My Music Magazine

Presentation
Nicola Bound
Genre/Subgenre
• The genre I have chosen to base my magazine around is
‘Alternative rock’. This is a genre of music which emerged in the
1980’s and become widely popular in the 1990’s. Alternative
rock consists of various subgenres that emerged from the
independent music scene from the 1980’s, such as grunge,
Britpop, gothic rock and indie pop.
• This genre of music is very popular in today’s music industry,
from huge bands owning the billboards such as Oasis and The
Killers. With this in mind, I feel there would be a large audience
for this genre of magazine.
• I have chosen this genre of music as it appeals to me
personally, therefore I would have greater interest and
knowledge over this genre than others.
Audience
• The general audience for my magazine would be
those interested in this style of music. Therefore, it
would be expected that they enjoyed listening to
electric and bass guitars, drums and vocals.
• The target audience would be aged be from
teenagers aged 14 and onwards. However, I do not
feel that it would appeal to those above 30.
• I feel my magazine would appeal to both genders, as
I consider it a genre that does not target a particular
sex but appeals anyone of age band 14 – mid 20’s.
Name of Magazine
• The title I have chosen for my magazine is
‘Alt-Wave’. I have chosen this as the words are
representative of the genre of music. ‘Alt’ is short
for ‘alternative’ and represents the genre of
Alternative rock, and the title ‘Alt-Wave’ represents
the way in which music has developed over the
years; rapidly developing into genres such as punk
rock, glam metal, Britpop, indie rock and pop punk.
‘Wave’ also associates with the idea of a ‘sound
wave’, which relates to music.
Tagline
• After considering several taglines for my
magazine, I settled on: ‘Let music
immerse you’. I chose this as it fitted well
with the name of my magazine being ‘Alt-
Wave’, as the use of the word ‘immerse’
works well with the idea of a ‘wave’ of
water, as if the person if submerging
themselves with music like water.
• My magazine’s heading would therefore
appear like:

Alt-Wave
Let music immerse you
USP – Unique Selling Point
• My magazine would include other aspects that I feel
readers would like to see included, such as fashion
that relates to this style of music. In relation to
fashion, I feel including a section on clothing that I
feel would appeal to this genre of music would be
relevant, such as the ‘chic rock’ look.
• Not only would my magazine focus on popular
artists of the 21st century, but it would reminisce
over the much loved rock artists of the 80’s and
90’s that once had control over the music charts.
• It would also make room for fresh talent that is
unheard of.
Editorial Mission
Statement
• My music magazine will focus on artists
of this genre of music, and inform the
readers of gigs, festivals and gossip of
these music artists. I would like to follow
a similar style magazine to that of
‘Kerrang!’ and ‘Q’ magazine, however
focusing on rock music through the
ages. The magazine will also include
articles on the latest CD and DVD
releases that supplement the
Alternative rock audience.
Reader Profile
• Readers of ‘Alt-Wave’ are males and
females between the ages of 14 and
mid 20’s, who are dedicated fans to
the genre of Rock music in general,
and have a passion for heavy beats.
They are not afraid to listen to their
music turned up loud, and would be
interested in aspects of life that
follow on from loving this style of
music; such as fashion and culture.
Ideas: Double Page Article
• It would focus on how music has
changed over the 80’s, 90’s and 21st
century. It would be displayed
chronologically and run through the
best artists which roamed the charts
for the longest.
