When you speak, its called public speaking but when you convince, its called oratory.

Good morning to all present. I, Shreyas Kapur will deliver a speech on The Dying Art of Oratory The art to convince isnt something that is dying at all, in fact more and more people are willing to study this topic as a profession. As more and more people enter a capitalist driven society, marketing and selling has become the number one priority of companies. And it is not surprising that huge investments are made just on marketing. If we take the overused example of Apple, their motto is convincing people to buy their products rather than making good products. (apple fanboys are gonna kill me after this) All these examples, might not have any connection with oratory, but oratory and marketing has one thing in common convincing. Oratory is not dying but being replaced. Just as walking is being replaced by driving, and writing by typing, oratory is dying because of rapid advancement in technology. In the modern world, if one wants to convince someone about something, he would rather put up and advertisement than actually speak on a stage. People wont listen to a man speaking about Sensodyne Toothpaste or Vicco Vajradanti continuously for 2 minutes, but would rather watch a 10 second commercial of their favorite actor on a TV. Seeing an ad saying, Anubhav hai raftaar hai, phirse congress ek baar hai, is faster and more efficient than Sheila dixit ranting about Metro for 20 minutes. Who listens to We made the metro for 20 minutes? (Even though, none of it actually worked out) Oratory is an essential art and it being replaced is sad. But who is to blame for this change? It is humanity and their impatience, growing at an exponential rate. While Antonys speech from Julius Caesar we consider one of the best speeches, but it was only valid for his time, we can see a high school student yawing away on reading that. A person becomes a good orator when he keeps the audience engaged and prevents his audience from looking at their watches and thinking, When will this end. I know what you are thinking right now. Thank you!
