Course Content:
Welcome to Earth & Space Science!
This class is all about the connections between the Earth, Space and our everyday life. Of all the sciences,
Earth Science is the most fascinating to study. It answers questions about space and the origins of our
Universe, and about why our world looks the way it does, and how man uses the Earth to make our lives more
comfortable, and more dangerous. We will learn about the connections between the Earth’s systems and our
lives in this class.

“Always Be Learning!”
I have no doubt that we will have a fantastic time while we master this challenging material, meet my high
expectations and grow as a community of learners. There is no more valuable thing to learn in life than how
to always be learning.
Assessment:
“Learning requires hard work; there are no shortcuts”
In this class students will be given several different ways to demonstrate learning, not just tests and quizzes.
Every effort will be made to be sensitive to the most effective ways to assess what learning has taken place,
including make-up assignments, exam and quiz retakes, special projects and alternative assessments.
Class Requirements:
“Be prepared for the Learning”
Online Interactive Notebook: In this class you will learn to be organized. You will keep all your class notes
in an Interactive Science Notebook. I will provide this notebook for you, and you must bring it to class every
day. Research clearly says that students who organize their notes, labs and activities study more efficiently,
do better on exams and learn more. So welcome to the world of the Interactive Science Notebook.

Textbook: This course has an online textbook, title CK-12 Earth and Space Science WUHSD.

Grading:
“It’s all about the points; earn them every day and don’t give up!”
The grading in this course is on a straight point system. There are roughly 1000 points per semester, and a
percentage system is used to determine final grades
90% = A Students can retake a test any time during
80% = B the semester to improve their grade! You
70% = C will be given the average of your two
60% = D scores!
The breakdown for points is roughly as follows: Most of your grade is based on
Assessments: 20% (tests, quizzes, pop quizzes) the work we do online
Assignments: 20% (homework, classwork) everyday. Good attendance +
Labs, Activities and Notebook: 20% great effort = learning!
Participation (Zooms, check-ins, and Discussions): 40%

Make up policy: Students can make up work that is missed by during the end of day collaboration time .
Every effort will be made to give full credit for work that is missed for valid reasons. Tests and quizzes can
be retaken once for improved credit at any time.
Attendance
Online class attendance is extremely important in this class. If you attend class and do the work required
while you are there your grade is greatly improved. My job is to make this a class something you do not want
to miss! Your job is to make sure that you take your education seriously, and get to class every day.
Teachers at Pioneer High School are not required to give make up points for work done during an unexcused
absence. This will be true of daily classwork, activities and homework in my class.

Online Class Expectations and Conduct:

2. Follow directions
3. Respect others and respect objects in the classroom.
4. Respect the LEARNING! (It’s why we are here)
5. Stay engaged (online attendance can be distracting at times to stay focused and engaged in our
online learning.

Consequences: 1. Verbal/online warning

2. Conference with student and a phone call home
3. Referral to administration; leave class. (Come back ready to learn!)

If you do well in this class, perform extremely well or go through a huge improvement, I will call home and
notify people in the office about how well you are doing! Remember, it is all about learning in my classroom
and when I learn that you are doing well, I will get very noisy and happy about it!

Earth and Space Science Syllabus Return Sheet

Your first homework assignment is to make sure that you go through the syllabus with your parents and have
them sign this sheet. You will get 5 points for returning this slip the first night. After that you will get one
point less credit each day.

I have read the syllabus for this class with my student and we agree to these rules and terms of the Earth and
Space Science course. I understand that if my student is having significant trouble in the class I can call Mr.
Gonzalez to discuss the situation, just like if Mr. Gonzalez is having an issue with my student, he will call me.
