Question 2
Charlotte Ysabel Connolly-Hayes
 How does your media
product represent
particular social
groups?
Due to the fact the audience for a
classic rock magazine are generally
white men aged 30 and above who
are middle class, the magazine
contains an older white male as the
cover image, something which is a
generic convention of classic rock
magazine used as the readers ‘ideal
self’; the kind of person they aspire
to be.

I have also used very simple

colours as bright colours and covers
in particular which contain lots of
colour and pictures represent a
much younger audience as well as
the younger band members which
are displayed on the cover.
 My product also contains references
to bands from the 70s and 80s which
represents an older age group; all of
the bands are all white males which
represents the classic rock social
group and audience for my product.
For example: Pistols ‘n’ Daisies is an
obvious reference to Guns ‘n’ Roses
as well as the list of bands on the
contents page such as Aerosmith and
Journey. The bands are almost
representative of the target audience;
white males aged 30 and above are
fans of music created by white males
who are 30 and older. The classic
rock scene is dominated by older
men. This means that the people
featured in classic rock magazines
are people who these 30 year old
middle class men aspire to be due to
the fact they are of a similar age and
perhaps have a similar appearance
and style.
Kerrang
The text in the double page spread contains
no
vulgar language because it is an aspect of
music magazine products that appeals to a
younger audience, taboo language can be
found inside magazines such as Kerrang! And
this appeals to the teenage market.

The use of simple fonts and a fairly large

amount of writing and few images represents
an adult market as they are more inclined to
read than to look at pictures. The images on
the contents page and double page spread are
very representative of a classic rock social
group because of the hair and the clothes they
Lead Balloon
are wearing. Leather jackets, torn jeans and
anything black are the type of clothes that this
classic rock social group wear at any age but
particularly the older crowd. The guitars also
imply the type of people who are most likely to
read this magazine and listen to this type of
music, it is clearly a rock crowd as perhaps in
a pop magazine the props used would be
microphones and in a dance magazine; DJ
