FORMATION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY
AND (DIS)CONTINUITY IN SERBIA
Summary
In this paper author analyzed formation and development
of Serbian political institutions and states throughout hi
story. In an introductory part of the paper the author sin
gled out some crucial events and persons that were decisi
ve for formation, development and (dis)continuity of Ser
bian national identity and statehood throughout history.
s crucial persons and events for settlement and forma
tion of political institutions in Serbia the author singled
out an early medieval period of formation of first Serbian
principalities, then the period from twentieth to sixteenth
century and some turbulent events in first half of the nine
teenth century. According to the author, these certain pe
riods were decisive for definition of national identity and
(dis)continuity of Serbian state. In following chapters the
author analyzed first historical archives and records on
ancient Serbs who had lived in the regions of ancient In
dia, the Baltic, the Black sea/Caspian lake region, Meso
potamia, northwestern and central Europe and the Car
pathian mountains all the way to the region of the valley
of the Danube river and the Balkan peninsula. Within the
analysis of formation of the ethno-genesis of the ancient
Serbs the author underlined their epigenetic, anthropolo
gical, morphological and cultural connection with modern
Serbs.

Resume
For purpose of defining formation of national and cultural
identity and the statehood of the Serbs throughout history
up to present age author of the paper analyzed first traces
of historical identification and construction of ethnic and
cultural identity of ancient Serbian people. For purpose
of clear and logical presentation of historical and anthro
pological background of the ethnic identity of the Serbs
the author started the analysis with a presentation of sig
nificant climatic, geophysical and morphological changes
that had occurred in Neolithic and Paleolithic age having

triggered long migrations of pre-historic human groups

and animals throughout Euro-Asian region. First traces
of ancient numerous Serbian people had been found in to
ponymy of the valleys of the rivers Indes and Ganges, the
Caucasus mountains, the Caspian lake, the Black Sea and
the basin of the rivers Volga, Don and Dnieper, the Car
pathian and Rhodope mountains, the valleys of the rivers
Nile, Tigris and Euphrates, ancient Greece, the Baltic,
central and northwestern Europe, the valley of the river
Danube and in the mountainous region south of the river
Danube on territory of Serbia of today as well as they ha
ve been found in various archeological sites, etymological
and ethnographic proofs and cultural customs and man
ners related to the abovementioned regions.
The author also presented the records on ancient Serbs
in sacred world texts and the archives of antic Greek and
Roman, Byzantine, Frankish, German and other world hi
storians and geographers. Elaboration of the matching
of epigenetic, anthropological, morphological and cultu
ral characteristics of the Serbs throughout history have
shown a linear historical line connecting ancient pre-hi
storic Serbs with the Serbs from the Antic Greece and Ro
man age and the Serbs from pre-medieval states (kneze
vina) on the territory of the Balkan peninsula up to the
Serbs living in current times.
In the text the author underlined some determinant histo
rical periods of territorial and cultural division of the Ser
bian people who had widely inhabited Euro-Asian region
in the process of their long migrations. The author also
underlined basic ethnic, linguistic, archeological and et
hnographic determinants marking a linear historical con
nection of ancient proto-Serbian (proto-Slavic) people
from their ancient habitats with the Serbs of today such
as the ancient Vinca letter and Old Serbian (Old Slavic)
language and letters and building of ancient Serbian ca
pitals and churches in the region of Raska in Serbia and
the missions of Christian educators the brothers Cyril and
Methodius among the Serbs in the ninth century. Within
the analysis of formation of national and cultural iden
tity in Serbia the author also underlined some important
historical persons such as ancient political, spiritual and
military leaders Serbo Makeridov (known also as Herac
lius or Asur), Alexander the Great, the Christian Saint
Andrew, the Roman emperors Licinius and Constantine,
Aetius, Ostroilo Svevladovic, Strojimir Vlastimirovic, the
Christian missionaries Cyril and Methodius, the founder
