Hormones and their functions

A hormone is a class of chemical that is produced in glands known as endocrine glands, in all
multicellular organisms, and transported by the blood circulation to a distant target organ to coordinate
it physiology and behavior.
Men Produce Hormones in their testes, and women in their ovaries.
Hormones regulate a variety of physiological and behavioral activities, including:
Digestion
Metabolism
Respiration
Tissue function
Sensory function
Sleep, excretion
Lactation
Stress
Growth and development
Movement
Reproduction
Mood
Hormones work in the long term, irreversibly and slowly. There are different hormones, some are water-
soluble and are transported through the circulatory system.
Enzymes
o Enzymes are hugely important in life. Any biological reaction in any organism requires a catalyst-
an enzyme.
o Enzymes are almost always proteins, though they may carry a non-protein component.
o The main properties of enzymes are:
o They are deactivated at high temperatures.
o They can work in either direction.
o The properties of enzymes are very similar to the properties of proteins.
