Excesslimiting

In any chemical reaction, it is easy to run out of one or another reactant which has an impact on the amount of products that can result from a reaction
To solve these problems you must identify which of the reactants is going to run out first.
This is the limiting reagent The other is the excess reagent
Example: LEGO If you had three yellow blocks and four red blocks, you

could only make three yellow/red combinations because there is not enough yellow blocks to make four. The yellow block is the limiting reagent and the red block is the excess reagent

Limiting Reactant used up in a reaction determines the amount of product

Excess Reactant
added to ensure that the other reactant is completely used up cheaper & easier to recycle

GRAHAM CRACKERS

MARSHMALLOW

KRIM-STICK

Try this!
15 students from Galilei and Einstein enter the school. Everyone wants to eat Smores. Can we feed them all?

Try this!
You have 100 grams of Graham Crackers, 60 marshmallows and 5 krim-sticks.

Answer
No, we cant feed them all. But the Krimstick is the limiting reactant in this case because it limits the product (smores)

Limiting Reactant The limiting reactant is the one that yields the lower amount of product.

Limiting Reactant
1. Write a balanced equation. 2. For each reactant, calculate the amount of product formed. 3. Smaller answer indicates:
limiting reactant amount of product

Activity

Nuclear engineers use chlorine trifluoride in the processing of uranium fuel from powerplants. Cl2 + F2 ClF3

Activity

Cl2 + F2 ClF3 (a) Name the limiting reactant (b) When the reaction is run again with 0.750 mol of Cl2 and 3 mol of F2. What mass ClF3 will be prepared?

Activity

N2 H 4 + N 2 O4 N 2 + H 2 O
How many grams of nitrogen gas form when 1.00X10^2g of N2H4 and 2.00X10^2g of N2O4 are mixed?

Assignment
1.) Choose among the three to define (theoretical, actual or percent yield) 2.) What are the things that limit you in giving your fullest in life? 3.) Solve: How many g of aluminum sulfide can be prepared by the reaction of 10 g of Al and 15 g of S? How much of the non-limiting reactant is in excess?
