‘Kameny Way’ ceremony highlights Capital Pride events

A two-block section of 17th
Street, N.W., in the heart of one of
the city’s most visible gay neigh-
borhoods was to be renamed this
week as “Frank Kameny Way” in
honor of the veteran gay activist
credited with founding the city’s
LGBT civil rights movement.
D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty was
scheduled to preside over a cer-
emony and the installation of a
new street sign Thursday to offi-
cially put in place the Frank
Kameny Way street designation.
The ceremony was to be
part of a long list of events
associated with Capital Pride,
the city’s annual LGBT commu-
nity celebration.
The Dupont Circle Advisory
Neighborhood Commission, which
has jurisdiction over the 17th
Street strip near Dupont Circle, ini-
tiated the Kameny street designa-
tion earlier this year.
According to ANC Commissioner
Mike Silverstein, the commission
voted unanimously to ask the city
to designate as Frank Kameny
Way a section of 17th Street
between P and R streets, N.W.
“We — and everybody else
we talked to — thought this was
long overdue,” Silverstein said.

authorities discovered he was
gay. He founded the Mattachine
Society of Washington in the
early 1960s, the city’s first LGBT
group. He is credited with playing
a leading role in shaping the
local and national LGBT rights
movement for the next 40 years.

gration rights to foreign-born same-
sex partners of American citizens.
In a separate unanimous vote,
the Council also approved a
“sense of the Council” resolution
asking the U.S. Food & Drug
Administration to end its 28-year-
old policy banning blood dona-
tions by any man who has had
sex with another man.

the Council signed on as co-
introducers to the immigration
resolution, which endorses the
Uniting American Families Act, a
bill pending in Congress.

Mason said a crowd of about
200,000 people is expected for
Sunday’s annual Capital Pride
Festival, set to take place on
Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.,
between Third and Seventh streets.
Similar to past years, close to
250 booths and vendors’ stands
are expected to be at the festival,
with dozens of LGBT and LGBT-
those of same-sex gay and lesbian
partners,” says the immigration res-
olution. “Current U.S. immigration
law discriminates against a U.S.
citizen or lawful permanent resi-
dent and his or her foreign-born
partner of the same sex by not
allowing the sponsorship of a for-
eign partner for immigration bene-
fits, although opposite-sex couples
would have the right do so.
“It is the sense of the Council
that the passage of the Uniting
American Families Act or other law
that will end discrimination for bi-
national same-sex partners under
the immigration laws and will allow
gay and lesbian residents of the
District of Columbia fair and equal
access to immigration benefits
through their permanent partner-
ships will have a significant posi-
tive impact on the District of
Columbia and should be enacted.”
The second resolution calls on
the Food & Drug Administration to
use “science-based” eligibility cri-
supportive groups and business-
es displaying their products or
advancing their causes.
Steven Taubenkibel, a spokesper-
son for the Metro subway and bus
system, said Metro is aware of the
crowds expected for Capital Pride
events over the weekend. He
noted that officials were prepared
to add more train cars beyond the
normal weekend schedules if larg-
er crowds and a higher ridership
warrant the additions.
He said long-scheduled track
repair projects would cause delays at
the East and West Falls Church and
the New York Avenue stations.
Mason said that in addition to
entertainers scheduled to perform
on the festival’s main stage at
Third Street, near the U.S. Capitol,
several speakers, including elect-
ed officials, were expected to
address the crowd from the stage.
Among those confirmed earli-
er this week to speak were D.C.
City Council Chair and mayoral
candidate Vincent Gray and the
director of the Mayor’s Office of
GLBT Affairs Christopher Dyer.
Mason said the mayor’s office
had yet to confirm whether Fenty
would speak at the festival. The
mayor was scheduled to march
in the parade.

Holmes Norton; representatives of
American Veterans for Equal
Rights, who were to be accompa-
nied by the playing of taps in honor
of fallen service members; and
Miss D.C. Jen Corey.

HIV tests or HIV treatments, and
little was known about HIV and
AIDS, the FDA imposed a life-
time deferment, or permanent
ban, on blood donation by any
man who has had sex with
another man at any time since
1977,” says the resolution.
It says the permanent ban on
nearly all gay men from donating
blood unnecessarily reduces the
U.S. supply of blood.
“It is the sense of the Council of
the District of Columbia that the
United States Food & Drug
Administration should reverse the
lifetime deferment of blood dona-
tions by men who have sex with
men since 1977 in favor of a poli-
cy that protects the safety and
integrity of the blood supply that is
based on an up-to-date scientific
criteria,” says the resolution.

Liquor board suspends Ziegfeld’s/Secrets license
Activists, customers
denounce sex-related
charges as unfair, ‘silly’

The D.C. Alcoholic Beverage
Control Board has voted to sus-
pend the liquor license of gay
nightclub Ziegfeld’s/Secrets for
five days based on allegations
that the club permitted its nude
dancers to engage in “sexual
conduct” prohibited under the
city’s liquor law.
The suspension is scheduled for
June 16-20, and will result in the clos-
ing of the club during that period.
A spokesperson for the
Alcoholic Beverage Regulation
Administration, of which the ABC
Board is a part, said the unani-
mous May 26 suspension vote
was also based on charges that
Ziegfeld’s/Secrets management
failed to put in place sufficient
security measures to prevent
four separate “altercations” in
which patrons became involved
in minor scuffles inside the club.
Another charge that ABC Board
inspectors saw customers consum-
ing beer 13 minutes after the
required 2 a.m. closing time became
yet another ground for the suspen-
sion, said the spokesperson.
An ABC Board report about
the after-hours drinking allega-
tion says the management dis-
puted the allegation.
“We wish to express our sin-
cerest regret to our community,
customers and staff,” says a
statement the club’s manage-
ment released Monday.
“We strive to operate under
strict compliance with the ABC
Board policies and requirements
and to provide a safe and enjoy-
able environment for everyone
who enters our establishment,” it
says. “However, sometimes things
happen that we or anyone is
unable to control, and for this — or
for some other reason — we have
been issued this penalty.”
Cynthia Simms, the ABRA
spokesperson, said that Ziegfeld’s/
Secrets and the board reached an
agreement in which the board did
not file as many charges as it could
have against the club and the club
agreed not to contest the charges
at a full hearing.
Simms said the board’s deci-
sion includes a $4,000 fine
against the club and a 20-day
license suspension, with 15 days
of the license suspension stayed.

charge against the club, says
she observed “five to six nude
male performers standing on
individual pedestals, each per-
forming a sexual act on them-
selves (masturbation).”
Her report includes a photo she
took of one dancer, showing him
with his hand gripping his penis.
The dark, blurred photo accompa-
nying the report captures the
dancer from the shoulders down
and does not show his face.
Dantzler’s report says she
also saw “patrons, fully clothed,
gratifying the performers by rub-
bing and massaging the per-
formers about the body (not gen-
ital area) and the performers did
the same to the patrons.”
Ziegfeld’s/Secrets owner
Allen Carroll has said the club
strictly prohibits any sexual activ-
ity by dancers or customers.
The incidents involving the
alleged altercations and after-
hours drinking took place in
February and March of 2009 dur-
ing the first few weeks after
Ziegfeld’s/Secrets reopened at
1824 Half St., S.W. The reopen-
ing came three years after the
city displaced the club from its
home of more than 30 years on
O Street, S.E., to allow construc-
tion of the Washington Nationals
baseball stadium.
Ziegfeld’s/Secrets was the only
one of several gay bars and night-
clubs displaced by the stadium to
find a new location in which to
reopen. Strict zoning laws that bar
adult entertainment have prevent-
ed the other clubs from finding a
new home, a development that
has prompted some of the cus-
tomers to criticize city officials for
not taking a greater role in helping
the clubs relocate.
Two regular customers of
Ziegfeld’s/Secrets, who spoke on
condition that their names be with-
held, said the management and
employees made it clear that the

