Plant Tropism: BROAD BEAN EXPERIMENT

By Sam Mohammed Partners: Rankine, Gianni, Josh Aim: The aim is to determine if the seed will germinate and grow in the same direction as the seed planted with the germinating seed when it is upside down. Hypothesis: I predict that seed will germinate all over the bottle and doesnt grow up or down. Materials: Broad beans 1.25L soft drink/water bottle (empty and clean) Paper towel Soil Water

- smells rotten - bean has opened

Q1. Both of the seeds didnt grow properly for the first few days because on the first day we drowned it. Then as it started to grow, only the bean that was faced upright grew. Im not sure about the other one but it definitely did not grow. Q2. Yes because the theory of tropism is how a plant responds in a negative and positive environment. The negative was that one of the beans was germinating against gravity and the positive was that the other bean germinated properly. Q3. One of the variables was possibly how big the bean was. If it were bigger it possibly would have affected the results. The bean may have germinated more or less depending on how big or small the bean. Another would have been the bottle we used. If we used a bigger or smaller bottle, then there might have been a different result. We may have had to put more or less soil in the bottle so the bean might have grown more or less.

If we put it in the sun, the plant would have used photosynthesis. It then could have produced more food than it could have under a light.

Conclusion Q1. Yes because the aim was for the bean to germinate in the same direction as the other bean that was placed properly.
