Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A. Measure 1 teaspoon of aluminum Find the mass of one teaspoon of aluminum powder Use dimensional analysis to convert to atoms B. (Beaker + Aluminum) - Beaker= Mass of Aluminum 31.68-28.39=3.29g of aluminum

C. ,

3.29 grams*(1 mole/26.98 gram) (6.02x10^23 atoms /1moles)= 7.34x10^22 atoms

Concluding Statement: There are 7.34x10^22 atoms of aluminum in 3.29 grams of aluminum powder 2. Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil)

A. 1. Measure the dimensions (base and height) of the zinc foil 2. Mass the zinc foil on a scale 3. Use dimensional analysis to find how many atoms of zinc are in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc foil B. Dimensions of zinc metal: 3.00 x 2.95 cm2

Mass of zinc metal: 1.05 g C. 2.00 cm2 Zn x 1.05g Zn/8.85 cm2 Zn x 1 mol Zn/65.38g Zn x 6.02 x 1023 atoms Zn/1 mol Zn= 2.18 x 1021 atoms Zn Concluding Statement: There are about 2.18 x 1021 atoms of zinc in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal

3. Determine what length of copper wire needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper.

A. 1. Mass the copper wire 2. Measure the length of the same copper wire 3. Use dimensional analysis to calculate to find out how long the copper wire should be to provide 2.00 mol of copper

B. Length of copper wire: 12.57 cm of Copper Mass of copper wire: 2.35 g

C. 2.00 mol Cu x 63.55g Cu/1 mol Cu x 12.57 cm Cu/2.350g Cu x 1 m Cu/100 cm Cu= 6.98 m Cu

Concluding Statement: The copper wire would have to be 6.98 meters to provide 2.00 moles of copper
