The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) is a huge, powerful predator that can be found in North America, Europe and Asia. Grizzlies have a large hump on their backs and sharp long claws. Grizzlies are solitary animals but they do gather in large numbers by rivers when the salmon swims upstream to spawn (lay their eggs). Grizzlies, also called brown bears, feed mainly on nuts, fruit, leaves and shoots but will also eat rodents, deer and elk. During the winter, grizzly bears hibernate for 5 8 months which is why they must eat a lot of food in the summer so they can survive. Female grizzlies give birth when they are still hibernating in their den. There are usually two cubs in a litter and they are born blind and hairless. They snuggle into their mother's fur for warmth and start to feed on her milk. When the mother has woken up from her long sleep, she leaves the den with her babies. Mountain lions and wolves are predators of young bear cubs but mother grizzly bears are very protective of their young so they usually survive. Cubs will stay with their mothers for 3 years until they are ready to fend for themselves.
