In Dhaka city 50% of the waste are collected and disposed from the city and while the

rest are being dumped in the low lying areas, city drainage system and also in the rivers. The worst case scenario is there is no comprehensive system for the collection of the bio-medical waste and industrial waste. The waste is disposed in the watercourse and especially the industrial waste that is not also categorized as hazardous or non- hazardous are disposed in the same manner. The pollution of Dhaka is primarily caused by domestic sewage in absence of sufficient sewerage system and industrial water discharges from nine industrial clusters as information given by Industrial Waste Management (IWM) (2007). In the process the following river system including Turag, Buriganga etc are affected heavily and needs deliberate attention. The surface water quality of these rivers system contains very high BOD, COD and E-coli which indicate waste materials remains untreated from the industries and the domestic sewage. As a result of high pollution level many sections of the rivers in the city and the areas surrounding it are biologically dead mainly due to eutrophication especially during the dry season with most of the water is unhealthy for the human usage. This impacts the residents of the Dhaka city by higher healthcare costs relating to the water borne and water bred diseases according to the report of the World Bank. These water bodies instead of refreshing the city environment are acting as breeding ground for mosquitos and by to spreading diseases. The following policies will help in overriding the current scenario: 1. The government should urgently act to implement policy by rehabilitating and expanding the existing sewer system and have separate sewerage system. 2. More Water Treatment facilities should be set up in different parts of the water network in Dhaka city to expedite the cleanup of the wastewater. 3. Ensure that all factories have installed the waste treatment plant before dumping the waste directly into the river. A scrutinizing team should be allocated to check on the plant after certain intervening time SQUEEZE THESE ALL IN 300 WORDS!!!!!!
