SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

Dear Parents and Guardians:

As you may know, last spring, the District reached an Agreement with United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) to
shorten the student instructional year by three days for the 2011-12 school year in order to save money, save
jobs and help balance the District’s budget. Last December, UTLA started a legal challenge to their shortened
work year based on a disputed contract interpretation. That dispute has finally been resolved by a legal decision
which rejected the UTLA claims. As parents and guardians, you can now finalize your own calendars and make
the appropriate child care arrangements.

Our 2011-12 school year will be shortened by removing the last three days of instruction. The dates are as
follows:

Calendar Last Day of Instruction

Traditional Single-Track Tuesday, June 19
Balanced Traditional Calendar Tuesday, June 19
Early Start Calendar Tuesday, May 29
4-Track, Track A Monday, June 25
4-Track, Track B Monday, June 25
4-Track, Track C Monday, June 25
4-Track, Track D Wednesday, May 2
3-Track, Track A* Wednesday, June 27
3-Track, Track B* Wednesday, June 27
3-Track, Track C* Wednesday, April 25

*On 3-Track calendars, the equivalent of the third instructional day will be scheduled by each site from the
combination of two minimum days and one shortened day.

We regret having to reduce the number of instructional days, but with our continuing loss of State financial
support, we believe it is necessary. I am relieved that the upcoming reduced instructional time for this school
year is three days rather than the five days of last year. The savings that result from these reduced instructional
days will help us retain more teachers and staff to serve your children.

If you have any questions, please call the Office of School Operations at (213) 241-5337, or the Office of Staff
Relations at (213) 241-6056.

Cordially,

Dr. John E. Deasy,

Superintendent of Schools