club prohibited sexual acts of any
kind by the performers and strictly
banned improper touching between
performers and customers.
The two customers said the inci-
dents in question appeared to have
occurred during the first few weeks
the club was open, and that large
crowds and “some confusion” during
the opening weeks may have tem-
porarily distracted staff attention.
“It’s incredibly unfair to blame the
club for activity that violates their
own rules and which they try to pre-
vent,” said one of the customers.
Veteran D.C. gay activist
Frank Kameny agreed with that
assessment, noting that he was
“outraged” over what he called a
“Victorian-era” campaign by the
ABC Board to crack down on
entertainment performed by and
for consenting adults.
“It’s about time we got off the
anti-sex crusade here,” he said.
When told that ABRA officials
said they are required to enforce
existing liquor law restrictions
against sexual conduct within
licensed establishments, Kameny
and other activists called for
repealing those laws.
Gay activist Tom DePriest, a
retired attorney for the federal gov-
ernment and a Ziegfeld’s/Secrets
customer, said he strongly object-
ed to the ABC Board’s apparent
assumption that customers and
dancers of clubs offering nude
entertainment “need protecting” by
the ABC Board.
“It’s part of some sort of sex-
phobic moral code enforcement
that is determined by people who
don’t enjoy these clubs,” he said.
“If adults want to get together
and have nude entertainment,
then why is it anybody else’s
business, especially people who
aren’t there for that?”
Three of the reports by ABRA
inspectors outline incidents they
observed at Ziegfeld’s/Secrets
during their visits there in
February and March of 2009. The
case reports became the basis of
the ABC Board’s charges against
the club, according to Simms.
The first incident occurred
Feb. 15, 2009, two days after the
club opened in its newly renovat-
ed warehouse building on Half
Street, S.W.
According to the ABC Board
report for that incident, a male cus-
tomer was punched in the nose by
another male customer as he
walked out of the men’s restroom
in what the victim and witnesses
said was an unprovoked assault.
The report says the attacker, who
appeared intoxicated, later told
police he punched the victim
because the victim resembled a
person who had bullied him while
he was in elementary school.
Paramedics who responded to
the scene treated the victim, who
declined an offer of transportation
to a hospital, the report says.
The assailant was arrested on a
charge of simple assault, and the
ABC Board charged Ziegfeld’s/
Secrets with harboring a “physical
altercation” that involved “misuse of
licensed premises,” although the
report quotes the victim as saying
there was “no way” the club could
have prevented a spontaneous
assault like that from happening.
One day later, on Feb. 16,
2009, another assault occurred
when two women who met in the
club that night and became “inti-
mate” with each other got into a
fight, with one grabbing the other
in a headlock and shoving her
head into a wall, according to the
report for that incident. Police
who were stationed outside the
club arrested both women after
the club’s staff broke up the fight,
the report says. Neither of the
women was seriously injured.
That incident happened min-
utes before ABC Board Inspector
Susan Mitchell said she
observed two customers drink-
ing beer at 2:13 a.m., following
the required 2 a.m. closing time
after which consumption of alco-
hol is prohibited, according to the
board’s report of the incident.
Another incident cited by the
board occurred March 6, 2009,
when a customer described as
intoxicated attempted to grab the
penis of one of the dancers per-
forming on a platform, according to
an ABC Board report. The report
says the dancer swatted the man’s
hand away several times before the
customer succeeded in touching
the dancer’s penis. The dancer
immediately alerted management,
and a bartender and the manager
escorted the customer out of the
bar, the report says.
While being escorted out of the
club, the customer shoved the bar-
tender and later shoved him again
outside the club. D.C. Police Lt.
Brett Parson, the former head of
the Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit,
was standing nearby and arrested
the customer on a charge of sim-
ple assault, the report says.
The ABC Board, at the recom-
mendation of Inspector Susan
Mitchell, charged Ziegfeld’s/Secrets
with two counts of “physical alterca-
tion” on its premises in connection
with the incident.
Another ABC Board report says
the “sexual conduct” incidents
occurred Nov. 19, 2009. The report
says two inspectors, including
Danzler, visited the club that night “to
investigate a complaint regarding
employees engaged in sexual acts.”
The report does not disclose
who made the complaint.
“In some situations, individuals
that file a complaint with ABRA
regarding an establishment request
to be anonymous,” said Simms.
“Since there is no mention of a
name in the case report, I can
assume that this is what happened.”
Simms said she inquired about
the photo of the dancer in the case
report and confirmed that Danzler
took it with her cell phone.
The statement issued by
Ziegfeld’s/Secrets doesn’t dis-
cuss the individual charges filed
against the club.
“We’ve served our gay commu-
nity for over 40 years without infrac-
tions with the ABC Board,” it says.
“We were forced out of business for
three years due to the city invoking
eminent domain to take posses-
sion of our former home to make
way for the construction of the
Washington Nationals Stadium.
“After our three-year fight to
reopen, which included a difficult
search for a new building, we have
been subjected to the utmost
scrutiny from the ABC Board. Now
we have been forced to close for
the above stated period of time.”
The statement says that the
situation is not a “punishment,”
but instead an “injustice.”
Rick Rosendall, a local gay
activist, called the ABC Board inves-
tigation and enforcement against the
club a waste of tax dollars.
“If we have money to pay a sin-
gle person to spend a single hour
in those kinds of places looking for
things to be shocked about, then
we should abolish all of those jobs
because this is completely silly
from beginning to end,” he said.
Among the members of the
seven-person ABC Board that
voted for the club’s license sus-
pension was gay member Mike
Silverstein, who is a member of
the Dupont Circle Advisory
Neighborhood Commission.

Barbara Lynn Foraker, 51
Barbara Lynn Foraker died of cancer June 6 at
her cottage in Earleville, Md. Foraker, who was
commonly known as “Lynn,” was 51.
Foraker was a graduate of William Penn High
School in New Castle, Del., and attended the
University of Delaware, where she was a member of
the varsity basketball and softball teams. She graduat-
ed from the school in 1981 with a degree in political
science and economics. She went on to earn a degree
from Goldey-Beacom Business College in 1982.
She sold commercial and residential real estate in
Washington, D.C., then returned to Delaware to join
the family business Foraker Oil, which she owned and
operated when she died.
Foraker enjoyed boating on the Bohemia River
and Chesapeake Bay, and took longer voyages along the Atlantic Coast. She was
commodore of the Bay Ladies Fleet Yacht Club, and owned The Beach House Bar &
Restaurant in Rehoboth, Del. She had a lifelong love of dogs.
Survivors include her partner, Susanne Salkind, and daughter, Helen Abigail
Salkind-Foraker of New Castle, Del.; her parents, Warner Foraker and Barbara Gail
Foraker of Earleville, Md.; her brother, Warner Foraker, Jr. of St Augustine, Fla.; a niece
and nephew along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service was held Thursday. Memorials can be made to the American
Cancer Society or the Delaware Humane Society.

Charles Tarver IV, 53

Charles Tarver IV died of HIV complications May
30 at Georgetown University Hospital, according to
his partner, Albert Dauphin. Tarver was 53.
Tarver was a graduate of William McKinley High
School in Canton, Ohio, and attended The Ohio State
University, where he was a member of Phi Beta
Sigma, a black fraternity. He graduated from the
school in 1984 with a degree in communications.
Before coming to Washington, D.C., in 1992,
Tarver taught communications at Emerson College
in Boston and was a debate team coach and judge.
He also started Brother to Brother, which Dauphin
described as one of the first workshops for black
men “who were HIV positive.” Dauphin said Tarver
founded a similar workshop in Washington.
In Washington, Tarver briefly performed government work before joining the Human
Rights Campaign as its first black gay lobbyist. Dauphin said Tarver went on to serve
as executive director of D.C. Black Pride in 1995 and become a founding member of
what was then known as the D.C. Inner Light Unity Fellowship Church. Tarver became
one of the church’s first deacons in 1996.
Dauphin said Tarver was first hospitalized in 1998, but recovered and “continued
his activism and church obligation.” Despite several ensuing hospitalizations,
Dauphin said Tarver kept his “optimism and love of God.” The couple had planned
to wed this summer.
Survivors include Tarver’s brother, Frank Smith of Warren, Mich., and sister,
Pensacola Miller of Detroit, Mich.; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Unity Fellowship Church’s celebration of life service for Tarver is set for 11 a.m.
Saturday at Luther Place Memorial Church, 1256 Vermont Ave., N.W., in Washington.

Gay man loses Va. congressional bid
A gay Republican running for Congress in Northern Virginia narrowly lost his bid
Tuesday for the GOP nomination in the race.
Matthew Berry, who’s gay and an attorney for the Federal Communications
Commission, was seeking the Republican nomination to represent Virginia’s 8th con-
gressional district, which includes Arlington and Alexandria.
Berry lost to Patrick Murray, an Iraq war veteran who took nearly 52 percent of the
vote in a race where nearly 14,000 ballots were cast. Murray is set to face Democratic
incumbent Rep. Jim Moran in November.
After conceding the race, Berry told the Blade he was “disappointed” that he had insufficient
votes to win the nomination, but said he felt he ran “a very honorable and good campaign.”
Berry said he felt his views on LGBT issues — as well as other positions — were
mischaracterized by Murray prior to the election.
In an e-mail blast sent Monday, Berry noted that he believes each state should
determine its own laws with regard to same-sex marriage. He also said he opposes
changing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” before the Pentagon completes its study on the issue.

In a statement released the day
of the vote, Webb said he was wait-
ing for the completion of a
Department of Defense review on
the matter and cited a May 24 White
House letter and chiefs of all four mil-
itary branches who concur that the
study should be completed before
Congress takes legislative action.

process,” he said in the statement.
But several gay activists in
Virginia and beyond who are fol-
lowing the repeal effort didn’t buy
Webb’s explanation. Others said
they weren’t surprised by the
vote, yet found it disappointing.
“This is not totally unexpect-
ed,” said Del. Adam Ebbin (D-
Va.), the only openly gay mem-
ber of the Virginia General
Assembly. “When Sen. Webb
was a candidate, he was candid
in that he at that time said he did
not support repealing ‘Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell.’ I suppose that his stat-
ed willingness to look at the
reports demonstrates a small bit
of progress, but when conserva-
tive Democrats vote to repeal the
policy and move forward, it is
extremely disappointing that
Sen. Webb did not join them.”
Webb has supported other
gay rights legislation. He voted
for the Matthew Shepard &
James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes
Prevention Act, which Congress
passed last year; he’s signed on
as a co-sponsor of the
Employment Non-Discrimination
Act; and he opposes Virginia’s
Marshall-Newman amendment,
which bans same-sex marriage.
He also made an appearance at
a gay fundraiser in Arlington by
Virginia Partisans when he was
running for his Senate seat.
Several observers said there
are enough provisions in the leg-
islation regarding implementa-
tion that Webb’s concerns were
unwarranted.
“We were disappointed with the
senator’s vote because we felt the
provision addressed all of the possi-
ble procedural issues,” said Claire
Gastanaga, general counsel for
Equality Virginia. “The way this is
structured, the vote wasn’t on the
process. This was just putting
Congress on record that they sup-
port the decision. To cite the process
is misplaced at this juncture.”
Virginia Partisans members
are planning a letter to Webb to
express their disappointment.
“This is legalized discrimina-
tion,” said Terry Mansberger, the
group’s president. “This is a stall
tactic. They’ve built into the legisla-
tion enough of a timetable to
implement the repeal, but Webb is
insisting on even longer time and
more study. We don’t know what’s
going to happen in Congress in
November. We have the majority
now and a supportive president.
It’s time to move and not blow a
golden opportunity. We can’t wait.”
The Human Rights Campaign
and Servicemembers Legal Defense
Network denounced Webb’s vote.
“There were many lawmakers
who stood on the right side of his-
tory, but Sen. Webb disappoint-
ingly voted to maintain the kind of
discrimination that hurts our
national security,” said Michael
Cole, an HRC spokesperson. “If
you are interested in giving the
military the tools they need to
allow for open service, then the
right vote would have been to
repeal the law now with imple-
mentation pending the review.”
And SLDN Executive Director
Aubrey Sarvis said the White
House letter Webb cited is not an
acceptable explanation because
the legislation stipulates that no
repeal action will occur before the
Pentagon’s recommendations are
reviewed by the House and Senate
Armed Services committees.
“We are terribly disappointed in
the senator’s vote,” Sarvis said in
an e-mail. “He wrapped himself up
in the procedure and failed to
stand up and do the right thing.”

