Chem Homework

1) Sodium Sulphate(titration)
2NaOH(aq) + H2SO4(aq) Na2SO4(aq) + 2H2O(l)

 To burette, add 1M H2SO4 solution.

 Pipette 25 ml of 1M NaOH solution into a conical flask.
 Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the flask containing NaOH solution.
 Add H2SO4 from the burette slowly to the NaOH solution until the phenolphthalein
changes to colourless.
 Record the volume of H2SO4 added at end-point.
 Repeat the titration WITHOUT indicator and add the exact volume of H2SO4
determined at end-point in Step 4.
 Collect the mixture in the flask and heat gently to remove excess water.
 Allow the mixture to cool and crystallise.

2) Zinc Sulphate (Acid + insoluble base)

ZuO(s) + H2SO4(aq) ZnSO4(aq) + H2O(l)

 Add the ZuO solid to the H2SO4 in a beaker.

 Stir until no more ZuO can dissolve. This is to ensure complete reaction and to get the
maximum amount of ZuSO4 possible.
 Heat if necessary.
 Filter to remove the excess ZuO solid.
 Collect the filtrate and heat gently to remove excess water.
 Allow the filtrate to cool and crystallise.

3) Copper (II) Chloride (Acid + Metal Carbonate)

CuCO3(s) + HCL(aq) CuCl2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

 Add the CuCO3 solid to the HCL in a beaker.

 Stir until no more CuCO3 can dissolve. This is to ensure complete reaction and to get the
maximum amount of CuCl2 possible.
 Heat if necessary.
 Filter to remove the excess CuCO3 solid.
 Collect the filtrate and heat gently to remove excess water.
 Allow the filtrate to cool and crystallise.
