. Swenson 14 de agosto de 2007 The grid method and the spherical projection The grid method consists in overlaying a grid onto an image. This was used by painters to copy images or to teach their students how to paint. Now this method is also used to locate points on a map and it is called the military grid. With this method, a number of lines is superimposed o a map and the position is stated by quoting the number of lines that intersects the point in question. In this method you will have for example a Cartesian plain in which you will have a point located in there, previously you must have your grid on your map and then looking at the coordinates you will see were is the point. Spherical projection, when someone is talking about maps and uses the term projection it refers to any function defined on the earths surface and with values on the plane. The spherical projection has been used to show or to give us and idea of how the Earth will be represented, although the Earth is not exactly a sphere, they use this representation on the globes or atlases. When a spherical system is used all the horizontal lines are called latitudes or parallels and the vertical lines are called longitudes or meridians and those lines cover the globe forming a grid. The latitude and longitude are angles measured from the center of the Earth, and they define the position of point above the globe. They correspond to the angle of a line that extends itself from the center of the globe to the surface as a spherical coordinates system. It is very difficult to make some measurements in spherical coordinates, that is the reason, because we have to project those geographic data into a Cartesian plane, with this we can use get the position in a pair of coordinates called (x,y).
