JANUARY SEMESTER 2014 HMEF 5143: SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT (60%)

OBJECTIVE:

The purpose of this assignment to equip learners with the knowledge and

understanding of diverse theoretical approaches in the field of education, and finally enable learners to apply the skills and knowledge in addressing education and schooling issues.

Knowledge in sociology of education is crucial for educators to understand the educational systems and schools. An in-depth knowledge of the diverse theoretical approaches in

education will enable educators to have greater insights in the study of educational organizations Task 1

You are required to identify a school and then interview a teacher on the roles of the school as an educational institution. Using either the functional or conflict theory,

discuss the roles of the school as an educational organization. Focus your discussion on the functions, professionals, bureaucratic aspects, growth and control of schools. (60 marks)

Task 2

Based on your interview, using either the functional or conflict theory, discuss the power dynamics in the classroom. Your essay should encompass teacherstudent relationships, classroom interactions, teachers coping strategies, teaching and learning processes and classroom climate. (40 marks)
