Music Magazine Comparison.

In a magazine, the cover is the first thing you see and is what will cause
you to purchase or read the text in the first place. This music magazine
represents the genre of punk rock. The central image and page layout are
designed to make it feel unstructured and messy almost like a rock
concert, the use of red and black shows a loud and rebellious tone. In the
left image above, we see the title “Kerrang” written in large white text so
the audience knows who it is. Furthermore, the cracked effect on the text
makes it seems more loud and serious hinting to its rock punk theme.
The central image of Jared Leto helps a different minority takes an
interest as he is an actor and a singer-songwriter, this expressed in the
caption reading “Jared Leto’s dark side exposed”. This page also has
other artists on the left and right for others who may ‘not like Leto or be
interested in him. The right image of the magazine similarly shows a
dark and toned-down setting with the black background and yellow text,
allowing the same theme of rock punk to continue. The photo of the band
members on the right page seem very mellow and happy not serious and
brooding like Leto. The quote ‘They don’t listen to metal, they’re not
angry’’ intercepts the idea of the standard metal artist qualities as they
are also influenced by a rock band. The theme of instructed rock and
punk has continued as the text is only yellow and white to stand out and
be dynamic, as even the photograph itself is shifted slightly instead of
being ordered. The article talks about them and how they are different to
the rest of their music industry they work in. The magazine seems to be
tailored to individuals between 14-20 years old as it is more common
with the younger generations to know these musicians. Furthermore, the
photo shows a lighter and more diverse approach to the genre, despite
still wearing dark colours they appeal to other fans.
Whereas in Billboard, the music magazine represents hip hop/pop
music. The central image and page layout left are designed to be very
simplistic and in order like their music which is softer, unlike Kerrang.
In the left image below, we see the title “Billboard” written in black
letters with colours on the inside. Suggesting a lighter and effervescent
tone than Kerrang, the central image is Beyoncé who is a world famous
singer and songwriter who has a wide audience which will cause more
people to buy or interested in the magazine. The caption under her name
may give insight onto her life and her future goals of her career. The
right image of the magazine shows another hip hop artist in Ariana
Grande, she is in the middle of the page surrounded by pictures and text.
The use of plain black text and a grey background makes it feel stylish
and down to earth as she talks about how she progressed into a singer,
from her acting career. In addition to this, the pictures of her acting
career shows who she was, in personality and maturity. The magazine is
targeted for an older audience as Billboard normally has a 47-year-old
audience but a younger audience can also be interested due to these
singers being heavily followed on social media platforms. Also her music
might ‘not match the interest or tastes of them personally.