Obama earns mixed reviews on LGBT progress

President Obama. Hailed as a
champion of LGBT rights during the
2008 campaign, LGBT rights advo-
cates now give Obama mixed
reviews for his performance to date.
In a statement to the Blade, Joe

Human Rights Campaign, said
“there’s no doubt” that Obama has
done more for LGBT people than
any other U.S. president in history.
“Within the constraints of cur-
rent law, he’s advanced policies
that will vastly improve the lives of

Critic says Obama’s tenure

Another item that Obama mentioned in
the letter is repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t
Tell.” Late last month, Congress voted in
favor of a compromise measure that would
end the law after the Pentagon completes
its study on the issue at the end of the year.
Alex Nicholson, executive director of
Servicemembers United, said the White
House’s endorsement of the compromise
the week that Congress voted on it was
helpful in finding the votes needed to
advance the measure.
“The fact that the White House was willing
to come out and publicly support a repeal
plan and get the Pentagon to do the same
was a critical element in getting that passed in
the Senate Armed Services Committee,”
Nicholson said.
Still, Nicholson said he didn’t know how
involved Obama was in lobbying members
of the House and Senate directly to vote in
favor of repeal once the deal was reached.
Also in the letter, Obama pledged to work to
address HIV/AIDS, arguing that “we do not
have to choose between values and science”
in working to fight the epidemic.
“While abstinence education should be
part of any strategy, we also need to use
common sense,” he wrote. “We should
have age appropriate sex education that
includes information about contraception.”
Carl Schmid, deputy executive director of
the AIDS Institute, said he had mixed feelings
about Obama’s track record on the matter.
“There have been a lot of positives, but
there still needs to be greater attention in
response and resources,” he said.
Schmid said Obama has followed through
on his plans to confront HIV/AIDS through sci-
entific means and has set out to eliminate
“abstinence-only” sex education programs
through the budget process.
But Schmid noted the abstinence-only
sex education programs were reinstated by
amendment in the passage of the health
care reform legislation.
“It’s not in the appropriations bill, but
it’s in the managerial program now, just
like it was in the past,” he said.
Schmid cited the reauthorization of the
Ryan White Care Act as an accomplishment
regarding HIV/AIDS, as well as passage of
health care reform legislation, which he
called a “huge, huge, huge accomplishment.”
He said the White House was of limit-
ed help, though, in pushing to renew
funding under the Ryan White Care Act.
“The administration was very slow in get-
ting their principle and positions out on getting
the Ryan White reauthorized,” he said. “They
didn’t speak out and early enough. Ryan
White is up for renewal in 2013 — right before
all this health care reform kicks in. We’re going
to need the administration’s support for the
continuation of Ryan White after 2013.”
Noting a national AIDS strategy is cur-
rently being developed in the White
House, Schmid said he hopes the plan
will provide the discussion of homosexu-
ality at appropriate ages in sex education
programs because HIV is often transmit-
ted through men who have sex with men.
Schmid gave Obama credit for lifting
the travel ban that prevented foreign
nationals with HIV from entering the coun-
try, although he noted this process began
under the Bush administration with the
passage of the President’s Emergency
Plan for AIDS Relief legislation.
Obama closed his letter by calling on
people to step “outside our comfort
zone” to win broader support for LGBT
rights in places often considered homo-
phobic, such as black churches.
“If we want to repeal DOMA, repeal ‘Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell,’ and implement fully inclusive
laws outlawing hate crimes and discrimination
in the workplace, we need to bring the mes-
sage of LGBT equality to skeptical audiences
as well as friendly ones — and that’s what I’ve
done throughout my career,” Obama wrote.
In the letter, Obama noted that he
spoke out against homophobia during the
presidential campaign at the Ebenezer
Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga., where
Martin Luther King, Jr. once preached.
Obama also spoke out against homo-
phobia during a February speech at the
National Prayer Breakfast in D.C., a gather-
ing of Christian evangelical leaders. And late
last month, Obama spoke in favor of LGBT
rights during his keynote speech at the
National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People’s centennial convention.
Sharon Lettman, executive director of
the National Black Justice Coalition, said
Obama has “absolutely” been faithful to
his promise of speaking out in favor of
LGBT rights in places that are sometimes
deemed unfriendly to LGBT people.
“I’ve experienced it on a number of
occasions in predominantly black or all
black venues,” she said. “Even in his nor-
mal stump speech, he makes reference
to his support of LGBT equality.”
Lettman said as the first black presi-
dent, Obama has a special role to play in
educating black Americans about the
LGBT community.
“He makes a point to always be inclusive,”
she said. “He doesn’t selectively leave it out
— not just in black churches, but in front of
civil rights leaders and civil rights venues, like
the NAACP convention, and other areas.”
Lettman said Obama is “definitely try-
ing to paint a picture of one America” in
his actions and his speeches.
“In so many ways, even in the progres-
sive agenda, people don’t always select
to include our community,” she said, “and
I have to give him a lot of credit for mak-
ing sure that he speaks with one voice
about his support for LGBT equality.”

this week that she had renewed
optimism about the domestic part-
ner benefits bill, which she spon-
sors in the House.
“One issue that got renewed
momentum over this Memorial
Day recess was my bill to pro-
vide domestic partnership and
obligations to federal employees
and their partners,” she said.
Baldwin, the only out lesbian
in Congress, said the issue
received additional attention last
week when President Obama
enacted limited partner benefits
for federal employees through
administrative action.
“At the same time as he signed
this presidential memorandum, he
called on the Congress to send
[my bill] to his desk because he
can’t provide some of these very
important benefits like health
insurance and certain pension
benefits without our passing legis-
lation,” Baldwin said.
In a statement commending
Obama for issuing the benefits,
U.S. House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi also spoke favorably
about the Domestic Partnership
Benefits & Obligations Act as
one way to offer additional bene-
fits to federal workers.
“Congresswoman Baldwin’s
bill will continue to move forward
in the House and we look for-
ward to its progress in the
Senate,” Pelosi said.
The domestic partner bill had
significant momentum late last
year when House and Senate
committees reported it to the
floor in each chamber. For a
time, the legislation had stalled
due to cost offset questions, but
congressional leaders have said
they’ve since received the nec-
essary information.

Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is “responsible
for setting a timetable for consider-
ation of legislation.”
Jim Manley, a Reid spokesper-
son, said a vote hasn’t yet been
scheduled.
Baldwin said she couldn’t offer a
more specific timetable for when she
expects the legislation to advance.
“A lot happened over the course
of this recess in terms of adding
momentum for the legislation,” she
said. “Because it happened over
the recess, and I’ve been in
Wisconsin, and not in Washington,
and not able to have conversations
with my leadership and with the
other players in this, I can’t tell you
if there’s a timetable yet.”
Allison Herwitt, legislative director
for the Human Rights Campaign,
also said she doesn’t know when
Congress would bring the measure
to the floor for consideration.
“Again, the question is how to
move forward and what’s the
timeframe for moving it forward,
so we continue, as we have been
for the past year, advocating to
get this bill done,” she said.
ENDA faces obstacles
LGBT rights supporters have
also strongly pushed for
Congress to take up ENDA,
which would bar employment
discrimination against LGBT
LGBT provisions in foreign affairs authorization bill
people in most public and private
workplace settings.
The legislation remains pend-
ing in House and Senate com-
mittees. Capitol Hill observers
have said ENDA supporters lack
the 60 votes to overcome a fili-
buster in the Senate.
Still, supporters have expressed
optimism about moving forward with
the bill in the House. Baldwin said
the LGBT Equality Caucus has
been “counting the votes” and ask-
ing lawmakers how they would vote
on the legislation or a harmful
motion to recommit on the measure.
“It’s looking strong,” Baldwin
said. “I’m hopeful that we can
see committee consideration
and floor passage very shortly.”

Girl, Virginia mom missing from
Vermont custody fight
MONTPELIER, Vt. — A child custody fight between former lesbian partners is head-
ed back to court in Vermont even though the girl at the heart of it remains missing.
Eight-year-old Isabella Miller-Jenkins and birth mother Lisa Miller failed to appear
for a court-ordered Jan. 1 custody swap in which Miller’s former partner, Janet Jenkins,
was to get the girl. Miller is from Forest, Va. Jenkins is from Fair Haven, Vt.
The girl is listed as missing. The Associated Press reported a lawyer for Jenkins
said Miller and the girl are believed to have flown to El Salvador last September.
According to the Associated Press, the Vermont Supreme Court will hear argu-
ments June 23 from Miller’s attorneys, who say a Family Court judge erred last
November in awarding custody to Jenkins.
Kolbe reacts to McCain opposition
to ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal
WASHINGTON — A former out Republican congressman told the Blade he dis-
agrees with his longtime friend Sen. John McCain’s opposition to repealing “Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell,” but respects his position.
Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.), who served in Congress from 1985 to 2007, said June 2 that he’s
“obviously on the other side” of McCain (R-Ariz.) on the issue of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
“I disagree with him, but Sen. McCain and I have a long relationship and friendship
that goes back a long ways, and we have a history of cooperation on a lot of different
issues for Arizona and for the nation,” Kolbe said. “And so, I may disagree with him on
this, and do, both professionally and personally, but I respect his position.”
McCain has emerged as one of the chief opponents of repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t
Tell” in the U.S. Senate. He’s pledged to stop repeal by supporting a Senate filibuster
of the defense authorization bill to which the repeal language is attached.
Some pundits have speculated that McCain is taking a position in strong opposition
to ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” because he’s facing a primary challenge from conser-
vative J.D. Hayworth.
Kolbe declined to say why McCain is opposed to repeal. The former congressman
said he didn’t know if McCain might change his position on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” but
Kolbe said he hopes the senator will change his mind.
“I certainly hope that he will and be supportive of changing the policy, but I don’t
know,” Kolbe said.
Kolbe noted that he hasn’t had any conversations recently with McCain on “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell.”
In 1996, after Kolbe publicly came out as gay following his vote in favor of the
Defense of Marriage Act, McCain came to the congressman’s defense and said
Kolbe’s coming out didn’t cause “much of a ripple” in Arizona.
Kolbe endorsed McCain during the 2008 presidential campaign. In a Q&A with the
Blade in October 2008, McCain identified Kolbe as someone he counted as among
his gay friends.

