REFLECTION- 6

What I learnt was some issues about pronunciation. Honestly I don’t know how
to teach pronunciation but I know how important it is. I guess the main basis of
teaching pronunciation is that it can be taught through listening and speaking
activities. Therefore I think I can use these types of activities to make the class
more interesting to them. For example, I can create some contextual examples
like role plays, language games and discussions to make them use new
vocabulary with correct pronunciation. Also, if I want to give them homework,
it would probably be listening debates on radio or watching a movie on TV. I
know it will be boring if I devote the whole lesson to teach how to pronounce
the words so I guess instead of giving them all the rules theoretically, I can
teach them with grammar, reading or listening.

I know they will make mistakes while speaking English just like we make right
now and I guess I should focus more on correcting their mistakes. I know I have
to ask myself “how?” and as a humanist teacher, the first thing I’m going to say
is errors must be tolerated. Therefore, I will note the errors to correct them in
different ways later. I hope I should not scare them about pronunciation;
otherwise speaking would be like an instrument of torture for them. That’s all I
can say now but I hope I can develop new strategies for my own sake.
