Pumpkin Seed Project *I do not yet have the teacher resources available with this project because you have to sign up before you obtain them. There is very little detail on the website as to what exactly those resources include, nor is there an activity guide available prior to signing up. Sign ups are not yet available. I will update this lesson plan as more information is made available to me* Date: October 25-31 2012 Subject: Mathematics GL Structure: Database creation Objective: Students will further refine their estimation skills in a fun, seasonal project that includes collaboration with other classrooms. Common Core Standards: Estimation is not something that is required as part of the Common Core Standards for 3rd graders. This is an area that is very weak for most students so the extra practice is very helpful. ISTE Standards: 1.D Identify trends and forecast possibilities. 2.D Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems. 4.C Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. Assessment: Informal Observation of students estimation skills, interview of students as to how and why they estimated what they did. Resources: At least one pumpkin Book: How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin Technology Requirements: Web connection with access to VoiceThread --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Anticipatory Set: Teacher will read aloud How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin by Margaret McNamara to students. Tell students we will be participating in activities throughout the week that focus on pumpkins and their seeds. This will be a great way to get in the Halloween spirit! Input: Review estimation skills. Guided Practice: Have each student make a guess as to how many pumpkin seeds the pumpkin contains. Record data where all students can see. As a class open the pumpkin up and count the Grade Level: 3

number of pumpkin seeds contained in the pumpkin. Record results. Discuss with the class. Teacher will then record the results on the project webpage. Independent Practice: Students will write a response in their journal comparing their results with the actual results. They will provide support if their guess was close and will provide an explanation as to why they thought it was what they guessed if they were far off. Closure: Class will participate in the Pumpkin Fashion Show with other classes in VoiceThread. At the conclusion of the project teacher will also download overall results so that a comparison can be made between our class and the overall average.

Pumpkin Seed Project Outcomes My students truly enjoyed this project. It was our first activity of the year working with estimation. They loved participating in the activity, but also checking several times throughout the day to see the outcomes of other classrooms. They were very excited when we saw that Ms. Goold (from cadre 20) was also participating. I had a parent volunteer that assisted with graphing our results. After scooping the seeds we sorted them into groups of ten and practiced regrouping into tens and hundreds. I did not end up with photos because I was elbow deep in pumpkin!

384 594 Thanks for a super fun project! We loved it! 516 432 Wow there were a lot of seeds in that small pumpkin! The kids had a great time. They all underestimated the number of seeds in our small pumpkin! One 724 student did gues 324 so at least he got the right tens and ones! :) 309 It was really funny to have the same students estimating the number of seeds for the second year in a row, estimating 5 seeds or 23 seeds. I was surprised to see that they forgot how many seeds from the 352 year before. Thank you for providing this project. 404 407 508 335 445 The students were amazed at how many seeds there were, their estimates ranged from 7 to 200. :) 248 Happy Pumpkin Day! my class enjoyed this project- had a great time with their pumpkin investigation--measuring, see if it would float, discovering how many lines, how many unifix cubes tall, planting seeds and eating the 350 roasted ones. 267 My students really enjoyed doing this project. 422 372 263 We were surprised by how many seeds were in such a small pumpkin! 496 298 396 457 We took an average of our 56 pumpkins- we did it twice! 460 LOVE LOVE LOVE this project! It was a HUGE success once again! Thanks Jen!!! This was great. 240 Thanks for letting us join in with your project. Great project! We had fun and we were learning at the same time. Who would have thought there were 460 so many seeds in such a small pumpkin :) 780 397 560 Kids loved this 430 This group had a great time playing in the pulp and seeds! 593 Fun! 335 278 567 Kids enjoyed it! 223 187 273 452 We had a blast counting our pumpkin seeds and looking at the "ooey gooey" inside the pumpkin. 521 Such a great hands on project. My Kinder kiddos absolutely LOVED it and cannot wait to view all the results! This project went right along with the new Common Core Standrds and our PDSA cylce 'plan'. This was the first project I have participated in and look forward to doing many more! Thank you for this 557 great opportunity for not only myself but also for my students! 380 Thanks!