UAFA, ENDA face obstacles as elections approach

media outlets that a vote could take place
this month or next.
But a more specific time for when
Congress might take up ENDA is unclear.
Aaron Albright, a spokesperson for the
Education & Labor Committee, said he didn’t
have an update or estimate on the schedule
for committee action on the legislation.
Baldwin said her “crystal ball has been very
unclear” for ENDA consideration and that she
couldn’t offer a more definite timeframe.
“I was hoping it would be some months
ago, but we continue to go through the
vote counts, try to make sure they’re as
solid as possible,” she said.
Herwitt was similarly unsure about
when ENDA would come to the House
floor, although she said HRC was pushing
for it to come before lawmakers.
“Obviously, HRC wants a committee
markup and a floor vote as soon as possi-
ble,” she said. “We would like to continue
the momentum on moving LGBT equality
forward and we would like a House vote
as soon as possible.”
One danger for ENDA in the House is a
legislative maneuver known as the motion
to recommit, which could derail the legis-
lation once it comes to the floor. A suc-
cessful vote on the maneuver on the floor
would enable opponents to send the
motion back to committee.
Supporters have said opponents could tar-
get the bill’s gender identity provisions in the
motion to recommit, although what’s targeted
wouldn’t necessarily be such language.
Baldwin said “there are a lot of med-
dlesome things” that ENDA’s opponents
can do through a motion to recommit
when the bill comes to the floor.
“So we have been really trying to ask
colleagues how they would vote in a wide
variety of scenarios, so that we can feel
confident that we have the votes to defeat
such a motion to recommit,” she said.
Herwitt noted there’s “still some con-
cern” and “vote counting” happening
around the motion to recommit.
“We remain concerned to the extent
that we want to continue working with
leadership to shore up the votes that we
need, so that when the bill comes to the
floor, we have the ability to beat back a
motion to recommit,” Herwitt said.
Herwitt said Pelosi has expressed a com-
mitment to move ENDA to the floor, but wants
to “make sure that we’re looking at angles in
terms of what the motion to recommit would
be, to protect the integrity of the bill.”
“If she brings the bill to the floor, she does-
n’t want to lose,” Herwitt said. “So, she’s an
expert vote-counter. She was a whip for
many years, and so she knows what it takes
to get a bill to the floor. From everything I’ve
heard from her people, she wants to get it
done, but she wants to get it done right.”
Another pro-LGBT bill pending before
Congress is legislation that would enable
same-sex bi-national couples to remain
together in the U.S.
Current immigration law prohibits
LGBT Americans from sponsoring their
foreign partners for residency in the
United States. Consequently, some LGBT
Americans are faced with losing their part-
ners after visas expire, while others expa-
triate with their partners to other countries
with more favorable immigration laws.
Standalone legislation known as the
Uniting American Families Act would rec-
tify this situation. But supporters of the
measure see its inclusion as part of
upcoming immigration reform as the opti-
mal path for passage.
Heading the legislative effort for com-
prehensive immigration reform in the
Senate is Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
His office didn’t respond to a request to
comment on the timing for immigration
reform or whether UAFA would be includ-
ed in the legislation.
Still, Schumer has spoken favorably
about the inclusion of UAFA in compre-
hensive immigration reform, and advo-
cates are expecting him to include the
provision in the bill once it’s introduced.
According to the news website
IrishCentral.com, Schumer said last week at
a fundraising event for Irish Lobby for
Immigration Reform that he thinks Congress
will finish immigration reform by March 2011
— if not by the end of this year.
Steve Ralls, spokesperson for
Immigration Equality, said supporters of
the legislation have been assured
Schumer wants UAFA as part of compre-
hensive immigration reform.
“I would even say, at this point, that the
expectation is that UAFA will be part of
comprehensive reform,” Ralls said. “I think
Immigration Equality and other immigrant
advocates fully expect it to be an inclusive
bill when it’s introduced.”
Still, when Schumer will introduce the
legislation in the Senate remains unclear.
Since the Senate Judiciary Committee
would handle both immigration reform and
U.S. Supreme Court nominations, many
Capitol Hill observers believe the Senate
will first approve the nomination of Elena
Kagan to the Supreme Court before tak-
ing up the immigration issue.

AIDS drug funds threatened by Tea Party scare?

Some Democrats and Repub-
licans in Congress who have long
supported funding for the AIDS
Drug Assistance Program are
reluctant to back the struggling pro-
gram this year because they fear
the additional spending will jeop-
ardize their chances of being re-
elected, Capitol Hill observers and
AIDS activists said this week.

of the National ADAP Working
Group, said intense pressure on
members of Congress to curtail
spending by the so-called Tea Party
movement has made it difficult to line
up support for an emergency sup-
plemental appropriation measure.
Arnold and officials with other
national AIDS and LGBT organi-
zations say the program is facing
a crisis never seen before, where
a growing number of low income
people with HIV or AIDS may be
denied life-saving anti-retroviral
drugs in at least 11 states this
year because state ADAP affili-
ates have run out of money.
Due to a shortage of funds,
the 11 states have been forced
to put in place waiting lists for
patients who otherwise would
have received AIDS medication
prescribed by their doctors.
“It’s ridiculous that people have to
be wait-listed for medicine that they
need to stay alive,” said Laurie
Young, a policy analyst for the
National Gay & Lesbian Task Force.
ADAP was created in 1987
under the Ryan White Care Act to
help pay for AIDS-related drugs for
low-income people with HIV/AIDS,
including those who don’t have
health insurance coverage.
Advocacy groups familiar with
the program say an emergency
appropriation of at least $126
million is needed this year to pro-
vide AIDS drugs for all that need
them. But they say the Obama
administration and Democratic
leaders in Congress have yet to
make a commitment to back
such an appropriations measure.

