CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND

RESEARCH CONTEXT

Stoichiometry is the study of the quantitative relationships or ratios between

two or more substances undergoing a physical change or chemical change or a

chemical reaction (Helmenstine A.M., 2019). Experiments involving stoichiometric

principles is done to analyze the amounts of reactants, leftover reactants, products,

and by-products in a chemical equation. Often, stoichiometry calculations deal with

the mass or volumes of products and reactants. Moreover, stoichiometry is used for

balancing chemical equation, which is an important aspect of chemistry (Gudzuadze

M., 2022).

The use of stoichiometric principles results in determining which ions is

formed in the reaction between the two samples used. Hence, it is used in this

experiment to determine the ions formed in the reaction of iron and copper (II)

sulfate solution. In the reaction, iron will be the limiting reagent which means that it

will all be used up in the reaction. While the copper (II) sulfate will be in the excess,

therefore not all of it will be used up in the reaction.

RESEARCH AIMS

The experiment will start with the heated copper (II) sulfate solution being added to

the iron powder. Copper (II) sulfate solution is warm, making the reaction occur

almost instantaneously. This experiment aims to know if there will be occurrence of

2

reaction once copper (II) sulfate solution is added to iron powder. Additionally, it also

aims to know if there is a 1:1 ratio between the iron and the copper by calculating

the number of moles of iron that reacts and the number of moles of the copper

produced.
CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

In this experiment, stoichiometric principles will be used to obtain the

appropriate equation between the reaction of iron metal and copper II sulfate

solution. And it is used to determine which reaction is more dominant compared to

another one by examining the reaction between iron copper II sulfate solution.

PROCEDURE

First, weigh the empty beaker, then add 1.00 gram of iron powder, and weigh

it again. On the other empty beaker, put 30 milliliters of copper sulfate (COSu4)

solution using the graduated cylinder and heat gently until it gives off fume. After

that, gently pour the heated copper sulfate solution into the beaker containing iron

powder. Stir it until the iron powder submerged and turns to copper. Then, wash the

copper with distilled water and decant it, do this three times and for the fourth time,

wash it with acetone and decant afterwards. After draining, the copper’s color turned

into reddish brown. After which, dry the copper; gently heat the beaker containing

the copper. And let it cool down, then weigh it.

CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

We observed that some of the powder immediately sank, while some moved

on or near the surface of a liquid without sinking. However, swirling the mixture

made the remaining floating iron powder sink. Due to that, the sediments begin to

create a pile of iron powder that is now copper. Below is the table that shows the

given and calculated data of the reaction of iron with copper (II) sulfate.

Data Sheet of Reaction of Iron

with Copper (II) Sulfate

Data

Mass of empty beaker 66.657 g

Mass of iron used 1.036 g
Moles of iron used 0.0186 mol

Mass of beaker plus copper 67.693 g

Mass of copper formed 1.122 g

Moles of copper formed 0.0177 mol

Moles of Cu divided by 0.9459
moles of Fe

Reaction Equation: Fe + CuSO₄ = FeSO₄ + Cu

Limiting Reagent: Fe

Theoretical and Percentage 1.184 g CuSO4

Yield: 94.7365 %

The empty beaker weighs 66.657 grams. The iron powder used weighs 1.036

grams. By dividing the amount of iron used, which is 1.036 grams, by the molecular
5

weight of iron, which is 55.845 grams per mole, the number of moles of iron was

computed. The mass of the empty beaker, which is 66.657 grams, and the mass of

the iron, which is 1.036 grams, were added to get the mass of the beaker including

copper. 1.122 grams of copper were produced and weighed. By dividing the quantity

of copper created, which is 1.122 grams, by copper's molecular weight, which is

63.546 grams per mole, the moles of copper were determined. Moles of copper

divided by moles of iron was calculated to be 0.9459 moles. Copper sulfate has 0.3

moles while iron has 0.0185 moles. Iron is the limiting reactant since it has a lower

value than copper sulfate. Theoretically, 1.184 grams of copper sulfate were

produced, while the actual yield was 94.7365 percent.

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, one instance of a single substitution reaction, in which one

element "displaces" another from a compound, is the reaction between iron and

copper (ii) sulfate. To be "more active" than the displaced metal is to be able to

remove another element from a complex. Additionally, this single displacement

reaction between copper sulfate (CuSO4) and iron (Fe) let us learn more about how

stoichiometric principles operate to produce the correct equation between the

forenamed elements. Additionally, the state of the solution added has the potential to

completely alter an element's physical appearance in addition to other factors, such

as its physical look.

A 1:1 ratio between the mass of iron consumed and the mass of copper made

is acquired and displayed in the "Data Sheet of Reaction of Iron with Copper (II)

Sulfate," which was derived by calculating the number of moles of iron that reacts

and the number of moles of copper produced. The physical properties of a given

element may change, but the condition of the solution added may also entirely

convert the element to another element.

Questions

1. What is the purpose of using excess solution?

- The purpose of using the excess solution is to compensate for impurities and ensure

that one reactant fully reacts. This is financially efficient when one of the reactants is

very cheap. When one reactant is in excess, there will always be some left over.

2. In the experiment, which is the more active element or compound?

- Iron can displace copper from its salt solution. Therefore, iron is more reactive when

compared to copper.

3. What is the role of the acetone in the experiment?

- Acetone removes impurities without dissolving the copper sulfate.