465 495 We were surprised by how many seeds there were! 524 450 461 437 My kids had a great time figuring out which way to count out the seeds. 467 339 This activity was awesome!!!! 204 This was a fun activity. We were surprised that our pumpkin only had 204 seeds! Thank you so much!! 446 863 We had lots of fun getting messy!! 432 484 484 445 493 We had estimates from 5 seeds to 500 seeds. What a fun project! We did it after a field trip to the 397 pumpkin patch. After we counted our seeds we cleaned, salted, roasted, and ate them! Great Day! 417 We put our seeds into cups of 10 and then counted by 10s and 100s. We were surprised that there was 410 a multiple of 10! 550 298 382 We had a BLAST!! This is just one pumpkin, but we did the activity five times with different groups and 253 pumpkins. Thanks for allowing us to participate. 504 467 500 277 500 434 Loved this project! Thank you! 321 We enjoyed the project! We learned a lot about estimation. 405 143 Thank you, we thought this project was awesome!! We loved participating in this world wide project! Our pumpkin was 14 pounds and the students mostly estimated either 100 (or below) and 1,000 seeds. 514 The students enjoyed making "gut" sculptures after counting the seeds. 382 Great fun! Thanks for allowing us to participate! How come there were so many seeds in such a small pumpkin? We were surprised! Jennifer, how did you think of this project? We really liked it! Thank you for making this project for us! Did you have fun making this project? What kind of pumpkins do you like? 576 We counted our seeds by putting each seed on a blank spot of a 100s chart. that helped us out a lot. Our class really enjoyed participating in the Pumpkin Seed Project. Due to Hurricane Sandy we have not 396 been in school all week, so I am so happy we completed the activity last week! 417 528 592 464 Thank you! 408 We counted the seeds in groups of 10. Originally we thought we had 559, but then we found one on the floor making for a grand total of 560! We rolled our preparation for a school wide "Invention Convention" into this project by brainstorming, and then building models of, an invention to keep our hands clean while 560 we carved the pumpkin and scooped out the seeds. Thanks for the fun project!! 330 457 This was actually the result of one group. We had four different groups doing this.

382 Thank you for coordinating this! We really enjoyed doing this project. We used the counting by tens to help us quickly get through all the 350 numbers 466 564 347 420 Thanks for organizing! 220 629 This was great! Thanks! We are a little late with our results because Hurricane Sandy closed our school in New Jersey for a week. We are thinking of all the students and families on the east coast who may have suffered loss 326 during the storm. 280 269 385 457 We had a lot of fun estimating the number of seeds in our pumpkin. Our estimates ranged from 6 to 220 1200. 440 It was great fun for kids & good formative assessment for place value for me! Thanks!! 418 My class had a blast with this project. They were doing so much mental math; it was a lot of fun to see. 400 Thank you so much for sharing these great ideas! This was a great project. 441 Thank you!! You can learn more about our project by visiting "A Little Tech" at 370 http://lsusdtech.blogspot.com/2012/10/pumpkin-project.html 488 280 Thank you again for setting this up. My 2nd graders had a great time! 521 547 574 445 480 Thank you so much for your wonderful projects! They are what I'm remembered for in my classroom!!!! 492 517 444 We loved this project! 297 264 Fun!! Our kindergarten students enjoyed counting the seeds in our pumpkin. Our lowest guess was 12 seeds 458 and our highest guess was 1007 seeds. The closest guess was 102 seeds. Great hands-on project! 352 Awesome fun! My students had a blast! 301 382 Thank you! 177 We counted seeds from 4 pumpkins. After reading the book, How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?, students predicted that a larger pumpkin would have more seeds (based on how many lines were on the outside, how dark it was). That pumpkin had the second highest number of seeds. Students also counted the different groups of seeds by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and all agreed that counting by 10s made the process easier. It was fun counting the seeds on Halloween. The students whose estimates were closest to the 365 actual seed count got to take the pumpkin home. 363 202 770 241 The children all had a great time separating seeds from the pulp and counting them! 450 376 Our class enjoyed doing this project. We are doing a larger pumpkin also. We did this project in groups and found that the pumpkin that weighed the most had the least amount of 356 seeds. 433 327 289 452 470 This project was messy but so much fun! Thank you for these fabulous projects! Each year my students are thoroughly engaged in activities which 438 align with our curriculum. 543 We loved this messy project! There were more seeds than we ever imagined! 175 Thanks for the extra days. We lost a few days because of Hurricane Sandy. 400 249 459 More seeds than expected! 335 251 319 485 149 Thank you for extending the project. We have a few more things to wrap up and we will do that next 472 week...but I can now send our data in. The kids loved the project! 302 Thanks as always for a great project! My students really enjoyed this project! They had fun estimating, counting, and discussing their findings! 550 We are looking forward to comparing our results with all the other participants. We had so much fun with this project!