Read the Patient Information that comes with ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir
disoproxil fumarate) before you start taking it and each time you get a refill since there may
be new information. This information does not take the place of talking to your healthcare
provider about your medical condition or treatment. You should stay under a healthcare
provider’s care when taking ATRIPLA. Do not change or stop your medicine without first
talking with your healthcare provider. Talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you
have any questions about ATRIPLA.
What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?
• Some people who have taken medicine like ATRIPLA (which contains nucleoside
analogs) have developed a serious condition called lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid
in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a medical emergency and may need to be treated in
the hospital. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get the following signs
or symptoms of lactic acidosis:
• You feel very weak or tired.
• You have unusual (not normal) muscle pain.
• You have trouble breathing.
• You have stomach pain with nausea and vomiting.
• You feel cold, especially in your arms and legs.
• You feel dizzy or lightheaded.
• You have a fast or irregular heartbeat.
• Some people who have taken medicines like ATRIPLA have developed serious liver
problems called hepatotoxicity, with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the
liver (steatosis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get the following
signs or symptoms of liver problems:
• Your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice).
• Your urine turns dark.
• Your bowel movements (stools) turn light in color.
• You don’t feel like eating food for several days or longer.
• You feel sick to your stomach (nausea).
• You have lower stomach area (abdominal) pain.
• You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or liver problems if you are female, very
overweight (obese), or have been taking nucleoside analog-containing medicines, like
ATRIPLA, for a long time.
• If you also have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and you stop taking ATRIPLA, you
may get a “flare-up” of your hepatitis. A “flare-up” is when the disease suddenly
returns in a worse way than before. Patients with HBV who stop taking ATRIPLA need
close medical follow-up for several months, including medical exams and blood tests to
check for hepatitis that could be getting worse. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment
of HBV, so you must discuss your HBV therapy with your healthcare provider.
What is ATRIPLA?
ATRIPLA contains 3 medicines, SUSTIVA® (efavirenz), EMTRIVA® (emtricitabine) and VIREAD®
(tenofovir disoproxil fumarate also called tenofovir DF) combined in one pill. EMTRIVA and
VIREAD are HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus) nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase
inhibitors (NRTIs) and SUSTIVA is an HIV-1 non-nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase
inhibitor (NNRTI). VIREAD and EMTRIVA are the components of TRUVADA®. ATRIPLA can be
used alone as a complete regimen, or in combination with other anti-HIV-1
medicines to treat people with HIV-1 infection. ATRIPLA is for adults age 18 and over. ATRIPLA
has not been studied in children under age 18 or adults over age 65.
HIV infection destroys CD4+ T cells, which are important to the immune system. The immune
system helps fight infection. After a large number of T cells are destroyed, acquired immune
deficiency syndrome (AIDS) develops.
ATRIPLA helps block HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, a viral chemical in your body (enzyme) that
is needed for HIV-1 to multiply. ATRIPLA lowers the amount of HIV-1 in the blood (viral load).
ATRIPLA may also help to increase the number of T cells (CD4+ cells), allowing your immune
system to improve. Lowering the amount of HIV-1 in the blood lowers the chance of death or
infections that happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).
Does ATRIPLA cure HIV-1 or AIDS?
ATRIPLA does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. The long-term effects of ATRIPLA are not
known at this time. People taking ATRIPLA may still get opportunistic infections or other
conditions that happen with HIV-1 infection. Opportunistic infections are infections that
develop because the immune system is weak. Some of these conditions are pneumonia,
herpes virus infections, and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection. It is very
important that you see your healthcare provider regularly while taking ATRIPLA.
Does ATRIPLA reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others?
ATRIPLA has not been shown to lower your chance of passing HIV-1 to other people
through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood.
• Do not share needles or other injection equipment.
• Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like
toothbrushes or razor blades.
ATRIPLA® (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate)
• Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safer sex by using a
latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier to reduce the chance of sexual contact with
semen, vaginal secretions, or blood.
Who should not take ATRIPLA?
Together with your healthcare provider, you need to decide whether ATRIPLA is right for you.
Do not take ATRIPLA if you are allergic to ATRIPLA or any of its ingredients. The active
ingredients of ATRIPLA are efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir DF. See the end of this
leaflet for a complete list of ingredients.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking ATRIPLA?
Tell your healthcare provider if you:
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant (see “What should I avoid while taking
ATRIPLA?”).
• Are breast-feeding (see “What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA?”).
• Have kidney problems or are undergoing kidney dialysis treatment.
• Have bone problems.
• Have liver problems, including hepatitis B virus infection. Your healthcare provider
may want to do tests to check your liver while you take ATRIPLA.
• Have ever had mental illness or are using drugs or alcohol.
• Have ever had seizures or are taking medicine for seizures.
What important information should I know about taking other medicines with
ATRIPLA?
ATRIPLA may change the effect of other medicines, including the ones for HIV-1, and
may cause serious side effects. Your healthcare provider may change your other medicines
or change their doses. Other medicines, including herbal products, may affect ATRIPLA. For
this reason, it is very important to let all your healthcare providers and pharmacists know
what medications, herbal supplements, or vitamins you are taking.
MEDICINES YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE WITH ATRIPLA
• The following medicines may cause serious and life-threatening side effects when taken
with ATRIPLA. You should not take any of these medicines while taking ATRIPLA: Vascor
(bepridil), Propulsid (cisapride), Versed (midazolam), Orap (pimozide), Halcion (triazolam),
ergot medications (for example, Wigraine and Cafergot).
• ATRIPLA also should not be used with Combivir (lamivudine/zidovudine), EMTRIVA, Epivir,
Epivir-HBV (lamivudine), Epzicom (abacavir sulfate/lamivudine), Trizivir (abacavir
sulfate/lamivudine/zidovudine), SUSTIVA, TRUVADA, or VIREAD.
• Vfend (voriconazole) should not be taken with ATRIPLA since it may lose its effect or may
increase the chance of having side effects from ATRIPLA.
• Do not take St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), or products containing
St. John’s wort with ATRIPLA. St. John’s wort is an herbal product sold as a dietary
supplement. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are taking or are planning to take
St. John’s wort. Taking St. John’s wort may decrease ATRIPLA levels and lead to increased
viral load and possible resistance to ATRIPLA or cross-resistance to other anti-HIV-1 drugs.
• ATRIPLA should not be used with HEPSERA® (adefovir dipivoxil).
It is also important to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any of the following:
• Fortovase, Invirase (saquinavir), Biaxin (clarithromycin); or Sporanox (itraconazole); these
medicines may need to be replaced with another medicine when taken with
ATRIPLA.
• Calcium channel blockers such as Cardizem or Tiazac (diltiazem), Covera HS or Isoptin
(verapamil) and others; Crixivan (indinavir); the immunosuppressant medicines
cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune, and others), Prograf (tacrolimus), or
Rapamune (sirolimus); Methadone; Mycobutin (rifabutin); Rifampin; cholesterol-lowering
medicines such as Lipitor (atorvastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin sodium), and Zocor
(simvastatin); or Zoloft (sertraline); these medicines may need to have their dose
changed when taken with ATRIPLA.
• Videx, Videx EC (didanosine); tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) may increase
the amount of didanosine in your blood, which could result in more side effects.
You may need to be monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA and didanosine
together. Also, the dose of didanosine may need to be changed.
• Reyataz (atazanavir sulfate) or Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir); these medicines may increase
the amount of tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) in your blood, which could result in
more side effects. Reyataz is not recommended with ATRIPLA. You may need to be
monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA and Kaletra together. Also, the dose
of Kaletra may need to be changed.
• Medicine for seizures [for example, Dilantin (phenytoin), Tegretol (carbamazepine), or
phenobarbital]; your healthcare provider may want to switch you to another medicine or
check drug levels in your blood from time to time.
These are not all the medicines that may cause problems if you take
ATRIPLA. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take.
Keep a complete list of all the prescription and nonprescription medicines as well as any
herbal remedies that you are taking, how much you take, and how often you take them.
Make a new list when medicines or herbal remedies are added or stopped, or if the dose
changes. Give copies of this list to all of your healthcare providers and pharmacists every
time you visit your healthcare provider or fill a prescription. This will give your healthcare
provider a complete picture of the medicines you use. Then he or she can decide the best
approach for your situation.

ATRIPLA® (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate)
How should I take ATRIPLA?
• Take the exact amount of ATRIPLA your healthcare provider prescribes. Never change
the dose on your own. Do not stop this medicine unless your healthcare provider tells
you to stop.
• You should take ATRIPLA on an empty stomach.
• Swallow ATRIPLA with water.
• Taking ATRIPLA at bedtime may make some side effects less bothersome.
• Do not miss a dose of ATRIPLA. If you forget to take ATRIPLA, take the missed dose right
away, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the next dose. Carry on
with your regular dosing schedule. If you need help in planning the best times to take your
medicine, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
• If you believe you took more than the prescribed amount of ATRIPLA, contact your local
poison control center or emergency room right away.
• Tell your healthcare provider if you start any new medicine or change how you take old
ones. Your doses may need adjustment.
• When your ATRIPLA supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider or
pharmacy. This is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may increase
if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop resistance to
ATRIPLA and become harder to treat.
• Your healthcare provider may want to do blood tests to check for certain side effects while
you take ATRIPLA.
What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA?
• Women should not become pregnant while taking ATRIPLA and for 12 weeks after
stopping it. Serious birth defects have been seen in the babies of animals and women
treated with efavirenz (a component of ATRIPLA) during pregnancy. It is not known whether
efavirenz caused these defects. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you are
pregnant. Also talk with your healthcare provider if you want to become pregnant.
• Women should not rely only on hormone-based birth control, such as pills, injections, or
implants, because ATRIPLA may make these contraceptives ineffective. Women must use
a reliable form of barrier contraception, such as a condom or diaphragm, even if they also
use other methods of birth control. Efavirenz, a component of ATRIPLA, may remain in
your blood for a time after therapy is stopped. Therefore, you should continue to use
contraceptive measures for 12 weeks after you stop taking ATRIPLA.
• Do not breast-feed if you are taking ATRIPLA. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention recommend that mothers with HIV not breast-feed because they can pass the
HIV through their milk to the baby. Also, ATRIPLA may pass through breast milk and cause
serious harm to the baby. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are breast-feeding. You
should stop breast-feeding or may need to use a different medicine.
• Taking ATRIPLA with alcohol or other medicines causing similar side effects as ATRIPLA,
such as drowsiness, may increase those side effects.
• Do not take any other medicines, including prescription and nonprescription medicines
and herbal products, without checking with your healthcare provider.
• Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 infection since ATRIPLA does not stop you
from passing the HIV-1 infection to others.
What are the possible side effects of ATRIPLA?
ATRIPLA may cause the following serious side effects:
• Lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a medical
emergency and may need to be treated in the hospital. Call your healthcare provider
right away if you get signs of lactic acidosis. (See “What is the most important
information I should know about ATRIPLA?”)
• Serious liver problems (hepatotoxicity), with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat
in the liver (steatosis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any signs of liver
problems. (See “What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?”)
• “Flare-ups” of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, in which the disease suddenly returns
in a worse way than before, can occur if you have HBV and you stop taking ATRIPLA. Your
healthcare provider will monitor your condition for several months after stopping ATRIPLA
if you have both HIV-1 and HBV infection and may recommend treatment for your HBV.
ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection. If you have
advanced liver disease and stop treatment with ATRIPLA, the “flare-up” of hepatitis B may
cause your liver function to decline.
• Serious psychiatric problems. A small number of patients may experience severe
depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior while taking ATRIPLA. Some patients have
thoughts of suicide and a few have actually committed suicide. These problems may occur
more often in patients who have had mental illness. Contact your healthcare provider right
away if you think you are having these psychiatric symptoms, so your healthcare provider
can decide if you should continue to take ATRIPLA.
• Kidney problems (including decline or failure of kidney function). If you have had kidney
problems in the past or take other medicines that can cause kidney problems, your
healthcare provider should do regular blood tests to check your kidneys. Symptoms that
may be related to kidney problems include a high volume of urine, thirst, muscle pain, and
muscle weakness.
• Changes in bone mineral density (thinning bones). Laboratory tests show changes in
the bones of patients treated with tenofovir DF, a component of ATRIPLA. Some HIV
patients treated with tenofovir DF developed thinning of the bones (osteopenia) which
could lead to fractures. If you have had bone problems in the past, your healthcare provider

may need to do tests to check your bone mineral density or may prescribe medicines to
help your bone mineral density. Additionally, bone pain and softening of the bone (which
may contribute to fractures) may occur as a consequence of kidney problems.
Common side effects:
Patients may have dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, trouble concentrating,
and/or unusual dreams during treatment with ATRIPLA. These side effects may be reduced if
you take ATRIPLA at bedtime on an empty stomach. They also tend to go away after you have
taken the medicine for a few weeks. If you have these common side effects, such as
dizziness, it does not mean that you will also have serious psychiatric problems, such as
severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior. Tell your healthcare provider right
away if any of these side effects continue or if they bother you. It is possible that these
symptoms may be more severe if ATRIPLA is used with alcohol or mood altering (street) drugs.
If you are dizzy, have trouble concentrating, or are drowsy, avoid activities that may be
dangerous, such as driving or operating machinery.
Rash may be common. Rashes usually go away without any change in treatment. In a small
number of patients, rash may be serious. If you develop a rash, call your healthcare provider
right away.
Other common side effects include tiredness, upset stomach, vomiting, gas, and diarrhea.
Other possible side effects with ATRIPLA:
• Changes in body fat. Changes in body fat develop in some patients taking anti-HIV-1
medicine. These changes may include an increased amount of fat in the upper back and
neck (“buffalo hump”), in the breasts, and around the trunk. Loss of fat from the legs,
arms, and face may also happen. The cause and long-term health effects of these fat
changes are not known.
• Skin discoloration (small spots or freckles) may also happen with ATRIPLA.
• In some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS), signs and symptoms of inflammation
from previous infections may occur soon after anti-HIV treatment is started. It is believed
that these symptoms are due to an improvement in the body’s immune response, enabling
the body to fight infections that may have been present with no obvious symptoms. If you
notice any symptoms of infection, please inform your doctor immediately.
• Additional side effects are inflammation of the pancreas, allergic reaction (including
swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), shortness of breath, pain, stomach pain,
weakness and indigestion.
Tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you notice any side effects while taking ATRIPLA.
Contact your healthcare provider before stopping ATRIPLA because of side effects or for any
other reason.
This is not a complete list of side effects possible with ATRIPLA. Ask your healthcare
provider or pharmacist for a more complete list of side effects of ATRIPLA and all the
medicines you will take.
How do I store ATRIPLA?
• Keep ATRIPLA and all other medicines out of reach of children.
• Store ATRIPLA at room temperature 77 °F (25 °C).
• Keep ATRIPLA in its original container and keep the container tightly closed.
• Do not keep medicine that is out of date or that you no longer need. If you throw any
medicines away make sure that children will not find them.

Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient
information leaflets. Do not use ATRIPLA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do
not give ATRIPLA to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may
harm them.

The new memo builds off an earlier
memo Obama issued in June that directed
federal agencies to determine whether the
Defense of Marriage Act prohibited the fed-
eral government from offering the benefits.
In the new memo, Obama says the U.S.
Office of Personnel Management provided
him a report recommending that all these
benefits can and should be extended.
Joe Solmonese, president of the
Human Rights Campaign, said in a state-
ment the new memorandum is “certainly a
positive step” in providing equal rights to
LGBT couples.
“The limitations of these new benefits,
however, serve as a glaring reminder that
the Defense of Marriage Act ultimately
stands in the way of providing true equal-
ity to LGBT Americans,” he said.
In another statement, OPM Director
John Berry, the highest-ranking openly
gay official in the Obama administration,
praised the president for moving forward
with the benefits.

Lesbian couple weds in

Portugal’s 1st gay marriage
LISBON, Portugal — A lesbian couple wed Monday in Portugal’s first same-sex cer-
emony since the predominantly Catholic country introduced a law allowing gay mar-
riage last month.
The Associated Press reported that Teresa Pires and Helena Paixao, divorced
Portuguese mothers in their 30s who have been together since 2003, married in a 15-
minute ceremony at a Lisbon registry office.
“This is a great victory, a dream come true,” Pires was quoted as saying. “Now we’re
a family, that’s the important thing.”
The ceremony came less than a month after Portugal’s conservative president rati-
fied a gay marriage law passed by Parliament in January. His approval made Portugal
the sixth in Europe to allow same-sex couples to wed.
The center-left Socialist government has said the law is part of its effort to modern-
ize Portugal, where homosexuality was a crime until 1982. Three years ago, the same
government lifted Portugal’s ban on abortion, despite church opposition.
Pires and Paixao, the lesbian couple, had campaigned for a change in the law since
a registry office turned them away when they first tried to marry in 2006, according to
the Associated Press.

BOSTON — A Brazilian man was reunited with his Massachusetts husband last
week after U.S. Sen. John Kerry pressed federal officials to temporarily allow the 31-
year-old gay man back into the country on humanitarian grounds.
The Associated Press reported that Brazilian-born Genesio Oliveira rejoined Tim
Coco, 49, of Haverhill, at an emotional reunion at Boston’s Logan International Airport.
Gay rights and immigration rights advocates declared the case a rare victory for gay,
married asylum seekers.
“I’m delighted,” said Oliveira, who married Coco in 2005 in Massachusetts where
gay marriage is legal. “I’ve been waiting for this to happen. I never really undid my bags
since returning to Brazil.”
According to the Associated Press, the couple split nearly three years ago
when Oliveira, nicknamed “Junior,” was forced to return to Brazil after being
denied asylum in the U.S. because the federal government does not recognize
same-sex marriages.
The pair maintained contact through online video chats and sporadic visits during hol-
idays. The case gained international attention from gay rights and immigration advocates
who criticized U.S. officials for separating the couple — who were legally married.
Last year, Kerry asked Attorney General Eric Holder to grant Oliveira asylum on humani-
tarian grounds. Then in March, Kerry wrote Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano asking
her to issue Oliveira “humanitarian parole” based on his fear of persecution in Brazil.
Humanitarian parole is used sparingly to bring someone who is otherwise inadmis-
sible into the U.S. temporarily because of a compelling emergency, according to the
U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Celebrating the good news of 2010
During Pride, reflecting
on progress and
the road ahead

One year ago, I wrote a column
in this space reminding readers of
the promises the Democrats and
President Obama made to LGBT
Americans. Here’s part of what I
wrote in June 2009:
“Since taking control of Congress
in 2006, the Democrats have still
not managed to pass a single
piece of gay rights legislation
through both houses.
“Last June, candidate Obama
issued an open letter to gay voters,
pledging his full support for a federal
hate crimes law and a trans-inclusive
Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
He also reiterated his support for a
repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act
and ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’
“‘As your president I will use the
bully pulpit to urge states to treat
same-sex couples with full equality
in their family and adoption laws,’”
Obama said in the letter.
It’s Pride season again, another
year has passed, so where do
things stand? The news of the last
year has been decidedly mixed.
Indeed, the federal hate crimes law
was finally expanded to include

Mayor Adrian Fenty has made
it clear that he has no pride in
D.C.’s LGBT community. When he
was elected, many believed that
he was the breath of fresh air that
our city needed. What began with
great hope has turned to disap-
pointment and frustration.
Most recently, the tone-deaf cul-
ture the mayor has created in his
administration was on full display
with the PFOX scandal. Rather than
taking responsibility for a mistake
and using it as an opportunity to
show his commitment to full equality
and dignity for LGBT people by con-
demning an anti-gay group, he
blamed it on a staff-level error.
Many asked Mayor Fenty to cor-
rect his initial missteps. A Facebook
group led to an online petition ask-
ing him to “invalidate the certificate
of appreciation and publicly con-
demn PFOX for its policies that
undermine the dignity of LGBT
tion and gender identity. “Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell” appears on the cusp of
repeal, after votes last month by the
full House and the Senate Armed
Services Committee. But the com-
promise repeal language omits any
non-discrimination policy covering
sexual orientation and returns
responsibility for implementing
repeal of the policy to the Pentagon.
And the measure still faces the very
real possibility of a filibuster from
Sen. John McCain, who is barely
recognizable now that he’s moved
to the far right to fend off a conser-
vative primary challenger.
The ban on open service may still
be relegated to the history books by
summer, but getting to this point has
been a sloppy, ugly process. Only
the Democrats could screw up an
issue on which 78 percent of
Americans agree, according to a
recent CNN poll on repealing “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell.” Seventy-eight per-
cent of Americans don’t agree on
evolution, yet here’s a gay rights
issue that’s popular with mainstream
society that’s being reviewed by a
Democratic Congress and White
House. And somehow it’s still con-
troversial and the result remains
delayed and flawed. None of this
bodes well for ENDA or DOMA
repeal. The former has yet to see
hearings or a vote; the latter is
radioactive in an election year.
Despite the disappointments,
people and threaten the mental and
physical health of the most vulnera-
ble in our community.” This state-
ment was supported by a majority
of the D.C. Council, legislators in
Virginia and Maryland, PFLAG,
Trevor Project, GLSEN, Americans
for Democratic Action, Metro DC
PFLAG, the Capital Area Gay and
Lesbian Chamber of Commerce,
and hundreds of gay and allied
leaders in our community.
What did the mayor say in
response to the request for him
to take a principled stand?
Nothing. Nada. Zip. In fact, he
refused to respond. He was MIA.
Such inaction is a recurring
theme for the mayor when it comes
to the LGBT community. The most
cursory assessment of his contribu-
tion to our community is summed up
by: “He signed the marriage bill.” On
the surface, that may seem to be an
indication that he stands with us. But
in a town where a citywide candidate
is not considered viable without sup-
porting marriage equality, simply
signing such an overwhelmingly
popular bill is not that courageous.

he was MIA on the work to make
marriage equality a reality.
there is much to celebrate this Pride
season, including the enactment of
same-sex marriage in D.C., which is
why, for this edition of the Blade, we
chose to recognize the work of 10
people making a difference. Of
course, there are dozens of people
who are doing important work on
behalf of LGBT visibility and equality
so our list is merely a sample of those
helping to make 2010 a memorable
year. At the top of our list is a straight
ally, Rep. Patrick Murphy, an engaging
and hard-working legislator and veter-
an who happens to believe strongly in
repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
He’s a rare politician: a straight
shooter who stands up for what’s
right, despite the potential nega-
tive consequences. The future of
the movement depends on more
such politically courageous advo-
cates pushing for change.
Looking back on that editorial from
last year proved a stark reminder of
just how slowly change comes.
But those words reflected a frus-
tration and impatience that boiled
over in 2010 with the formation of
GetEqual and the advent of direct
action protests at the White House.
The legislative process takes time
and our system is imperfect, but the
ability to advance the rest of our leg-
islative agenda appears in doubt as
we approach the November elec-
tions. When the Democrats lose
seats, look for LGBT issues to be

say something more than “I will
sign the legislation.” Nearly 300
others testified over the course of
two days, possibly a record turnout
for a hearing, according to Council
Member Phil Mendelson. However,
Mayor Fenty was again MIA.
Once the work was done, Mayor
Fenty did stage a triumphant cere-
mony to sign the marriage bill.
Finally, the mayor was no longer
silent. He was celebratory.
No work, just celebrating after
the work is finished. That’s a
recurring theme of Fenty’s tenure.
Mayor Fenty has been MIA on
nearly every issue important to the
LGBT community over the past
four years: the highest HIV infec-
tion rates ever (which was to be his
“No. 1 health priority”), the equi-
table treatment of transgender
people in D.C. jails, the dismantling
of MPD’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison
Unit, the unnecessarily delayed
implementation of a comprehen-
sive anti-bullying program in
schools, and shortening the hous-
bumped to the back burner.
Indeed, change comes slowly,
though sometimes unexpected
change arrives like a swift slap in the
face. That’s exactly how it felt when
the Blade’s former parent company
shut the paper down in November
after crumbling under the weight of
massive debt unrelated to our opera-
tions. Without rehashing those dark
days, I wanted to acknowledge
another group of people who make
me proud: the staff and supporters of
the Blade who made it possible for us
to reinvent ourselves, reclaim the
Blade name from bankruptcy court
(and from out-of-town owners) and
return to our mission of serving local
readers and advertisers.
After a heartbreaking 2009, the
Blade returned in April 2010 and
thanks to our readers and advertis-
ers, the issue you’re holding is even
larger than last year’s Pride edition.
So thank you to everyone who has
contributed to our efforts. This year’s
Pride has a special meaning for me
and I look forward to walking in the
parade with a large
group of Blade sup-
porters and celebrat-
ing all the good that
has come in 2010.

