of Health have shown that inserting a needle into trigger

points can cause favorable change that can assist in reducing
chronic pain issues. It is essential to elicit local twitch responses,
which are spinal cord reflexes. Getting local twitch responses with
dry needling is the first step in breaking the pain cycle.

What types of problems can be treated with

dry needling?

Dry needling can be used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal

issues. Muscles are thought to be a primary contributing factor to
the symptoms. Such conditions include but are not limited to neck,
back and shoulder pain; arm pain (tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, and
golfers elbow); headaches (migraines and tension-related paid);
jaw and dental pain, and buttock and leg pain (sciatica, hamstring
strains, calf tightness/spasms). The treatment of muscles has the
greatest effect on reducing pain mechanisms in the nervous system.

Are the needles sterile?

Yes, only sterile disposable needles are used.

Is dry needling painful?

The needle used in the procedure is very thin and most patients
do not feel the insertion of the needle. The local twitch response
elicits a very brief (less than a second) painful response. Some
patients describe this as a little electrical shock or a cramping
sensation. This twitch response is a positive and desirable reaction.

How long does it usually take

to notice results?

Typically, it takes from one to a few visits for a positive reaction

to take place.

Are there any side effects?

Patients may report feeling sore following the procedure. The soreness is described as muscle soreness over the area treated and into the
areas of referred symptoms. Typically, the soreness lasts a few hours.
www.naturespathways.com

The ultimate goal is to generate

a twitch response which helps
release the tension and pain
located in the muscles.
Once I am feeling better, how often do I need
to come back to maintain my progress?

Green Bay Integrative Health is

pleased to announce

The musculoskeletal system is under constant pressure from

gravity, stress, work, etc. A regular exercise program combined
with good posture can prevent many problems. If the pain comes
back, dry needling tuneups are recommended to treat and
prevent serious injuries.
Dry needling has been found to be a very effective tool for
patients diagnosed with orthopedic problems, pelvic pain, chronic
pain, headaches. If you are experiencing any of these, you may
benefit greatly from this manual therapy technique.

Osteoporosis
and physical
therapy
..................................................................
By Jill Timm, MSPT, LAT, CMTPT

pproximately 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low

bone mass. Fifty-five percent of
people over the age of 50 have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Research suggests
that approximately 1 in 2 women and up to 1
in 4 men age 50 and older will break a bone
due to osteoporosis. The National Osteoporosis Foundation reports that osteoporosis
is responsible for 2 million broken bones
and $19 billion in related costs every year.

Furthermore, experts predict that by

2025 osteoporosis will be responsible for
approximately 3 million fractures and
$25.3 billion in costs each year.
Osteoporosis is a disease of the
bone. It is a metabolic bone disease in
which the bones release the minerals that make up the rigid part of
their structure faster than they are
rebuilt. This results in a gradual loss
of bone density and weakening of
the structure of the bones in the body.
The weakened bones are more vulnerable
to injury and fracture. Osteoporosis is called
a silent disease because often the first sign
of the disorder is a fracture.
There are multiple intervention options
to slow, stop or even reverse the loss of
minerals in osteoporotic bones. The most
well-known is medication, but other
options are dietary supplements and exercises. Within the exercise portion lies the
basis for physical therapys involvement
with osteoporosis. Research shows that a
solid physical therapy program can reduce
the risk of fractures, improve posture and
stimulate bones to add minerals faster than
they release them.

Fracture risk reduction

People with osteoporosis have an increased

risk of fractures, especially of the spine.
Because of this, some positions should be
avoided as they put additional stress on the
52

Natures Pathways | April 2015

bones of the spine, increasing the risk of a

fracture. Education regarding appropriate
postures and positioning is key to avoiding
increased stress on the bones.
Falling is one of the most common
means to ending up with a bone fracture. When there is osteoporosis, the risk
of breaking a bone increases with a fall.
Therefore, physical therapy can help integrate simple balance exercise into daily
activities to improve balance and reduce
the risk of falling.

Improving posture

The body is designed to be at its maximum

efficiency in normal upright posture.
However, due to aging and bone loss,
good posture starts to head downhill.
Part of this problem is not only due to the
positions in which it is placed, but also
stemming from poor muscular control
www.naturespathways.com

of posture. Physical therapy can work

to strengthen the muscle groups to help
maintain postural balance.

Stimulate bone growth

Research shows that bone requires shock

or impact to maintain its density. The
direction of the shock or impact is also
important. Impact at the ends of the bone
with the force directed through the long
length of the bone (rather than across)
stimulates the bone to add more minerals
and increase the density of the bone. Physical therapy can again educate patients as to
appropriate activities to shock the bones
to add more minerals to their structure.