Holiday Card Exchange Date Range: December 9-21, 2012 Subject: Reading, writing, global perspectives, math, and science GL Structure: Sequential Creations Objective: Students will create holiday cards that will be exchanged with 30 classrooms across the United States, Canada, and Australia. Cards will contain data on average temperature; students will then graph the data to compare average temperature across the world. Common Core Standards: 2.W.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. 2.MD.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph. ISTE Standards: 2.C Develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures. 2.D Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems. Assessment: Formal creation of graph showing average temperature on Dec. 15 from each partner school. Informal discussion for each time a card was received. Resources: Projects by Jen Holiday Card Exchange website http://www.projectsbyjen.com/Projects/HCE2012/hce2012information.html Partner School Information sheet 30 cards created by students Technology Needed: Web connection to connect with partner schools. Email to communicate with partner classrooms. ______________________________________________________________________________ Anticipatory Set: Discuss the different holiday traditions that each student has. If someone does not suggest sending cards, bring it up and discuss how fun it would be to send holiday cards to students all over the world. Grade Level: 2

Input: Introduce the project and show where partner classrooms are located on the map. Discuss that we will be creating cards to send to classrooms. Also include facts about classroom that will help with graphing the completed project. Independent Practice: Students will create cards to send out. Cards need to be sent out by December 10. Guided Practice: As cards arrive discuss location and class demographics. Graph average weather temperature as each card arrives. Closure: Compare and contrast the locations that various cards arrived from. Look at weather, activities, and boy to girl ratio.

Holiday Card Outcome This has been my students favorite project so far this year. They loved coming in each day to see if another card had come. I was impressed with how much more we were able to get out of this project than the excitement of exchanging cards. We received an email from one of our partner schools in Australia stating they were going on summer vacation. This launched into a massive discussion about reasons for the seasons, the tilt of the earth, and the rotation of the sun. This is something not covered until 3rd and 4th grade, but what the perfect opportunity for it. I was so excited about the rich discussion we got from this project!

Graphing our results at the Christmas party with help from parents. You can see the cards we received on the board.

Flat Stanley Date Range: October 2-12, 2012 Subject: Reading, language arts, global perspectives GL Structure: Sequential Creations Objective: Students will write friendly letters using the appropriate format to write a letter to a student in another area (country or state) that accompanies the Flat Stanley that they have created. Common Core Standards: 3.RL.5 Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza; describe how each successive part builds on earlier sections. 3.W.4 With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. ISTE Standards: 2.C Develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures. 2.D Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems. Assessment: Formal content and format of friendly letter needs to be appropriate and relevant. Informal interactions with students at partner schools Resources: Flat Stanley literature selections for small groups Flat Stanley template Friendly letter template Partner school(s) http://www.flatstanley.com/ Technology Needed: Web connection to connect with partner school both before and after sending of the Flat Stanley. We will Skype to share what Stanley has done at each of the locations he visits. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Anticipatory Set: Students will watch the following YouTube video to introduce the Flat Stanley project. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k4fy7GsSSE Input: Teacher will guide discussion of the Flat Stanley project seeing if any of the students have read a Flat Stanley book before and if they know the story of Flat Stanley. Since we will not be reading the original Flat Stanley book, we will discuss the story of Flat Stanley with input from the students that have already read the story. Grade Level: 3

Guided Practice: Students will be broken into small groups that will each read a different Flat Stanley Adventure story. Over the course of the first 3 days students will read the story with guided group discussions on the story and the adventure of Stanley. Check for Understanding: Students will complete a jigsaw activity with members of different groups so that all students have a general understanding of each story that was read during the week. Anticipatory Set: Teacher will then introduce the partner classroom(s) and explain that we will be sending our Stanleys to each other so that Stanley will be able to see another culture and school. *Pending* - teachers of each class will record a short video introducing their class to the others. This video will be played to show the students the classroom that their Stanley will be sent to. Input: Teacher will teach students format for writing friendly letters using proper format. Teacher to emphasize that letters need to include information from the story about Flat Stanley as well as something about themselves. Guided Practice: Students will write a letter to the partner class as well as design the Flat Stanley to go along with the letter. Teacher will then mail letters to other classrooms. Closure: Two weeks later the classes will meet on Skype to share the adventures of the Stanleys in the exchange classroom.

