REDCROSS Terms Definitions

Osteoporosis
Gradual weakening of bones (most likely over age)

Fractures
complete break, chip, or

crack in the bone

Sprains
tearing of ligaments at a joint Strainstretching and tearing of muscles and tendons

CPR
cardiopulmonary resuscitation- used to circulate oxygen in the blood to the rest of the body

V-fib
ventricular fibrillation-

ventricles don't contract, heart cannot send blood, no signs of life

V- tach
ventricular tachycardiaventricals contract too quickly, heart cannot pump blood properly,

no signs of life :)

Asthma
airway shrinks because of weather, allergies, particles in air

Hyperventilation

happens by anxiety; rapid and shallow breathing; "calm down, take deep breaths"

Anaphylatic shock
allergic reactions, swelling in lips, breathing difficult

Emphysema
destroys air sacs and makes breathing difficult

Coronary Heart Disease fattening deposits in

arteries; stops flow of blood

First Degree Burn top layer of skin; skin is red and dry, usually painful and area may swell; heals within a week without permanent scarring

Second Degree Burn top layers of skin; skin is red, painful, blisters that may open and weep clear fluid, maing skin appear wet, swelling; heals 3-4 weeks, may scar

Third Degree Burn all layers of skin and some or all underlying structures; skin may be brown or black (really painful or relatively painless); healing may require medical assistance, scarring likely.

Shock
Life threatening condition in which not enough blood is being delivered to the body

Rescue Breathing helps sustain life, after 2 min about 40, once

every 3 seconds
