Procedure:

1. Five iron tablets were weighed accurately. The mortar and pestle was used to crush the
tablets. The crushed tablets were dissolved in 100mL of solution C in a 250mL beaker.

2. The solution was filtered in a 250mL volumetric flask to remove the outer coating of the
tablets. The beaker was thoroughly washed to ensure that all the iron is transferred to a
flask. Distilled water was added to make up the solution to the mark. The solution was
labelled as Solution D

3. 25mL of solution D was pipetted into a conical flask. 25mL of 1.0M Sulphuric acid was
added to Solution D. Solution D was then titrated with the 0.01M potassium manganate
(VII) solution in the burette.

4. Steps 1-3 were repeated until results were consistent.

Results:

Mass of Iron Tablets - 2.13g

Discussion:

In this experiment the percentage of iron (II) was found. This was done by titration. Titrations are
used to find the concentration of a solution by adding a solution of known concentration. First
the amount of moles of MnO4 - reacted with solution D was found. Then using the molar ratio the
2+
amount of moles of Fe in all five tablets was calculated. Using the moles the mass of Fe 2+ in
one tablet was calculated. The mass of Fe2+ was found to be 73.64 mg. IllHowever, according to
the producers, the mass of Iron in one iron tablet is 65 mg. The reason for this contradiction
between the experimental value and the value stated by manufacturers may be due to an error
during the titration process. For instance, the end point recorded may not have been the actual
end point of the reaction. Thus, the volume of KMnO4 used was inaccurate. Thus, causing the
calculations which followed to also be inaccurate.

Sources of Error:

1. Determining end point of titration. Experimenters may have different points of view on
the end point of titration.

2. Contamination of solutions used in the titrations can produce inaccurate results.

Limitations

1. The iron in the iron tablet is not in its pure form. Iron takes the form of Iron Sulphate in
the tablet. Hence, the amount of Iron present in an iron tablet cannot be directly
determined.

Recommendations:

1. In order for experimenters to appreciate that Iron tablets also contain Iron Sulphate,
students should test a solution containing the crushed iron tablets for Sulphate ions.

Conclusion:

In closing, based on the experimental values derived, the percentage of Iron (II) in one Iron
tablet was 17.27%. The percentage was greater than the advertised amount of iron present in
one tablet. This indicates that there was an error that affected the accuracy of the titration.
