Title: To Prepare Boric Acid by Acidic hydrolysis

of Borax(decahydrate).
Chemical required:
1) Apparatus Sulphuric acid Conc.: 12ml . 2)Borax: 60g. 3)Barium chloride (T.S).

Apparatus required:
1)Beaker/Conical flask 500ml.2) Buchner funnel assembly , 3)Glass rods, 4)Bunsen flame, 5)Filter paper.

Theory:
When an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid is added to a boiling borax solution, boric acid forms.

Na2B4 O7 + H2SO4 + 5H2O Na2SO4 + 4H3BO3 (Boric acid)

Procedure:
Weigh accurately about 60g of borax and put into a 500ml beaker . Then add about 160ml of water. Boil the mixture. To the boiling mixture add a mixture of 12ml of sulphuric acid and 60ml of water. Boil for few minutes. The hot liquid is filtered and set aside to crystallize. The boric acid is then filtered off until free from sulphate. Test the washed solution with barium chloride(T.S.).

Fold the boric acid between a filter paper to absorb the excess water and allow to dry at ordinary temperature or over silica gel until dry. It is hygroscopic hence keep protected from moisture.
