CHAPTER 6

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES

ADVANTAGES

1. Very high power-to-weight ratio, compared to reciprocating engines

In the manufacturing of this type of engine light material can be used as compared to the internal combustion engine , and also less number of components are used in this so these parameters makes a light weight engine, as in this engine complete combustion occurs so makes very high power production in comparison to the i.c engine.

2. Smaller than most reciprocating engines of the same power rating.

As these engine has very high power than reciprocating engine, so for same power rating the size of these type of engine became smaller

3. Moves in one direction only, with far less vibration than a reciprocating engine.
These type of engine have very less vibrations than the reciprocating engine because in these type no reciprocating motion takes and also there occur a continuous power generation.

4. Fewer moving parts than reciprocating engines

As there is no piston cylinder arrangement, no flywheel , no camshaft so this engine has a very less moving parts than piston engine.

5. Low operating pressures

In this engine there is no requirement of compressed airfuel engine and there is a continuous flow of fuel occur so the operating pressure are less than the piston engine.

6. Very less tear and wear

As in this engine there is no reciprocating motion takes place so these engine have very less amount of tear & wear.

7. less lubrication required due to less reciprocation parts.

this engine has very less number of reciprocating parts so very small amount of lubrication required in this .

8. Can run on wide variety of fuel

This engine can be run on any type of fuel liquid or gaseous.

9. high operational speed

This engine can be run at very high speed with minimum torque, because low inertia of the turbine shaft & blade.

10. low lubricating oil cost.

As there is a low lubrication required so lubrication cost becomes reduce in this.

DISADVANTAGE

1.Cost is very high 2.Less efficient than reciprocating engines at idle speed 3.Longerstartup than reciprocating engines 4.Less responsive to changes in power demand compared to reciprocating engines

6. High operation speeds. 7. Low lubricating oil cost and consumption
