Mushroom Growing

Practical

Date 09/01/23

Activity Planting of Mushroom ( Oyster)

Tools/ requirements: Buckets (with holes), soaking

Drums, substrate (cotton)

Hulls ) dark room, spown/

Seed, hydrating time, Bleach.

Method

Step – Soaking of cotton hulls and in water mixed with hydrated lime and bleach.

Step 2: Drain the water from the substrate.

Step 3: disinfect the plant buckets.

Step 4: Actual planting

a) Put a layer of 5cm thickness of substrate.


b) Take a handful of spawn of seed and sprinkle evenly on the top surface of the layer of 5cm.
c) Repeat the process until the bucket is full.

Aims and Objectives: Store the seeded buckets

In a dark room for up to 3 weeks at most

Activity: Observation of the planted buckets after 3 weeks

Tools: knapsack sprayer.

Method: spray the pins of mushroom that have sprouted from the holes using a knapsack sprayer so as
to spread humidity in the dark room

Activity: ttarvesting of the mushroom.

Tools ttarvasting buckets, a scissors.

Method: twist off the mature of fruit mush room from the bucket holes and place in the harvesting
buckets. Take buckets to the sorting or packing table. Pack the mushroom in 200g punnets which are
ready for sale or consumption.

Conclusion: Mushroom is a highly nutritive food which requires high stardust of hygiene. It contains unti
– cuncer properties controls blood pressure, diabetes, regulates colesteio levels, eliminated vitamin D
deficiency. It is also an immunity boaster building of strong bones. Protects the heart from
cardiovascular diseases

Planting of beans (field beans)

Variety Phaseolus Vulgaris

Day 1

Activity: land preparation

Tool hoes

Method: Digging with hoes. Breaking of clods of having a fine tittle.


Day 2
Date: 15/05/23

Activity Planting of the beans.

Tools: hoes, hosepipe

Method: Digging holes. We made holes which were 2.5cm deep and applied a basal dressing (fertilizer)
of compound D. After planting we colered the holes. We used a spacing of 45cm by 10cm. We then
irrigate the beams using a hosepipe

Date: weed control

Tools:

Method: We visited the garden and observed that there were some weeds mechanical weed control to
remove the weeds. We cultivated in between throws. This had also an advantages of loosening the soil.
An improved aeration and water penetration.

Activity: Pest control

Tool: knapsack sprayer, malathion, face mask, hand gloves protective clothes.

Methods An observation was discovered that ophids were attacking our bean plant. We mixed a spray of
500g malathion to 5 of water and sprayed the bean plants. After a period of one week signs of the
aphids had disappeared

Activity: harvesting: we have completed 95 days from the day of planting and our beans are showing
signs of maturing eg the leaves have started to turn into yellow and they almost dry off. The pods turn
yellow and some start turn to shatter

Tool: Buckets and sacks.

Method: We handpicked the pods and dried them for two weeks and threshed them and winnowed to
separate the beans from the chaff.

Conclusion: beans is a very important source of protein and also be used in soil production.
Practical 3

Date: 06/06/23

Activity: The growing of onion (texas grono)

Tool: Hoes, garden fork, hosepipe, seedlings.

Method: We dig and the clods of our onion bed we transplant our bulblets from the nursery bed after 8
weeks from sowing we broadcasted compound S to improve the soil ph. We spaced each seedling at a
space of 5 to 5cm within rows and 30cm between rows we watered 20m weekly from 8 to 10 weeks

Activity weed management. We have noticed that the weeds have been affecting the growth of the
bulbs of the onion hence we need to eradicate the weeds using a herbicide as this does not affect the
bulb of the onion

Tools: knapsack sprayer, fusillade, super ronster (herbicide.

Method: We mixed the herbicide the herbicides at a rate of 500ml to 21 of water and spread randomly
on the onion bed. After a period of one and a half weeks, the weeds began to unit

Conclusion: The herbicide that we used was a selective herbicide which targeted the weeds that were
disturbing the plant.
Day 3
Date 19/06/23

Activity: insect pest management. We observed that our onion had been infected by cutworms. They
were chopping the base of the plant which would cause it to wilt or die

Tools: knapsack sprayer, karate (insecticide).

Method: Mixed our karate at a ratio of 500g to 2L of water and sprayed on our onion beds
Day 4
Date: 24/06/23

Activity: harvesting

Tools:

Method: We observed that the top onion were wilting and collapse hence we decided to harvest our
onion. Firstly we needed to lightly irrigate the soil so that it is easy to pull out the onion from the soil.
We kept the onion in a low temperature and low humidity

Planting of a leafy vegetable (rape)
