November 2013 President's Note

Greetings, October started out with my husband being laid off right before our family vacation to Disneyland. We peeled ourselves off the floor & had an awesome trip anyway, returning ready for a new beginning. But I must say, this is definitely a year I'll be happy to move on from even though I'm thankful for many sweet family moments! Halloween was a whole new event this year as Fiona was totally into the festivities. She walked for over 2 hours up & down hills, asking "just one more house!?" a zillion times. I finally convinced her to head home where she promptly pulled up her rainbow chair & watched every trick or treater arriving at our door. And it was so fun to see all the great costumes at Solvang the day before. I was back there last Friday to pick up pictures and they thanked us again for taking the time to bring smiles into their center. I'll be sending out an Evite soon with details about this years Family Giving. The MOMS Club Founder's Day Luncheon is next weekend so we'll have fun info to share at the November member meeting! I am ever thankful for all you wonderful ladies that make this club so great. Have a great day &

Book Club
This month, the book club is reading The Light Between Oceans by H.L. Stedman. We will meet on Wednesday, November 6. Summary From the Publisher: "After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a days journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a babys cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Toms judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them. M. L. Stedmans mesmerizing, beautifully written novel seduces us into accommodating Isabels decision to keep this gift from God. And we are swept into a story about extraordinarily compelling characters seeking to find their North Star in a world where

Directions 1. In a jar with a tight fitting lid, combine the oil, vinegar, sugar, parsley, salt and pepper. Cover and shake well. Refrigerate until use. 2. In a medium saucepan over medium low heat, cook and stir the almonds and sugar until the sugar is melted and the almonds are coated. Remove from heat, cool, and break apart. Store at room temperature until ready to serve salad. 3. In a large bowl, toss together the lettuce, celery, oranges, almonds and dressing until evenly coated, or serve dressing on the side. (This recipe makes a lot of dressing)
