Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A. Weigh empty beaker, put a scoop of aluminum powder into beaker, weigh again, subtract to find the weight of aluminum powder B. Empty beaker- 32.156g; with aluminum powder- 35.540g; aluminum powder- 3.384 g C. 3.384g of Al*(1mol Al/26.90g Al)*(6.02*1023 atoms Al/1 mol Al)= 7.573*1022 atoms Concluding Statement: There are 7.573*1022 atoms in a teaspoon of Aluminum powder 2. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A. Weigh empty beaker, get a spoonful of Iron powder, weigh, subtract to find weight of iron powder B. Empty beaker- 32.147g; with iron powder 42.402g; iron powder alone- 10.255g C. (10.255g Fe/1 spoonful)*(1 mol Fe/55.85g Fe)=0.1836mol/spoonful. 1/0.1836=5.446 spoonful's of Fe powder to have one mole. Concluding Statement: You need 5.446 teaspoons of Iron to have 1 mole 3. Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil) A. Find area of zinc, weigh, calculate atoms B. 9cm2, 1.032g C. 1.032g*(1mol Zn/65.38g)*(6.02*1023/1 mol)*(2/9)= 2.11*1021 atoms in 2.00cm2 of zinc metal Concluding Statement: There are 2.11*1021 atoms of Zinc in a piece of 2cm2
