Turning Points in History: The Battle of Chickamauga by: Lee Spicer

Thesis Statement: The Battle of Chickamauga was a turning point for the Confederacy for many reasons. While it was the last great victory for the South, a fatal mistake was made that led to an even more important victory for the Union only a short time later in Chattanooga. The Battles for Chattanooga resulted in the Union forces being able to turn the tide in the South and opened the gate for Shermans March to the Sea. Therefore, what appeared at first to be a great victory, ended in turning the tides of the war against the Southern Confederacy.

How I chose my topic: I chose my topic because I love the history of the Civil War. I really like the battlefields and decided with my dad that Chickamauga would be a good topic. I researched the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battles of Chattanooga to understand why they would be a turning point in the war. I also knew I could visit the battlefield to help with my research.

How I conducted my research: I was able to visit the McClung museum in Knoxville to begin working and researching. I also searched through online resources. My family visited the Chickamauga Battlefield and Museum, as well. There I watched the video, took pictures of the artifacts, and bought two books to help with my research.

How I created my project and selected my project category: I decided to do a website because I was able to gather lots of information and pictures. Our teacher showed us how to use the weebly site and add multimedia to make our project better. I wrote my script for the website after I had gathered all my research together. I then took the information and organized it in time. Then I added the pictures and documents that I had collected.

How my project relates to the NHD theme: My project relates to the theme Turning Points in History because the Battle of Chickamauga was an event that was a negative turning point. Even though the Confederates won the battle, they would go on to lose the Battles of Chattanooga because the Battle of Chickamauga cost them dearly. They never regained the strength they had there. Also, the Union was able to finally turn the war in its favor and really finish the war with Shermans March to the Sea. They were able to do this after the win in Chattanooga.
