Syllabus: KBSR Year 5 Topic: Using contextual clues (guessing meaning) Duration: 30 minutes

1.0 Goal: Students will increase their understanding in guessing the meaning of words in the story. 2.0 Objectives: 2.1 Terminal objectives: Students will be able to guess the unknown words correctly. 2.2 Enabling objectives: I. II. III. Students will analyze the character based on the words given by matching it. Students will search the antonym words in the worksheet given. Students will write simple sentences from the words given in the word search exercise. 3.0 Teaching Materials Short story The Elves and the Shoemaker Worksheet Word Search 4.0 Procedures: 4.1 Set Induction (3 minutes) 4.1.1 4.1.2 Teacher asks students to tell one of his or her favorite short story. Teacher repeats the activity with another two students.

4.2 Using contextual clues in the short story (18 minutes) 4.2.1 Teacher reads page by page to the students (The Elves and the Shoemaker) 4.2.2 4.2.3 4.2.4 4.2.5 Teacher asks the students whether they like the short story. Teacher distributes a worksheet to each student. Teacher explains instruction of the activity. Teacher asks students to carry out the activity.

4.3 Class Exercise (6 minutes) 4.3.1 4.3.2 4.3.3 4.3.4 Teacher distributes class worksheet. Teacher asks students to read the instruction and carry out the task. Teacher goes around making sure that everyone is doing the task. Teacher discusses the answers.

4.4 Extra Class work Assignment 4.4.1 Teacher asks students to write simple sentences based on the words given in the word search activity. 4.5 Closure (3 minutes) 4.5.1 5.0 Evaluation The terminal objective will be evaluated as the students give answers to the exercise given. Enabling objective (I) will be evaluated when the students listen and analyze the characters of short story entitled The Elves and the Shoemaker. Enabling objective (II) will be evaluated when students search the antonyms in the worksheet given. Enabling objective (III) will be evaluated when the students write the simple sentences. Teacher stresses on the moral values of the story and how it can apply in daily life.
