5th Century AD - Europe developed into small fiefdoms, each governed by a local lord. This division meant that knowledge spread slowly, as communication was difficult and dangerous. Academic knowledge was held by the monasteries. There were no universities, and very few common people could read or write. Most people were extremely superstitious. After 1066 - universities were established, and trade and communications developed especially by sea. However, knowledge about medicine had stagnated. Knowledge was lost when the Roman Empire collapsed. There was a lack of resources to build public health systems.
