Motors
Torque Curves
Have one for each motor you are using

RPMs vs. Torque vs. Current vs. Efficiency Drive Train vs. Accessory Motors
How do you decide? What will be important for your application?

Your motors will determine what you need your gearbox to

Using a Torque Curve

Determine your end loads and RPMs
Required torque Required RPM

Work those back through your gearbox to what you need at an input.
Apply efficiency - allows more realistic look.

Divide amount of torque per motor in gearbox. Find that torque on the graph then the RPM associated with the curve. Match the RPM at the required Torque to the RPM that you need for your gearbox.
If the Curve RPM is greater than the required RPM youre design will work at the desired speed. If not then you will need to either live with that speed or

Types of Gears
Spur (90-99 %) Bevel (90%) Helical (80-90%) Worm (60-80%)

Gearboxes Gear Ratios

Gearboxes are used to transform a set speed and torque from a motor to what you need, based on your application
Gears or sprockets are the way this is done Use the ratio from the input to the output

Must keep similar specs between Gears, only alter diameter/# of teeth

Features to compare (apples to apples)

Pitch diameter (diameter at the point of contact between the gear set) Outside Diameter # of teeth

Gearboxes Preliminary Design

Determine your inputs (speed, torque)
What the motors give you

Determine your outputs

What you need the motors and gearbox to do From Physics!

Outputs/Inputs is the ratio required.

Is it better to be too fast or have too much torque?

Determine what combination of gears and sprockets you need

Gearboxes Geometric Layout

The distance between the center of the mating gears is critical for the gears to mesh properly. The center distance is determined by the Pitch Diameters of the gears.
Use the sum of the Pitch Diameters of each gear to find the center distance.

Then just make it all fit
