All of the fiat kind have eight arms, placed at
equal diflances round the head ; below the arms are
two eyes, and the body is (hod and thick.
The Cuttle-fifh, and the Calamary, have each of
them ten arms; of which eight arc fflorter ones, ta-
pering gradually to a point from the head, where they
all rife, to their extremities: the other two (frequent-
ly called Tentacula) am three or four times as long,
perfettly round, ffender, and of an equal thicknefs
for above two thirds of their whole length ; then
fpreading into a form nearly like that of the fhorter
arms. Glut numbers of gemsbok, or lockers, are
placed fomewhat 'irregularly on each of the (hotter
arms, and on tbe fpreading parts of the Tentacula,
whore fonte of the fuckers are a great deal larger than
the refl.
The body of the Cuttle-fith is broad and fiat, ha-
ving within it a broad friable white bone; that of the
Calamary is a fort of cartilaginous cafe.holding the
intellines, of a roundiih oblong Ilium furnilhed with
two fins, and having within it a thin tranfparent elaf-
tic (abidance likc lfinglafs.
