Immigrant Country of Origin: India

1) Number of immigrants/refugees coming into Minnesota over the last 20 years:

Roughly 22,678 immigrants from India have arrived to Minnesota over the past 20 years. This value was found by taking the population given in 2010 from minnesota compass and subtracting off the population of Indian immigrants prior to 1990.

2) Organizations in Minnesota that serve those populations health and social needs:

Indian immigrants are usually very accepting to western medical practices hence they utilize public hospitals and the public health system1. This population tends to be more susceptible to coronary heart disease (3 times the national average)1. Other resources that are available to the Indian population as far as health wise include SEWA-AIFW which stands for Sewa (means service in Hindi) Asian Indian Family Wellness.2 This organization is heavily involved in bettering the health of Asian Indians especially those of that are in crisis or the most vulnerable. This organization is also involved in a lot of outreach2. As far as social needs, many Indian immigrants try to preserve their cultural roots so they get involved in some kind of Indian organizations that promote cultural events such as celebration of their holidays and festivals. An example of an organization that meets this social/cultural need is the Indian Association of Minnesota which holds cultural events such as dances, prayers, and feasts.3

3) Resources and articles that talk about your population immigration or existence in Minnesota

I got all of my information from the sources listed above. Other sources that were useful, but I used in the power-point slides due yesterday were these two. These two sources basically outlined the growing communities of Asian Indians and some of the challenges and resources available to them.
