Cohesive devices- are words or phrases that are used to link or clarify the

relationship among ideas (in sentences or paragraphs). Gives signal to the


reader what the relationships are between the different clauses, sentences
and paragraph.
Ex: Viu has many korean dramas and shows and it is only $5.
Comparison- those are cohesive devices that are used to compare
Examples: also, equally, similarly, likewise, compared with
-Jane speaks French. Sam also speaks French.
Addition – use to add information or idea
Ex. and, also, furthermore, too
- Eating well is important for good health. Furthermore, it helps to make
you more attractive.
Exemplification –use in illustrating or showing examples
Ex. For example, for instance, to illustrate, such as, namely
Adjective is a word that modifies noun or pronoun such as beautiful and ugly.
I can play few musical instrument, for example, the flute, the guitar and the
piano.
Sequencing- cohesive devices that are use to combine in a particular order.
Examples: first, second, next, then, after
I will clean my room then I will wash all my clothes.
Result- cohesive devices that are used to state what is the outcome/result.
Examples: so, therefore, as a result, thus, because, accordingly, in
consequence, lead to…
They were angry because their plans had been discovered.
The treasure is not mine, and therefore I am willing to take it.
Contrast- word or phrase that tells us the information that will follow is different
from what comes before it.
Collocation- refers to how words go together or form fixed relationships.

USAGES:
1. Adverb + Adjective
Examples: completely satisfied (NOT downright satisfied)
-We entered a richly decorated room.
2. Adjective + Noun
The doctor ordered him to take regular exercise.
He was writhing on the ground in excruciating pain.
3. noun + noun
Let's give Mr. Jones a round of applause.
The ceasefire agreement came into effect at 11am.
I'd like to buy two bars of soap please.
4. noun + verb
The lion started to roar when it heard the dog barking.
5. verb + noun
He has been asked to give a presentation about his work.
6. verb + expression with preposition
We had to return home because we had run out of money.
At first her eyes filled with horror, and then she burst into tears.
Their behaviour was enough to drive anybody to crime.
7. verb + adverb
She placed her keys gently on the table and sat down.
Mary whispered softly in John's ear.
I vaguely remember that it was growing dark when we left.
