TRANSITIVE & INTRANSIVE VERBS

 A transive verb takes a direct object. A prepososition is not used after it. eg. She owns a boutique. He helps his friend.

 An intransive verb does not take a direct object. Apreposition comes after it, followed by the object. e.g My friend work in (preposition) a bank (object). Steven lives near the stadium We meet for dinner at Susan s place this evening. The puppy played with its favourites bone and entertained itself for an hour

 However some verb such as meet, play, sing, sleep, write can be both transitive and intransitive.
transitive I met a stranger man at the supermarket yesterday Michael Chang played a good game against Agassi and won after a batttle of over an hour.

In the had better sructure, the accopanying verb is in the basic form. eg. You had beter be more careful. We had bettter not annoy our teacher any further
