What are Hormones?

 Hormones are chemical substances that act like messenger molecules in the
body. After being made in one part of the body, they travel to other parts of the
body where they help control how cells and organs do their work.
 For example, insulin is a hormone that's made by the beta cells in the pancreas.
When it's released into the blood, insulin helps regulate how the cells of the body
use glucose (a type of sugar) for energy.
Hormones and Role In the Body

Thyroid simulating hormone(TSH) TSH simulates the growth and functions of the thyroid gland
Growth hormone(GH) GH simulates growth and development of the body.
Thyroxine It regulates body metabolism and plays an important role in
growth and development.
Adrenaline It helps in defense of the body in emergency situations.

Insulin It regulates the blood sugar level.

Estrogen It controls the development of secondary sexual Estrogen as


development of breasts, in females.
Testosterone It controls the development of secondary sexual breasts, in as
development such as facial hair, in males.

 Hormones are chemical messengers.
 They are chemical signal that circulate in the body fluids.
 The Hormones regulate the behavior of the target cells.
 Hormones, unlike enzymes do not catalyze any reaction.

 Hormones are very important to our Body.


 Without Hormones their will be no growth and
Development in our body.
 The hormones help us by travelling all over the body
performing different functions, such as helping bones to
grow and helping the body make more blood cells.