Expected outcomes with

early intervention

If physical therapy is included prior to

any structural (bony) changes, research
shows that bone density will stay the same
or increase 3 to 5 percent in a year. The
studies also show that due to correct body
mechanics good strength and improved
flexibility as educated by a physical
therapist, patients have a decreased risk of
pathologic fractures.
Even if a patient has one or more fractures and/or mild to significant postural
deviations due to osteoporosis, physical
therapy can still impact the bones of the
body. The bone density can again stay
the same or increase 3 to 5 percent in one
year. This is a great improvement from the
continued loss of bone structure.

Final thought

Overall, physical therapy is an option that

should be included in any osteoporosis
management program. While medications
and dietary supplements are very important to decrease the leaching of minerals
from the bone, physical therapy is a critical
link for movement. If a person with osteoporosis can learn to move safer and more
efficiently, osteoporosis will not have to
dictate how a person lives life.

Its spring
cleaning
time!
.................................................
By Jennifer Semrau

oes the warmer weather of April have you wanting to

spring clean your house and garage? Dont just put everything in a big black garbage bag at the curb properly
handle these materials for your personal protection and the
protection of the environment.

Documents

Going through your home office is bound to yield considerable

paper materials. Sure, you know you should recycle office papers,
but what about identify theft?
The American Forest and Paper Association advises you to
Think before you shred. Only shred documents with sensitive
information. Shredding shortens paper fibers. Recycling whole
pieces of paper keeps the fibers long, strong and ready to be made
into new paper and other products. Examples of papers that can
go right into the recycling bin without shredding include unused
return envelopes, folders, school papers (math worksheets, spelling lists, etc.), cards, books, magazines, and any other office/
school papers or mail without personally identifiable information.

54

Natures Pathways | April 2015

Items that should be shredded include employee pay stubs, bank

statements, investment transactions, preapproved credit card
applications, medical records, tax forms and any paperwork with
social security or credit card numbers.
When it is necessary to shred documents, place a paper bag
under your shredder. Once full, staple the bag shut at the top to
prevent the shreds from coming out of your bag. Loose paper
shreds are very difficult for your recycling center to capture and
process, due to their small size.
Another option often found during spring cleaning is free
shredding day. Banks, credit unions and other institutions may
offer a special day or week when customers can bring confidential
documents for free onsite shredding.

www.naturespathways.com

Electronics and appliances

Perhaps your basement cleaning has turned up a forgotten VCR,

old tube TV or a broken dehumidifier? These items actually need
to be recycled, as state law prohibits their disposal in the regular
garbage. The following items are defined as electronics and are
required to be recycled: televisions, cell phones, computers (desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets), monitors, scanners, printers
(including those which fax and scan), DVD players, VCRs, DVRs
(and any other video players), external hard drives, fax machines,
flash drives/USBs, keyboards, speakers, mice and other items that
plug into a computer. While not specifically listed in the states
recycling program, called E-Cycle Wisconsin, other similar items
such as radios or video game systems are often recycled by entities that recycle the listed electronics as well.
Many retail electronic stores accept electronics for recycling. The
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources maintains a registry of
electronics collections locations at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/Ecycle/.
Appliances are another category of materials that cannot go into
the landfill and need to be recycled. The following items are defined
as appliances: air conditioners, washers, dryers, dishwashers,
freezers, refrigerators, ovens, stoves, microwaves, water heaters,
furnaces, boilers and dehumidifiers. Many scrap metal dealers
accept appliances for recycling due to the large steel component,
and often municipalities will provide collection opportunities as
well. The above devices are considered major appliances. But similarly to electronics, items not listed, including small appliances
such as toasters or slow cookers may also be accepted for recycling.

Of course if your electronics or appliances are in good condition, consider reuse first and donate to an organization that
accepts your item!

Chemicals and hazardous materials

Did you uncover old pool chemicals, spray paint or gasoline in

cleaning your garage? Perhaps some paint thinner, varnish, weed
killers or pesticides? All of these items are considered household
hazardous materials and should be managed properly. With the
arrival of spring, many counties will begin offering Clean Sweep
programs or opening their permanent, seasonal facilities for the
acceptance of these materials. These substances can be toxic,
flammable, reactive or corrosive and should not be placed in the
regular garbage. Contact your local solid waste, health department or municipal office for upcoming Clean Sweep or household hazardous material collection days.
Jennifer Semrau is the recycling specialist for Winnebago County Solid
Waste in Oshkosh, overseeing the countys recycling, hazardous material, container rental and sales/marketing programs. She is also the former

Jane takes
her final
plans into her
own hands
Northwoods Casket
Companys mission makes
funeral preplanning
an easy decision
.............................................................

