Imperialism
Imperialism: When a stronger nation dominates a weaker nation politically, economically, and/or socially

Power NOT Size


Belgium = 11,787 sq mi Congo = 905,355 sq mi How is this possible?

Political
Examples of political: National defense (either military locations or alliance creation)

Economic
Examples of economic: cheap labor, natural resources, new markets

Social
Examples of social: language, religion, education, law

Early American Imperialism


Indian Removal Act of 1830
Removal of the Five Civilized Tribes of the Southern United States Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole All tribes were forced to move to Federal lands west of the Mississippi river Many tribes resisted leading to conflicts that resulted in thousands of deaths Additionally, the Cherokee removal became known as the Trail of Tears due to the immense hardships and death that went with their forced removal

Early American Imperialism


Mexican-American War 1846-1848
Followed the annexation Texas United States acquired the current states of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and parts of Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma This was also a result of the belief in Manifest Destiny in which people believed that God wanted the United States to stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean

Competition with Europe


By the late 1800s European countries actively colonize lands all over Asian and Africa As a result, European nations such as Britain, France, and Germany are growing incredibly powerful

It is 1896, should the US begin acquiring colonies? Yes Argument- The United States, if it is going to survive and compete economically and politically on a global scale must begin acquiring new colonies
