REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM

Overview:- Regenerative braking is a unique technique that is used in EVs to capture

energy that the vehicle has due to its motion or, in other words, its kinetic energy that
would have been wasted when the vehicle decelerates or comes to a standstill while
braking.

Our Aim:-

1. Utilise this energy from brakes and store it in a separate battery.

2. Use this energy to run various components of vehicle apart from giving
that power to the wheels, running accessories, wipers, sunroofs, power
windows, etc.

Why this?

As we know regenerative braking is just the energy captured while the vehicle is
decelerating or when brakes are applied, so the power generated is not that high to
charge a bigger battery but when a smaller battery will be given that power it will charge
faster. So it is a pretty simple concept where we are using a separate battery for all
running other components of our Vehicle.

The vehicle need not to be an EV, because in today’s

market most hybrid vehicles are there which are equipped with batteries and motors apart
from Engines to increase the overall e ciency and mileage.

Cutting edge or Existing:- It is an existing technology.

Working Principle:-

Regenerative brakes work by reversing electric motors that propel a car. It works like a
generator and feeds energy back into the hybrid or electric system to help replenish a
little bit of range. These small boosts in battery range can accumulate and improve
e ciency over time when used regularly.

Components:- Brake drum, Friction lining, Controller, Electric Generator or DC motor,

Linking mechanism.

Application:- Stopping the vehicle, Running components, Accessories.

Advantages:- 1. Extends range.

2. Reduces Pollution.

3. Improves the e ciency of braking.

4. Reduces Wear and Tear.

5.Improvement in the conservation of energy.

Disadvantages:- 1.Impossible to recover all energy while decelerating from high

speeds because while decelerating quickly some of the energy has
to be transferred to heat.

2.As discussed with the driving conditions, the variation of torque will
cause ine ciencies and may damage the system as well.

3.The additional systems required to install and maintain increase the

cost of vehicle.

4.Regenerative Braking Motor for Electric Vehicles

Scopes in Future:-

As it is still in its initial phase and this technology is very

promising in terms of practicality, as it is showing great improvement in range of
vehicles without compromising the braking ability of the vehicle and is very useful in
places where braking is more applied such as descending a hill, just turn on the hill
descend control and the braking will generate the energy and charge the battery for
a better range and running of components too.

Cost of installation:- Around Rs 20,000/- for a single wheel so for a 4 wheeler it can
easily go for 50,000-70,000/-

Service and life:- It can easily last for 100,000 miles and then can be replaced. Only
Brakes need to be replaced not motor or other components.

E ectiveness:- It can easily restore 70% of the kinetic energy and put it back to the
battery. That energy is used as range extender of vehicle.

Last Longer and helps owner save on maintenance costs and provide
better fuel e ciency for hybrid vehicles, in hybrid vehicles the battery
hence keeps fully charged and hence the reliance on conventional
engines drops so overall reduces fuel consumption and money.
