1. Distinguish the important characteristics of instrument that are totally electrical


and totally electronic in nature. [16]

2.a) Explain in detail with suitable diagrams the pulse time modulation and pulse code
modulation techniques.
b) Write the merits of the above techniques. [12+4]

3.a) How does the sampling oscilloscope increase the apparent frequency response of
an oscilloscope.
b) The voltage ‘E1’ is applied to the horizontal input and ‘E2’ to the vertical input of
a CRO. E1 and E2 have same frequency. The trace on the screen is an ellipse. The
solar of major axis is negative. The maximum vertical value is 3 divisions and the
point where the ellipse crosses the vertical axis is 2.6 divisions. The ellipse is
symmetrical about the horizontal and vertical axis. Determine the possible phase
angle E2 with respect to E1 [8+8]

4.a) Explain the principle and working of true RMS voltmeter with a block diagram.
b) What are the difference between peak reading and RMS voltmeters? [10+6]

5a) A resistive position transducer with a resistance of 5kΩ and shaft stroke of 8cm is
applied with a voltage of 5V. When the wiper is 3cm from the reference, what is
the value of output voltage?
b) A resistance strain gauge with a gauge factor 2.04 is fastened to a beam which is
subjected to a strain of 1 x 10-6. If the original resistance of the gauge is 120Ω
calculate the change in resistance. [8+8]

6. Define wave analyzer. Explain in detail with necessary diagrams the different
types of wave analyzer. [16]

7.a) Explain the construction of different types of strain gauges with gauges with neat
sketches.
b) Explain the gauge sensitivity in case of a strain gauge. Derive an expression for
the output voltage of a Wheatstone bridge when one of the arms is a strain gauge.

8.a) Mention the various types of instruments used for temperature measurement.
b) Describe the temperature measurement with resistance thermometer. [4+12]
