The vineyards in New Zealand are the most southerly in the world.
When visiting New Zealand, one will find a variety of climates, landscapes, white sandy beaches, waterways, and mountains. It is a country of hidden treasures, vastunspoiled beauty, friendly people, world-class wines and succulent lamb. It is the only place in the world where one can see active volcanoes, rain forests, fjords, and glaciers all in the course of one day. The beautiful, yet sophisticated harbor cities of Auckland and Wellington, are located on the North Island. Located nearby, are popular sites such as the bubbling geothermal lakes of Rotorua and the peaceful little retreat of Waiheke Island. On the South Island, the picturesque and tranquil communities of Nelson, Blenheim, and Christchurch can be found. Other important sites of the South Island include Wainui Falls, Abel Tasman National Park, and the famous ski resort, Wanaka. New Zealand is home to some of the most exciting food in the Pacific. Boldly seasoned dishes, infused with complex flavors of Southeast Asia, Polynesia, and the South Pacific, are on most menus. Lamb and an abundance of fresh exotic fruits and vegetables are also among the favorite dishes. New Zealand offers a wide range of activities including: bungee jumping; skiing; river rafting; jet skiing; cave-rafting; mountain biking; fishing; kayaking; and golfing. This exciting region also possesses natural wildlife habitats to explore, world-class spas to enjoy, and of course wine tasting to take pleasure in.

The only native mammals in New Zealand are two species of bats.
When traveling inland from the coastlines of New Zealand, one will find the lush valleys that are blanketed with velvety, green grapevines. New Zealand, a land that lies isolated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, is a producer of some of the worlds most amazing Sauvignon blancs and other crisp, white wines. Up until the 1980s, few wine drinkers other than New Zealanders themselves, had ever tried a wine from this country. It now ranks thirty-third in wine production and twentyeighth in wine consumption. Between 1994 and 1998, New Zealand vintners increased from 31 to 293, and today have more than quadrupled in number. The country consists of two islands that are referred to simply as the North Island, and the South Island. Because of each of the Islands long and narrow shapes, the grape vines are located no more than 80 miles from the sea. The chilliness of this steady and cool maritime climate allows the grapes to ripen evenly over the course of a long growing season. This unique climate intensifies the exotic flavors of the wines, which are carefully handcrafted in this diverse country. The coolness creates wines that are high in acid and have rich fruit flavors that are crisp and refreshing. Over 75 percent of the wine that is produced in New Zealand is white, although balanced Pinot Noirs, Cabernet Sauvignons, and Merlots can also be found.
NEW ZEALAND
The wine region of Auckland and its northern territory is rather small, but big in wine politics, producing many varietals from over 90 wineries. It is the countrys wine because headquarters mainly due to the fact that the city of Auckland is the heart of the region, although there are seven smaller districts within the Auckland wine region. Matakana is now producing promising reds and Waiheke Island is a leader in producing Cabernet based blends and Chardonnay. Wellington, Wairarapa and Martinborough are the southernmost regions of the North Island. The Burgundy of New Zealand is now producing wonderful Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay within the town of Martinborough. The South Island is overall cooler than the wine regions of the Northern Island, and is divided between four major wine regions. Nelson and Marlborough are the two largest producers. Nelson, with more rain, can often have difficulty getting the grapes to the desired ripening level. Marlborough is the premier wine region boasting over 42 percent of all New Zealands vineyards. With a long, slow ripening season, a lot of sunshine, cool nights and low rainfall, Marlborough is famous for stunning Sauvignon Blanc, which is the most expensive and popular wine produced. Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and small amounts of sparkling wine can also be sampled while visiting this famous wine region. The cool Canterbury region, located midway down the length of the island, and the most southerly and coldest wine region Central Otago, are both fast-growing regions. They each show considerable promise for cold weather varieties of wine and include still and sparkling wines made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Unfortunately, rain and frost can be an ongoing problem making these areas difficult and unpredictable from vintage to vintage.