whom the Council rejected.That posi-
tion remains vacant to this day. And
after three and a half years in office,
the mayor hasn’t held a single LGBT
town hall meeting. He’s been MIA.
When he marches in the Pride
Parade this year, it is our chance to
tell Mayor Fenty that he has been
MIA and that we
want a leader that
shows up all the
time, not just when
it’s easy.

It wasn’t always easy to be proud
Coming out
meant overcoming
embarrassment

I have not always had a feeling
of pride in being gay. For much of
my life I was actually embarrassed
and wanted the feelings I had for
men to just go away. I spent years
hoping it was only a phase I was
going through. Turns out it was a
hell of a long phase. I prayed I
would find a wife, have 2.3 children
and a house surrounded by a white
picket fence. I knew nothing about
white picket fences, and less about
houses, as I grew up in a
Manhattan rental apartment. But
TV and books had a great influence
on me so I dreamed of white picket
fences. Maybe it was watching
Donna Reed or Ozzie and Harriet
that did it. Along with the fence, I
also dreamed of Ricky Nelson, but
I couldn’t admit that to anyone.

many years of hiding and pretend-

that we still have a long way to go
before we can fully claim all our
human and civil rights.

that I felt that I could chance being
who I was and true to myself. I
attended my first Pride festival with
a friend at a small dirt field in
Dupont. There was a stage and a
few booths, a lot of political speak-
ers, some not very good entertain-
ment and some drag queens. But
it was inspiring as we were making
our way out of the closet and into
the gay community.
Today both the Capital Pride
celebration and I have morphed
into something very different. I am
very out and very proud. I came to
grips with being gay back in the
1980s. I lived through the height of
the AIDS epidemic and lost many
friends. My first visit to a gay bar
was to the Lost and Found. I had
just taken a new job and my friend
Gayle took me one Friday evening.
The first person I saw there,
propped up on a bar stool, was
someone that was involved in the
non-profit I had just started to work
for. Quickly grabbing Gayle by the
waist I introduced her to him as if to
say, “I am not really gay, just here
with a friend.” I figured I had fooled
him. It took another six weeks for
me to have dinner with him and
come out to him. He just looked at
me and said, “It’s about time!”
I began the process of com-
ing out to family and friends. It
was so much easier than I had
ever believed. Some said they
always knew I was gay, others
said, OK, now what else should
we talk about. But for me a
weight had been lifted off of my
shoulders. It was like finally

being able to take deep breaths
of fresh air.
As I was coming out of my closet
so was Capital Pride. From a small
event in Dupont Circle, then known
as the “fruit loop,” to what it is today.
A sometimes-too-long parade, but
fun anyway, and a huge noisy festi-
val on the nation’s main street,
Pennsylvania Avenue, attended by

Pride budget exceeded $400,000.
I have attended Pride in other
cities. My most memorable was in
New York when there was the con-
fluence of Stonewall 25, the Gay
Games and Pride all lumped
together. I remember walking
down the middle of the street with
friends, in the city in which I grew
up, and thinking there is no better
feeling in the world than this.
My hope is that the young
men and women who will be at
the parade and the festival this
year for their first time will have
some of those same feelings and
experience the ability to say out
loud to the world as the song
goes, “I am what I am!”
There is a serious side to Pride.
There are floats that remind us of
those that died of HIV/AIDS and
those that are living with it. It’s also a
time to remember that not all of the
LGBT community lives with the rel-
ative freedom we have in the District
of Columbia. It’s also important to
watch the politicians march, know-
ing we have important decisions to
make as to who we will vote for,
while remembering which ones
have kept their promises to us, and
which ones have disappointed.
As we celebrate Pride and enjoy
the various events that are part of
it, let us not forget that we in the
LGBT community still have a long
way to go before we can fully claim
all our human and civil rights. We
need to be vigilant in protecting
what we have fought so hard for
and united as we
move forward to
claim the rest of our
rightful heritage.

GAYLAW celebrates 20 years with pride

Legal group energized,
devoted to continuing
its work

This year, GAYLAW, the nation-
al capital area volunteer bar asso-
ciation serving gay, lesbian, bisex-
ual and transgender (“GLBT”)
lawyers, law students and legal
professionals, celebrates its 20th
anniversary. Over the years, GAY-
LAW has been a voice for LGBT
attorneys and non-practitioners
alike. GAYLAW’s history is marked
with several significant events, and
the current leadership has a goal of
building on those accomplish-
ments while honoring the efforts of
those before them.
It all began in 1990, when mem-
bers of the predecessor organiza-
tion, the D.C. Bar Association’s
Section on Criminal and Individual
Rights, Lesbian and Gay Rights
Committee (itself formed in 1980),
decided to sever its formal admin-
istrative ties with the D.C. Bar and
form GAYLAW as an independent,
non-partisan D.C.-area GLBT bar
association.
Despite the visibility and legiti-
macy formal association with the
D.C. Bar provided, the founders of
GAYLAW made the bold decision
to distinguish themselves based
upon the limitations on advocacy
that relationship imposed, includ-
ing limitations on filing amicus
briefs, submitting testimony before
legislative bodies and occasional
pressure to tone down the group’s
rhetoric. The founders had the
foresight to recognize that a new
and independent voluntary bar
association could better pursue
wider involvement in legislation
and legal affairs that impact the
LGBT community.
The founding leadership, includ-
ing co-presidents Gigi B. Sohn and
L. Benjamin Young, soon estab-
lished several keystone projects
that the organization has built upon
through the years and continue
today. GAYLAW’s Attorney Referral
Service continues to connect
clients with LGBT attorneys, hav-
ing been moved online several
years ago. GAYLAW’s Mentor-
Mentee program continues to bring
together law students with more
experienced practitioners, its most
recent class coming together at the
beginning of the 2009-2010 aca-
demic year. And GAYLAW’s chari-
table arm, the GAYLAW Education
Fund, continues to provide grants
to legal interns working for non-
profits supporting the LGBT com-
munity, having just provided
stipends to two legal interns work-
ing in D.C. this summer.
Despite having left the formal fold
of the D.C. Bar, GAYLAW has con-
tinued to serve a very prominent
role in the local legal community.
Particularly notable is GAYLAW’s
work in lobbying the D.C. Bar to
undertake an examination of dis-
crimination in the legal workplace.
Thanks to the efforts of GAYLAW
members, the D.C. Bar formed the
Task Force on Sexual Orientation in
the Legal Workplace, charged with
studying the possible existence and
extent of bias on the basis of sexual
orientation in the legal profession.
The Task Force’s work led to a mon-
umental report issued in 1999 mak-
ing recommendations for legal
workplace reform to combat its find-
ings of extensive discrimination.
Today, GAYLAW continues to
work to advance the interests of the
LGBT community, to be their voice
within the legal community, and to
improve their professional lives.
GAYLAW conducts monthly net-
working events; recruits and trains
volunteers to provide pro bono legal
services for people living with
HIV/AIDS through the Whitman-
Walker Clinic; sponsors the D.C.
Bar Candidates Forum and endors-
es candidates for local bar offices
and the judiciary; and hosts contin-
uing legal education programs,
social activities and other member-
ship networking events.
“We are extremely proud of
GAYLAW’s accomplishments over
the past 20 years,” said Glen
Ackerman, GAYLAW’s co-president.
“Our goal as the stewards of this lega-
cy is to continue to meet the needs of
our membership in this ever-evolving
socio-economic climate.”
One way GAYLAW is adapting
to address challenges currently
faced by its membership is to pro-
vide support for those affected by
the downturn in the economy. Last
fall, GAYLAW hosted a seminar on
dealing with the stress of losing
one’s job, adapting to longer hours
and transitioning jobs. This year,
GAYLAW will be expanding its “Job
Talk,” traditionally geared toward
practitioners just entering the pro-
fession, to include tips and advice
on interviewing techniques, cover
letters and resumes, as well as
alternative paths, geared toward
more seasoned professionals.
“This is an extremely exciting as
well as challenging time to be an
LGBT attorney,” said Sharon
Moore, GAYLAW’s co-president.
“We are thrilled to be able to look
back at the past 20 years and point
to the many accomplishments of
the organization, but at the same
time we aren’t about to rest on our
laurels. As part of our re-dedication
to our mission, we are actively
working at increasing participation
by women and people of color, and
boosting general and referral serv-
ice membership. The board and
membership are energized and
devoted to continuing this work.”