Death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time... It tells us to tell

each other right now that we love each other. Leo Buscalgia

truly enjoy telling my friends and family how much they

mean to me. I do this in a lot of ways: saying I love you
often, sending a quote that I think will build someone up or
randomly hugging them throughout the day. I never considered
preplanning my funeral to be in the category of ways to show care
to my loved ones, not to mention that thinking about death is
intimidating and a bit uneasy for me.
Im not married, not yet 30 and have no children. Im in an
in-between stage of my life. A lot of my future is undecided,
and I still hold the hint of the idea that Im invincible (the one
that everyone feels when theyre young); only now its matched
with the realities of life all around me. While I want to live a long,
healthy and fulfilled life, I know accidents happen and surprises,
both good and bad, show up when you least expect them.
My journey in taking my future into my own hands and
preplanning my funeral began at Northwoods Casket Companys
beautiful and inviting gallery in Beaver Dam. Theyre open to
giving tours, and after I was shown around the building, I understood why. The whole philosophy behind their products is that
they use sustainable materials, nothing harmful. Being able to see
the caskets in different phases drove home the idea that they are
doing things the old-fashioned way. They use lumber and craftsmen from all over the state of Wisconsin, and they plant 100 trees
for every casket they build.
56

Natures Pathways | April 2015

Old World casket in Copper

Canyon finish.

If you participate in their Plant It Forward campaign and pledge

to use a Northwoods casket, they will plant those trees the next
spring or fall. I love the idea of knowing that my choice is making
a tangible difference in Wisconsin while Im alive.
When I arrived at the gallery, I met with owner Jonas Zahn
before I met with my funeral director, and I couldnt recommend
this more. He answered questions about his own experience in
preplanning his funeral and made it feel like the most natural
decision in the world. I was very nave when it came to the logistical process, and I felt like I walked away really understanding how
the next steps would go.
I chose the Old World casket in the Copper Canyon finish. Each
casket is accompanied by a short and witty description, which made
the process more approachable and even enjoyable to me. There
was something lighthearted about it that made me feel comfortable. When I read my caskets physical description, I knew it was the
perfect fit: Simple in its construction technique, yet complex with
elegant geometry is the epitome of my everyday style. They have
something for everyone, and it doesnt just stop at caskets.
I was also shown customizable pillows and overlays, which are
pieces of fabric used to cover the bottom half of the casket. There
were a variety of patterns, including sports, fishing and flowers.
I smiled to myself knowing that there were several people in my
life who would love the Green Bay Packers theme. It warmed my
heart thinking about how important personal touches are to a
funeral, which made the meeting with my funeral director less
intimidating.
www.naturespathways.com

One thing that immediately put my mind at ease is the fact that
when you preplan your funeral, those plans arent written in stone.
Because I dont believe Im in a permanent phase of my life, I dont
know exactly where Ill end up or who may be in my life when I
pass. I was nervous about choosing a funeral home, cemetery and
even a casket. Both Jonas and my funeral director assured me that
if I change my mind about something, its perfectly natural and an
easy change. As long as my wishes are written down, my family
and friends will know whats truly important to me when it comes
to my end-of-life plans.
I realized during this process how important it is to me to help
my loved ones as much as I can when I pass away, and preplanning my funeral was the perfect step to show them how much I
care about them even after Im gone.

Very
Low-Carb
Cheesecake
..........................................................
By Rosalie Misco (Grandma Rose)

arbohydrates arent only the major cause of weight gain,

they can also cause blood sugar problems leading to
diabetes. Fats on the other hand do not cause weight gain,
as half of the calories in fat are needed to digest it. So the calories
in fat and carbohydrates are pretty close to equal.
Carbohydrates can be addicting. Resistant starch fiber can help
keep us feeling full and help overcome a carbohydrate addiction.
To help with weight loss and blood sugar control, I have modified
this cheesecake recipe. It is very low in carbs and contains resistant starch fiber.
When you feel a carb attack coming on have a piece of this
cheesecake. You do not need to feel guilty having this sweet
treat.

Crust

cup pecans or walnuts

2 tablespoons butter

Grind nuts and butter in food processor. Pat nuts and butter into
the bottom of an 8-by-8-inch pan.