Flat Stanley Project Outcomes I chose this project because I was suppose to teach Flat Stanley during the month of October when I was teaching 3rd grade. However, I was moved to 2nd grade at another school during the first few weeks of school. Since we are just now getting into chapter books, I have plans to still read this story and participate in the project in April after our standardized testing is complete.

Tulip Project Date: November 2012 through Spring 2013 (exact date TBD) Subject: Mathematics GL Structure: Database creation Objective: Students will work with students at a school in a different part of the world to compare climates and the impact that they have on tulip (or other flower) growth over the course of several weeks. Results will be reported in a graph. Common Core Standards: 3.MD.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step how many more and how many less problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. 3.MD.4 Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data my making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units whole numbers, halves, or quarters. ISTE Standards: 1.D Identify trends and forecast possibilities. 4.B Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project. 4.C Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. Assessment Formal students will create bar, picture, and line plot graphs to show data collected from experiment. Informal observation of the students ability to work with a peer in another class to identify causes for similarities and differences in data. Resources: Seeds/bulbs for tulip (or other flower variety as determined by teachers) along with tools and supplies necessary for growing plants in adequate conditions Graphing paper Partner school http://media.iearn.org/projects/daffodilsandtulips Technology Requirements: Web connection to connect with partner school to communicate progress throughout the duration of the project. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Anticipatory Set: (November) Students will review life cycle of a plant (taught in 2nd grade). Teacher will then instruct students that they will be planting tulips (or other flower) at the same time as a school in another part of the world. They will then plant tulip bulbs and discuss that they will not grow until spring because they are dormant for the winter. Grade Level: 3

Input: (Early Spring) Teacher will instruct on measurement using rulers to the nearest quarter and half inch. Teacher will also instruct on the uses of graphs as well as the various types of graphs that students will use throughout the project. Guided Practice: Students will practice measuring and graphing results in a variety of situations and on a variety of objects as part of the mathematics units on both measurement and data collection. Independent Practice: (Mid-Spring) Students will apply knowledge of measurement and graphing to the Tulip Project by measuring and recording the data pertaining to the growth of the tulip. Since they learned about and graphed weather in 2nd grade, they will also graph weather throughout the spring starting on March 21, 2013 (first day of Spring) and continue throughout the duration of the project. Throughout the project, students will constantly be sharing information via class blog and Google Docs. Closure: At the conclusion of the project, partner classes will meet via Skype to discuss the overall results of the project.

Tulip Project Outcomes This project was very specific to 3rd grade so I did not complete it since I was moved to 2nd grade after the start of the school year. I did recommend it to my team of third grade teachers to complete.

The project will be ongoing until all tulips and daffodils bloom, around May. Contributions: Dedicated to building connections between students and their teachers, learning about what affects plant growth, and peace! The Daffodil and Tulip Project is carried on in honor of the project's cofacilitator, someone filled with light and laughter, Amy Dwyer, who passed away on October 5, 2011. Title: Daffodil and Tulip Project Summary: Students in different parts of the world plant bulbs together and collect data on various parameters (latitude, longitude, sunlight, temperature etc.) and track when they blossom Description: Classrooms around the world choose Daffodil and/or Tulip bulbs to plant during the same week in November. Students will be asked to collect temperature data throughout the experiment and report to the group in addition they will report when the blooms appear etc. Teachers will find that this project can be used to teach many skills for many age levels. We are hoping for much discussion in the forums while we are waiting for the blooms. Students will have opportunities to use math skills (graphing, converting metric to English or the reverse, Temperature conversions F to C and the reverse, etc.) practice science skills (hypothesizing what effects bloom date, collecting data, comparing and analyzing data, etc.) appreciate geography and culture (learning about the other parts of the world as the students share their similar projects), Language Arts, (as students write to each other about their experience, some teachers are planning to use this project to help teach English as a second language classes), Creative Arts (we are finding connections in the arts to daffodils and tulips that can be shared as well). The project can be as involved or as simple as your class needs it to be.