Capital Pride at 35
You ain’t seen
nothing, yet

The thirty-fifth annual celebra-
tion of Capital Pride has taken
over the national capital area.
The local block party that started
it all in 1975 has become one of
the largest Pride festivals in the
country, this year with more than
60 events running from June 3-
13. The work of thousands of
activists, allies, businesses and
elected officials over the past 35
years has made this region one
of the most friendly places in the
country for gay, lesbian, bisexual
and transgender people.
While we celebrate the many
victories of the LGBT community
during Pride, we also know there
is a long way to go before we
gain full equality and civil rights.
That is why we can say, after 35
years of Capital Pride, you ain’t
seen nothing, yet.
We began planning last sum-
mer, not long after Pride 2009
ended, and we are excited to say
that there is something for every-
one during the 35th anniversary of
Capital Pride. By the time that this
issue of the Blade goes to print,
we will have already celebrated
more than 40 diverse events,
including our 35th anniversary
party at the Donovan House; our
town hall, “Aging Proudly”; our
Capital Pride Interfaith Service;
concerts by the Gay Men’s Chorus
of Washington; Pride in the Park;
the Mr. and Miss Capital Pride
competition; Leather Pride; Spy a
Spouse; and more.
But thanks to the combined
efforts of staff and volunteers under
the guidance of the board of direc-
tors and in partnership with our
many business sponsors and our
incredible Community Partners,
there’s still more to come.
This Thursday featured more
than a dozen events. Friday fea-
tures the Women’s Concert, as
well as a wreath laying ceremony
at Arlington National Cemetery,
and the official Capital Pride

Certifiably Gay or at least Certifiably Gay Friendly

There is something about real
estate agents and designations.
We like the string of abbreviations
after our name: GRI, CBR, CRS,
SRES. But truth be told, most buy-
ers and sellers have no idea what
the list of letters mean. There is one
designation that should mean
something to you. You should look
to see if an agent has it: LGBTres,
in other words “Certifiably Gay” or
at least “Certifiably Gay Friendly”.
But seriously…..
According to Justin G. Nelson,
Co-Founder & President of
NGLCC, “The NGLCC and
REALOGY developed the LGBT
Real Estate Specialist (LGB-
TRES) Certification because the
organization identified a need of
the LGBT community to find and
work with professionals that are
well-versed in the needs, expec-
tations and general perceptions
of the LGBT community. While
buying a house as an LGBT indi-
vidual is not radically different
from the experience of a straight
individual, each particular experi-
ence can be shaped by the sales
associate that a consumer works
with – particularly in what is one
of the most personal buying deci-
sions a person makes in their life-
time. There are also can be signif-
icant differences when a same-
sex couples purchases a house
vs. a legally married heterosexual
couples and it is important to
know the differences.
LGBTRES addresses issues of
cultural competency, particularly in
regards to language and word
choices. For example, the phrase
“family friendly” in general brings to
mind a family that would not neces-
sarily be LGBT or even anti LGBT
because of conservative connota-
tion that has been associated with
that phrase. However, by simply
tweaking that phrase to say “friendly
to all families,” or “all family friendly” -
- the remark is now inclusive of
LGBT families. Similarly, being com-
fortable with the words lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender, as well as
acronyms including LGBT, GLBT,
etc shows a familiarity with commu-
nity vocabulary that words such as
“homosexual” may belie.
Our hope is that any sales associ-
ate that participates in the training will
make changes in not just their profes-
sional lives, but also in their personal
lives. Real estate sales associates that
so often gain business by word of
mouth can easily benefit from an edu-
cation that fine-tunes the work they
are already doing with and for the
LGBT community. We hope that this
education will open up the eyes of
sales associates to the home buying
experience of not just LGBT people,
but to all diverse individuals and fami-
lies looking to buy homes.”
In 2007, the LGBT population
accounted for $690 billion in con-
sumer spending. Witeck-Combs
Communications projects that by
2011 the LGBT community will spend
$845 billion in consumer spending. I
am happy to say that I was a part of
the spending in 2007 and plan on
doing my share of spending in 2011.
Do I favor gay friendly establish-
ments? Absolutely, so you can be
sure I will be accessing the NGLCC
database when the needs arise.
The National Gay & Lesbian
Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC)

about equality, opportunity and

ness voice in Washington, on Wall
Street, and down Main Street USA.
We feel it’s imperative to the
advancement of equality and pros-
perity for the LGBT community that
we function as a unified economic
force through our advocacy efforts.”
Here in Dupont, the LGBT com-
munity has a strong voice, but
beyond these streets, it is different.
Which is why supporting a group
like NGLCC helps all of us defend
our rights in every town, on every
block in America. It is about the free-
dom to be ourselves, and not have
to face discrimination or rudeness
when we hire a contractor to fix
something in our home. It is about
getting the same level of service as
someone on the Hill, after all my
green bill has the same value as
theirs (my wallet is just more stylish).
The LGBT Community has higher
discretionary income than any other
market segment. The LGBT
Community is also twice as likely to
own an investment property or sec-
ond home than any other group in the
US. We have more disposable/liquid
income than our heterosexual coun-
terparts. We are more likely to pur-
chase products from Gay friendly
establishments, so why wouldn’t you
look for a real estate agent that is
LGBTres Certified?
I have an experienced group of
Certified LGBTres Specialists in
my office and I asked several of
them what their thoughts are for
the need for this type of training &
designation.: “Having the GLBT
Specialist designation indicates I
maintain a higher level of sensitivi-
ty to the needs of the GLBT com-
munity. As a gay realtor, I can
relate on a personal level to my
GLBT clients. The class instruction
I received in gaining the GLBT
designation was invaluable.”

What is REYATAZ?
REYATAZ is a prescription medicine used with other anti-HIV medicines to treat
people who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the
virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). REYATAZ is a
type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV infection destroys CD4+
(T) cells, which are important to the immune system. The immune system helps
fight infection. After a large number of (T) cells are destroyed, AIDS develops.
REYATAZ helps to block HIV protease, an enzyme that is needed for the HIV
virus to multiply. REYATAZ may lower the amount of HIV in your blood, help your
body keep its supply of CD4+ (T) cells, and reduce the risk of death and illness
associated with HIV.
Does REYATAZ cure HIV or AIDS?
REYATAZ does not cure HIV infection or AIDS. At present there is no cure for
HIV infection. People taking REYATAZ may still get opportunistic infections or other
conditions that happen with HIV infection. Opportunistic infections are infections
that develop because the immune system is weak. Some of these conditions are
pneumonia, herpes virus infections, and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC)
infections. It is very important that you see your healthcare provider regularly
while taking REYATAZ.
REYATAZ does not lower your chance of passing HIV to other people through
sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. For your
health and the health of others, it is important to always practice safer sex by
using a latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier to lower the chance of sexual
contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Never use or share dirty needles.
Who should not take REYATAZ?
Do not take REYATAZ if you:

are taking certain medicines. (See “What important information should I
know about taking REYATAZ with other medicines?”) Serious life-threatening
side effects or death may happen. Before you take REYATAZ, tell your
healthcare provider about all medicines you are taking or planning to take.
These include other prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins,
and herbal supplements.

are allergic to REYATAZ or to any of its ingredients. The active ingredient
is atazanavir sulfate. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of
ingredients in REYATAZ. Tell your healthcare provider if you think you have
had an allergic reaction to any of these ingredients.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before I take REYATAZ?
Tell your healthcare provider:
t

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if
REYATAZ can harm your unborn baby. Pregnant women have experienced
serious side effects when taking REYATAZ with other HIV medicines called
nucleoside analogues. You and your healthcare provider will need to decide
if REYATAZ is right for you. If you use REYATAZ while you are pregnant, talk
to your healthcare provider about the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry.

If you are breast-feeding. You should not breast-feed if you are HIV-positive
because of the chance of passing HIV to your baby. Also, it is not known if
REYATAZ can pass into your breast milk and if it can harm your baby. If you
are a woman who has or will have a baby, talk with your healthcare provider
about the best way to feed your baby.

If you have liver problems or are infected with the hepatitis B or C virus.

VIREAD® (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate), you should also be taking NORVIR®
(ritonavir).

Always take REYATAZ with food (a meal or snack) to help it work better.
Swallow the capsules whole. Do not open the capsules. Take REYATAZ at
the same time each day.
t
If you are taking antacids or didanosine (VIDEX® or VIDEX® EC), take
REYATAZ 2 hours before or 1 hour after these medicines.
t

If you are taking medicines for indigestion, heartburn, or ulcers
such as AXID® (nizatidine), PEPCID AC® (famotidine), TAGAMET®
(cimetidine), ZANTAC® (ranitidine), AcipHex® (rabeprazole), NEXIUM®
(esomeprazole), PREVACID® (lansoprazole), PRILOSEC® (omeprazole),
or PROTONIX® (pantoprazole), talk to your healthcare provider.
t

Do not change your dose or stop taking REYATAZ without first talking
with your healthcare provider. It is important to stay under a healthcare
provider’s care while taking REYATAZ.
t

When your supply of REYATAZ starts to run low, get more from your
healthcare provider or pharmacy. It is important not to run out of REYATAZ.
The amount of HIV in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for
even a short time.
t
If you miss a dose of REYATAZ, take it as soon as possible and then take
your next scheduled dose at its regular time. If, however, it is within 6 hours
of your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Wait and take the next dose
at the regular time. Do not double the next dose. It is important that you
do not miss any doses of REYATAZ or your other anti-HIV medicines.

If you take more than the prescribed dose of REYATAZ, call your
healthcare provider or poison control center right away.
Can children take REYATAZ?
Dosing recommendations are available for children 6 years of age and older for
REYATAZ Capsules. Dosing recommendations are not available for children from
3 months to less than 6 years of age. REYATAZ should not be used in babies under
the age of 3 months.
What are the possible side effects of REYATAZ?
The following list of side effects is not complete. Report any new or continuing
symptoms to your healthcare provider. If you have questions about side effects,
ask your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider may be able to help you
manage these side effects.
The following side effects have been reported with REYATAZ:

mild rash (redness and itching) without other symptoms sometimes occurs
in patients taking REYATAZ, most often in the first few weeks after the
medicine is started. Rashes usually go away within 2 weeks with no change
in treatment. Tell your healthcare provider if rash occurs.
t

severe rash: In a small number of patients, a rash can develop that is
associated with other symptoms which could be serious and potentially
cause death.
If you develop a rash with any of the following symptoms stop using
REYATAZ and call your healthcare provider right away:
