    Imagine this conversation in English: Did you give the book to Tom? Yes, I gave the book to Tom. When did you give the book to Tom? I gave the book to Tom yesterday. Did Tom read the book? Yes, Tom read the book. Did Tom like the book? Yes, Tom liked the book. When will Tom return the book? Tom will return the book tomorrow.

    What will the two speakers eventually do?

    Did you give the book to Tom? Yes, I gave IT to HIM.

    What did you give? The book. The book is the Direct Object in the sentence. It was DIRECTLY affected by the action of the verb. IT substituted for THE BOOK. IT is the DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN.

    To identify the direct object, you ask What?/ Qu? about the verbWhat do you give? Qu das?

    The only difference between Spanish and English here is the fact that Spanish has gender, so you have to know if el libro [or whatever is being substituted for] is masculine or feminine. me--me te--you nos--us

    Using your notes and the vocab list, the groups should compile a list of at least 5 sentences, en espaol. The more the better. Work together or divide up the work amongst yourselves. Hand these in when you have at least 5 (the more, the better). Youll see these again in some form next week!
