SMART 7 (READING STRATEGY) Smart 7 is a set of reading strategies for standardized testing.

There are seven easy steps to follow. This strategy is great for students who have test anxiety or trouble focusing. Smart 7 can be apply to any form of short text with multiple choice responses. The first step is to read and box the title. This helps the student to identify the topic. Next, number the paragraph. Students can separate the information into chucks rather than one larger piece. Third steps is to read each paragraph. Stop and think about what we have read, then write 1 to 3 key words in the margin for each paragraph. This prompts the students to summarize as he or she reads instead of at the end. Step four is to read each question and underline the key words. The students can then match the key words of the question to the key words from each paragraph. Next read each answer and put symbols ( / , X ) beside each choice of answer. Here the student labels each possible answer to begin eliminating choices. Second last step is to prove your answer. Students should go back to the passage and find the details to support the first choice or eliminate a questioned choice. Last but not least, is to mark the answer.
