Lesson 3 Lab: Pipetting and Self-Inflating Hydrogen Balloons

PART 1 Begin by viewing the following Thinkwell video 27.1.4 CIA Demonstration: Pipetting After you watch the above video, answer the questions below in sufficient detail: (a) (1 pts) What is a pipette and for what is it used? Answer: A pipette is a glass tube, open on both ends, used to transfer a specified volume of liquid from one flask or container to another using a bulb to draw the liquid up.

(b) (1 pts) What is the difference between a graduated pipette and a volumetric pipette, and what is the specific function of each? Answer: A volumetric pipette is used for a specific volume that is always the same (like the 20mL pipette in the video), while graduated pipettes are used for volumes that fall between the available volumetric pipettes. (c) (2 pts) What is the proper technique for using each of these instruments? What is the importance of the "meniscus" in this technique? Answer: The proper technique for using a pipette is to carefully compress the bulb and place it over the end, then draw the volume of liquid needed up into the pipette.. The importance of the meniscus is that when the lowest point of the meniscus reaches the fill line, yo have the necessary volume. (d) (1 pts) Give a specific example of how you could use a pipette (if one were available), in your own daily life, and explain which type of pipette you should use in your situation and why. Answer: While I cannot think of anything I could use a pipette for now, in a little over a month when I return home I could use a graduated pipette to measure and dispense the proper mix of concentrated infant formula to water.

PART 2 Please watch the following Thinkwell video: 3.3.4 CIA Demonstration: Self-Inflating Hydrogen Balloons After you watch the above video, answer the questions below in sufficient detail: (a) (3 pts) First, the instructor violated several safety rules in this video. List and explain/discuss at least (3) safety rules he violated. Answer: The instructor violated the following safety rules: 1) He was not wearing safety gear. This is inappropriate because any time you you are performing an experiment you should be wearing the proper safety gear. 2) He was eating during an experiment. This is inappropriate because there are numerous chemicals that has been or will be handling, and ingesting some of them could have serious consequences. 3) He left an experiment unattended. This is inappropriate because even if you know exactly what something is supposed to do, you can never be absolutely certain there is not some impurity that will cause an unexpected reaction. (b) (2 pts) Why did these balloons inflate? Write and discuss a balanced chemical equation for this reaction and use it to help explain your answer. Answer: (c) (2 pts) What remained in the last (4th) flask (the one with the green balloon) at the end of the reaction? Why? What does this demonstrate with regard to limiting reactant? Answer: A large portion of the magnesium ribbon remained in the flask. It remained there because the HCI was the limiting reactant as opposed to the magnesium in the first two flasks. This demonstrates that any of the substances can be a limiting reactant if the amount is restricted beneath the optimum ratio. (d) (2 pts) Why was the same amount of HCl kept in every flask? Why didnt the instructor vary those amounts as well? Answer: The same amount of HCI was kept in every flask to provide a constant in the demonstration. It would of made a simple demonstration much more complicated and difficult to understand to reach the same results if he had varied all ingredients.

(e) (2 pts) Why did the 3rd flask balloon (the red one) inflate more than the 1st flask balloon (the purple one)? Incorporate the concept of limiting reagent in your answer. Answer: The 3rd flask balloon inflated more than the 1st because it was the correct ratio. In the case of the first balloon, the magnesium was the limiting reactant, while the 3rd balloon had the proper amounts of both, so there was no limiting reactant. (f) (4 pts) Suppose you ran this same reaction (using the balloon setup as seen in the video) on your own with two different flasks. In Flask A, you reacted 1.65 g Mg with 0.136 mol HCl. In Flask B, you reacted 2.21 g Mg with 0.098 mol HCl. Which ballon will inflate the most? Explain (in detail) why. Answer: The balloon on Flask B would inflate he most because there is more of the limiting reactant, the Mg. Flask A only had a ratio of .068 mol Mg ( 1.65*(1/24.31)) to .136 mol HCI, while Flask B has .091 mol Mg to .098 mol HCI.
