Re: Our Pennsylvania 8th CD Poll Shows Murphy Leading Fitzpatrick

Harstad Strategic Research conducted a telephone survey among 507 likely voters in
Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District from September 20 to 22, 2010. The survey
was conducted for SEIU and VoteVets.

The survey shows Democrat Patrick Murphy leading among all voters by 49% to 46%
for Republican Mike Fitzpatrick, with 5% undecided.

However, Murphy actually enjoys wider leads among the more likely voters.

Among the 87% of respondents who say they will “definitely vote,” Murphy holds a 50%
to 45% lead.

And among the 75% of respondents who actually voted in the last mid-term election in
November 2006, Murphy’s lead expands to 52% versus 44% for Fitzpatrick.

Our sample actually has more registered Republicans tilt than the district as whole, with
the two parties essentially tied at 45% Democrats, 44% Republican, with the balance
unaffiliated or Independent. So if anything this survey skews a bit more conservative
than the overall electorate.

Harstad Strategic Research has polled for President Obama since 2002, and counts
five sitting U.S. Senators among its clients: Jack Reed of Rhode Island, Mark Udall,
Jon Tester, Tom Harkin, and Michael Bennet. Known for its accuracy in polling, the
firm’s tracking survey in Pennsylvania from October 30 to November 1, 2008, had
Barack Obama’s share of the vote (at 53%) within 1% of his actual winning 54% share
of the vote in that state.
