Drilling & Completion Practices Manual Milling Junk

Practices Nr: MI02 Date: 21 May 13 Milling Junk: General notes:

IPM

Page: 1 of 1 DCOM 3220

Periodically spud to pound junk down to bottom of the hole, where it can be more effectively milled. If torque increases suddenly then junk is alongside the mill. Spud mill to free the tool. Never mill too long. Pick up mill periodically and rotate to bottom to ensure a new wear pattern is developed and that the mill wears evenly. When milling keep a record of the following parameters very 100 mm milled: progress, weight on mill, torque, rpm, pump pressure, circulation rate. Note any relevant observations.

Milling Junk in Open Hole: The mill O.D. should be 1/2" (3.18 mm) to " (6.35 mm) less than the open hole diameter. Use at least 4.5 kdaN of drill collars. Run one or more junk subs above the mill. Make sure that the junk sub's neck is strong enough to withstand repeated spudding.

Milling Junk Inside Casing: The mill O.D. should be approximately the same as drift I.D. of the casing. When spudding only pick up string 0.5 - 1 m. If available, run a non-rotating stabilizer above the mill.
