Standard IV: The special education teacher understands and applies knowledge of the characteristics and needs of students with disabilities (mild to moderate mental retardation, emotional/behavioral disorders, and learning disabilities) associated with: 1.1.1. Cognitive, physical, cultural, social, environmental, psychological, and emotional needs of individuals with and without disabilities (4.3k). 1.1.2. The educational implications of various disabilities (4.8k). Artifact Description This work sample was completed in EDSP 5730 as part of the course requirements. In the artifact I identified major laws that have changed the world of special education and the court cases as well as ruling that led up to the law being passed. Relationship to NBPTS Standards This artifact demonstrates knowledge of two Middle Childhood/Generalist Standard(s). I. Understanding Students This artifact represents my ability to understand how all students learn. VI. Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Fairness Equity and fairness are represented for students with special needs. Background of Artifact While creating this artifact, I had researched several different court cases and laws that have affected special education. The IDEA standards are what guide educational laws in regards to special education. By identifying court cases that established the IDEA standards, I have been able to understand and comprehend the depth and meaning to the IDEA principles. Reflection on Learning Demonstrated in this Work Sample From completing this assignment I have learned more of the bass of the educational system in regards to special education and the laws that govern it. This artifact will affect my classroom by allowing me to implement modifications and accommodations in the least restrictive environment for my special education students. I have benefited from this artifact by learning the reason to our methods. I understand much more of the special education lingo and why the laws that are in place exist, and how they affect my classroom.
