SOL: Reading 3.5g,j Evaluation: Group Discussions/Monitoring

Students will construct their own knowledge of inferencing through a step by step investigation of pictures and a story to infer the true meaning

Materials: Encounter: by Jane Yolen Copy of words and pictures in book for groups Elmo document camera Pencils

Procedures: 1. I will tell the students I am going to be reading a story out loud (Just read it straight through) 2. Tell the students we will be getting into groups and they have to write down things about the picture (what do you think it could be about? What do you see and what could you say about it? Why? What evidence in the text and your experiences tells you that? 3. Afterward I will number off the students 1-6 4. Give students 10 minutes to talk about their pictures and what they could really mean 5. Have students come up and talk about what they found. 6. After each group is done sum up all of their points and tell them about what the book is really about (Columbus)

7. Tell them what reading strategy they used (inferencing) tell them that just like using context clues to draw conclusions, Inferencing is almost the same thing. 8. Inferencing uses clues from the text like puzzle pieces, but also adds your own experience to help you infer what is happening or what the book is about
