Course Competencies

1 Integrate strategies that support diversity and anti-bias perspectives.


Early childhood classrooms should be free of bias and prejudice. Anti Bias in math should mean all children should have an equal opportunity to explore and learn math, science, and social studies. All children have the capability to be taught and should be taught at their own pace, not the teachers. It should also not infringe on anyones rights or beliefs

Examine the critical role of play as it relates to math, science, and social studies.
Math, science, and social studies is useful and practical for all age groups. A teacher should know how to facilitate activites unique to their students that keeps children engages, learning, and having fun. M,S,&SS foster development in cognitive and critical thinking, fine and large motor development,social and emotional skills and creative expression. Things such as weights, blocks, and other hands on acitivities foster a love for math and learning in general. This creates a learning through play environment where a child learns these skills naturally.

Establish a developmentally appropriate environment for math, science, and social studies.
A M,S, & SS environment should be safe and secure to all children. All of the area should be age appropriate and cater to the needs of all children. Areas should have literature and labeled to encourage literary and language skills. The equipment should be sturdy and ready for a child to explore with their entire body. There should also be enough room to encourage parallel and cooperative play. A satisfactory M,S, & SS area will also challenege the children to think and learn as they play.

Develop activity plans that promote child development and learning.


All activity plans should promote child development and learning. Activity plan for math, science, and social studies should cater to the needs and abilities of your age group and specific classroom. Materials should be sturdy and age appropriate. Activity plan should be able to be assessed and incorporate the WMELS.

Create developmentally appropriate science activities.


Science activities should be developmentally appropriate. All materials should be sturdy and safe, Science plans should be age appropriate and be specific to your classroom. Science should also be culturally sensitive to all children. The activity plans should engage child and encourage developmental growth and curiousity. Plans should also hit several developmental domains and incorporate WMELS.