Filling

3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
cup Hi-Maize 260 Resistant Starch Fiber
cup Splenda
Two 8-ounce packages of full-fat cream cheese

Place filling ingredients in food processor. Blend until smooth

and then pour over nut crust
Bake at 350 until set and slightly golden.
www.naturespathways.com

Topping

cup Splenda
cup frozen berries of choice
Cornstarch (small amount, as needed)
Water (small amount, as needed)

Place Splenda and berries in saucepan. Heat on low until juice

forms, then thicken with a little cornstarch and water. Cook until
desired thickness.
Spread berry topping over cheesecake.
Refrigerate and enjoy without guilt even if you are diabetic.
No need to count calories or carbs with this recipe!
Hi-Maize 260 Resistant Starch Fiber is available at Natural Expressions 100%
Whole Bakery, located at 825 E. Broadway Drive, Appleton. Store hours are
11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Visit the bakerys website at

Fenugreek
Trigonella
foenum-graecum

he first recorded use of fenugreek is described on an

ancient Egyptian papyrus dated to 1500 B.C. Fenugreek
seed is commonly used in cooking. Historically, fenugreek
was used for a variety of health conditions, including menopausal
symptoms and digestive problems. It was also used for inducing
childbirth.

Natures Pathways | April 2015

Today, fenugreek is used as a folk or traditional remedy for

diabetes and loss of appetite, and to stimulate milk production in breastfeeding women. It is also applied to the skin for
inflammation.
The dried seeds are ground and taken by mouth or used to form
a paste that is applied to the skin.

What the science says

A few small studies have found that fenugreek may help lower
blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
According to the National Center for Complementary and
Integrative Health (NCCIH), though, there is not enough scientific evidence to support the use of fenugreek for any other health
condition.

Side effects and cautions

Possible side effects of fenugreek when taken by mouth include

gas, bloating and diarrhea. Fenugreek can cause irritation when
applied to the skin.
Important note: Given its historical use for inducing childbirth, women should use caution when taking fenugreek during
pregnancy.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary
health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do
to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe
care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about
complementary and integrative health approaches, see NCCIHs
Time to Talk campaign.

he farm-to-table concept emphasizes

simply prepared food made of locally
sourced, seasonal ingredients. Appleton Downtown, Inc. (ADI) has embraced and
expanded on the idea by inserting the market
into the equation. ADIs year-round Farm
Market brings seasonal fruits and vegetables,
fresh meats and cheeses, breads and baked
goods, and other artisan foods to local
forks.
As the farm-to-table trend spreads,
communities are seeing the benefits
both nutritional and environmental of buying and eating
locally. By purchasing locally harvested food selections, chefs and
consumers:
Improve the financial well-being of small and local farms
Maintain foods natural health and nutritive characteristics
Reduce the environmental impact and carbon footprint of
transporting food
Add to the local economy
The farm-to-table movement encourages quality and simplicity
over ease and accessability.
The Downtown Appleton Farm Market is one of the largest in
the state of Wisconsin and regularly sees more than 10,000 people
on any given Saturday during the summer, according to ADIs
Event & Planning Coordinator Djuanna Hugdahl.
With more people seeking to eat healthier and focus on whats
good for the environment, the Downtown Appleton Farm Market
is expanding to accommodate the demand for locally produced
foods. Hugdahl attributes this growth to customers wanting to
know where their food is coming from, understanding the process
of how its created and desiring variety. Once only a summer
mainstay, the Downtown Appleton Farm Market has grown
to a year-round event and in 2014 added a smaller Wednesday

summer afternoon Farm Market.

Eating from farm to fork is an investment
in more than ones health; its an investment
in ones community. Farm markets not only
provide an opportunity to purchase locally
grown produce, but also give people the
chance to connect with others in their community. Essentially, buying locally produced goods
is an experience that promotes a sense of
place, a feeling that ADI works hard to
instill as one great place.
This past fall, Appleton was honored
by The American Planning Association with a peoples choice
award naming College Avenue as one of the Great Places in
America in 2014. The Downtown Appleton Farm market is part of
what makes Appleton great and helps to create that sense of place.
The Downtown Appleton Farm Market not only brings food
from farm to market to table, it inspires people to create new
relationships, share resources, enjoy food at its freshest and most
flavorful, and socialize in one great place!
The Appleton Downtown website (www.appletondowntown.
org) has details on all Downtown events, listings of businesses,
and specials and coupons. Be sure to like the Appleton Downtown and Downtown Appleton Facebook pages and follow ADI
